• The way goods were made, from hand-made to machine made.

• Section of a canal that is closed off so water can be removed or added; allows boats to travel between waterways that are different levels.

Manufacture

• To make products by hand or by machine

Toll

• Fee paid to use a road

Turnpike

• Road that travelers pay a toll to use

DeWitt Clinton

• Governor of New York who urged the building of the Erie Canal in 1817

• Author who wrote books in the early 1800’s about life on the frontier such as The Last of the Mohicans.
