earthquake
Location: China
Date: 2008
Magnitude: 7.9
People killed: 68,000
Time: 2:30
Although the ground we walk on seems solid, the earth is actually made up of huge pieces of flat rock called tectonic plates.
These move very slowly, and where they meet is called a fault. When the plates rub together, the movement forces waves of energy to come to the
earth's surface. This causes tremors and shakes - and this is what causes earthquakes.
On 6 November 2008, the central government announced that it will
spend 1 trillion yuan (about $146.5 billion) over the next three years
to rebuild areas ravaged by the earthquake.
It is the 21st deadliest earthquake of all time.Strong aftershocks, some exceeding
magnitude 6, continued to hit the area even months after the main quake, causing new
casualties and damage.
People was left homeless
70,000 people died
The effects on the landscape and buildings were divesting the whole of Sichuan was totally flattened leaving lots of people homeless.
Economic Effects
The overall cost of repair to the Chinease economy has been estimated at over
£6 billion pounds!
Human Responses
China sent the army to help victims but the army came upon the problem of mud slides on the roads leading to Sichuan had also cracked. Neighbours of victims helped to dig each other out from the rubble.
Other countries and charities from outside China started to help but the other countries would have helped sooner but China rejected the help because of their secretive nature.
Solutions to Earthquakes
You could strengthen the structure of the house.
Border the windows so they don’t smash.
Have a basement with supplies.
