FROM THE HEADTEACHER
The academic year 2013/14 has been one of significant change for the school. A new National Curriculum at Key Stage 3, new examination requirements and performance measures announced mid-year and mid-course at Key Stage 4, new syllabuses at GCSE and A Level to prepare, and even a new Secretary of State: all have brought their own particular challenges. In addition 11 members of staff made the simultaneous decision to move on to pastures new. The retirements of Mrs Hauff, Mrs Millers, Mr and Mrs McGivern with a combined service to the school of 117 years has left a significant absence in our midst! We wish them every happiness as they reflect on many successful years at Chew Valley. Whilst change can be disruptive, it can also inspire. Change can provide opportunities to do things differently and promote improvement. A positive effect of this change can be seen in our new signage at the entrance and around the site. We have adopted a school motto of Learn, Grow, Achieve to reflect our major emphasis for this year and the future to inculcate a Growth Mind-set. The inspiring refreshment of change is also seen in the energetic contribution being made by all the new staff who have been recruited to help the school move forward to embrace these new challenges. Amidst all the change, however, one thing remains constant: Chew Valley’s determination to provide the very best educational and extra-curricular opportunities for all its pupils remains at the heart of our mission. Our commitment to excellent relationships between pupils, parents, teachers and governors remains the bed-rock on which this great school is built. GOVERNORS’ ACTIVITIES 2013-2014
The Governing Body meets as a full board six times a year. They receive termly reports from the Headteacher and Chairs of the sub-committees as well as keeping the work of the school under review. Its role is to work with school leadership to develop the strategy of the school through the School Development Plan and keeps a watchful eye over school performance through scrutiny of examination results and the School Evaluation Report. It is responsive to parental concerns and holds its annual meeting with parents to ensure channels of communication are maintained. The Curriculum and Pupils committee met regularly throughout the year. The Assessment and Marketing, Behaviour, Child Protection, and Social Media policies were reviewed. Presentations to the Committee were made by the Head of Careers and the Head of Music. The School Development Plan and Self Evaluation Plan were put under scrutiny. The Committee also considered: the performance and monitoring of vulnerable groups, curriculum changes, new accountability measures, the Assessment Review, and Pupil Premium and Intervention.
The Finance and Property Committee has continued to closely monitor the school’s budget, and the extensive programme of repair and maintenance. Two of the most noticeable improvements have been the resurfacing of the entrance drive, and replacement of windows to the Lower School. The contract for cleaning the school was retendered, resulting in an annual saving of about £9,000. A Business Continuity Management Plan was created, and our Risk Register has been updated. Governors were pleased to note that our energy consumption has been reduced, despite the increase in technology around the school. The solar panels have proved to be a great investment. Careful financial planning has enabled the school to carry forward a healthy balance to support the coming year.
The Personnel Committee has continued to ensure that the school’s pay and performance management policies have been followed in line with the legal framework. The Pay Policy was revised following new guidelines from the Government. A number of staff left the school during the year, including some with a significant number of years’ experience. However, the new appointments are of a very high calibre and the excellent quality of teaching is expected to be maintained. Five Teaching and Learning Leaders have been appointed for the current academic year covering different areas of teaching practise to which all teaching staff must opt to be in one. Meetings are held weekly and the year will end with the sharing of practise.
The Health and Safety Committee reviewed the school’s Health and Safety Policy and the Education Visits Policy for approval by the full Board of Governors. It received an audit by the Local Authority which was overwhelmingly complimentary about arrangements at the school and a few minor issues raised by auditors have now been addressed. The Fire Risk Assessment has been reviewed and all appropriate property and equipment tests are up to date and complete.

Policy Chew Valley School is a fully comprehensive school with a non-selective admissions policy. We enter pupils of all abilities for examinations; our philosophy is that we are here to provide opportunities for students, not to massage examination results.
