MassDOT’s Vision for Bicycling

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is committed to promoting bicycling as an important transportation mode that can reduce emissions and support healthy lifestyles. The Massachusetts Bicycle Transportation Plan (Bicycle Plan), envisions the Commonwealth as a leader in bicycle transportation with a system that balances transportation modes and provides extensive infrastructure for bicycling. MassDOT supports bicycle transportation through the following initiatives:

MassDOT’s Project Development and Design Guide requires a comprehensive Complete Streets, multi-modal design philosophy, providing accommodations for all roadway users.

The GreenDOT Policy - a comprehensive sustainability initiative that integrates environmental responsibility into all areas of MassDOT’s activities.

The Healthy Transportation Compact - an inter-agency collaboration that promotes positive health outcomes and active lifestyles.

Mode Shift Goal - a policy-setting initiative to increase the percentage of trips taken by bicycle, walking, and transit.

The Bicycle Facilities Inventory - a statewide database of on-street and off-street facilities for bicyclists, including existing, designed, and planning projects.

Bicycling in Massachusetts

To create a cohesive network of bicycle facilities, the Bicycle Plan proposed a Bay State Greenway (BSG) system of 788 miles of facilities in seven corridors, crossing the Commonwealth, in tandem with a secondary network of feeder routes. Utilizing both shared use paths and on-road facilities, the BSG provides transportation connections to population centers, recreational resources, and neighboring states along these seven corridors:

Connecticut River Valley (E & W) 122

Nashua River-Buzzards Bay 127

Merrimack River-Charles River 86

Total 788

The BSG currently includes more than 30 different shared use paths totaling 152 miles. More than 15 projects covering an additional 60 miles are in construction or final design, and MassDOT has launched an effort to build another 100 miles: the BSG Priority 100.

The BSG Priority 100The BSG Priority 100 (BSG 100) comprises key shared use path projects that will increase the existing BSG by approximately 100 miles. The focus of the BSG 100 is on making additional connections to urban centers, extending existing paths, and maximizing the transportation utility of the network. The map and table below summarize the projects in the BSG 100.

BSG Customer InformationCollaboration between MassDOT, regional and local officials is allowing placement of route identification signs and pavement markings along the entire BSG network at intervals frequent enough to assist with route-finding. MassDOT is also developing BSG maps and a website with information on the BSG network, including the vision, current routes, and implementation progress.
