Each century the artists creations began to differ from one another lighting the way out of darkness.

14th Century

• Period of infancy• Adopting the styles of the ancient Romans.

Giotto di Bondone• July 1266-January 1337•Italian painter from Florence.• His paintings were traditional religious subjects but he made them very life like.•His style would be classified as Italian Gothic and proto-Renaissance. • He commissioned works of art for churches; believing that it would earn his way into heaven.

• Painted in 1305• Introduced the idea of

painting in 3-D• Represented divinity

and sacredness. • Human beings are the

subject matter; acting with dedication and passion of sacrifice and redemption.

15th Century

• Period of adolescence• Intensive study of Greek and Latin classics. • Boom in the decorative arts.

Masaccio • Born December 21, 1401-1408.• Birth name Tommaso di Ser Giovanni di Mone Cassai.• He was first to use Linear perspective and vanishing point.• His style employed perspective and realism.

• Earliest works created by Masaccio.• Collaboration with Masolino da Panicale

Jan Van Eyck •1395-July 1441• Was a Flemish painter in the Netherlands.• “ Father of oil painting”• Master of Biblical symbolism• Completed 15 paintings in 61 years• He helped complete the Ghent Altarpiece that his brother had started first.

Leonardo Da Vinci• Born April 15,1452-May 2,1519•Wasn’t just educated in the field of arts but also in science.• His knowledge of the human anatomy aided him in mastering the realist art form. • Humanistic Values • He sketched the first parachute, helicopter, aero plane etc. •The ideal Renaissance Man full of curiosity and inventive imagination

Michelangelo• Born March 6, 1475-February 18, 1564 in Caprese, Italy• Art inspired by the human body.• Painter, sculptor, and architect• Was know as Divino that means, ‘The Divine One’. • He was involved in a fraud when he buried his statue The Cupid to make it look ancient. Then tried to sell it off as an antique to get a higher profit.• At the end of his life, Michelangelo destroyed many of his sketches ; so people couldn’t find out how hard he had worked.

• As humanism began to open up; individual opportunities for women began to flourish.

Judith Leyster•July 28 1609-Feburary 10, 1660• Dutch Golden Age painter • Painted lively scenes with people enjoying themselves.• Her art work began to decrease after her marriage. • Although her paintings were well known during her lifetime; her art was largely forgotten after her death.

Giovanna Garzoni• 1600-1670• Themes were decorative and still life paintings• Took a vow of chastity which enabled her to focus more on her paintings • Official court painter for Grand Duke Ferdinando II• She gave away her property so her monument could be placed in the Accademia’s church.
