A Sundial for Berea College
New Deep Green Residence Hall
The New Deep Green Residence Hall at Berea College (now under construction) will feature a special ceramic sundial over its front entrance. Design & production of these ceramic tiles will be part of a new academic course at Berea – to be taught by Sarah Gross, Ceramic Artist-in-Residence, and Philip Wiggs, Resident Potter and Ceramic Technician – beginning in Spring Term, 2013.
A Welcome Addition
The new ceramic sundial will be featured prominently over the entrance to Berea’s new Deep Green Residence Hall – designed by Hastings+Chivetta & Hellmuth+Bicknese (project and sustainability architects)
Sundial Mockup
Four students will be enrolled in the new course – looking at different methodologies to obtain the desired specs for the final glazed product as well as different ways to break up the pattern for production purposes.

Sundial Construction
H+B will provide all necessary templates to facilitate production & work with the design team on recommendations for the overall approach to mounting the sundial.
The Berea Quilt Sundial
Berea College is also interested in designing a new product line for sale as a miniature version of the sundial due to the iconic nature of the quilt-pattern design.
