hallslife.arts.ac.ukBefore you apply
GuarantorsFor some of our halls, and for most private accommodation, you’ll need a guarantor (someone based in the UK who agrees to pay your rent if you can’t). Please make sure that you have agreed this with someone before applying.
UAL Disability ServiceWe have a range of accessible accommodation on offer for disabled and impaired students. Contact our Disability Liaison Officer at accommodation@arts.ac.uk
If you have specific needs or requests, or would like to find out more about the University Disability Service, you can phone 0207 514 6156 or email disability@arts.ac.uk
Allocations We work on a first come, first served basis when allocating places in halls, prioritising students who have a disability, international students and students who are under the age of 18. Please make sure you include this information in your application if it applies to you.
Deposit and rentIf you receive an offer of accommodation, you will need to make an initial payment of £510 to accept. This is made up of £250 advanced rent, £200 damage deposit and a £60 non refundable admin fee.
When accepting your offer, you have the option to pay your annual rent in full or choose a termly payment plan. If you choose to pay your annual rent in one go, this can be done via bank transfer, Flywire, a credit or debit card.
If you choose the termly payment plan, the rent will be deducted from the same card you paid the initial £510 with.
If you wish to change the card details at any point during the year, call the Accommodation Finance team on 0207 514 6240.

How to apply to live in halls
Secure your placeYou will have 7 days to accept your offer and make an initial payment to secure your place in halls. This will change to 48 hours in August. If you receive an offer with one of our partner halls, they will contact you directly for this.
Offers sent via emailWe will start sending offers via email on Thursday 23 May, so please check your account and monitor your junk folder to stay updated. We will try our best to offer you one of your five choices, however it might not always be possible. In this instance, we will offer you a place in one of the halls that is still available.
PaymentWe usually take payment on the day you move in, using the card you made your initial payment with. If you are receiving a UK or US loan after this date, contact our team with proof of the loan schedule and we can adjust this.
Choose your top fiveApplications must be made online at arts.ac.uk/accommodation You will be asked to choose your top five halls. We strongly advise that you choose five different halls to avoid disappointment.

TV Licence You’ll need to buy a TV Licence to watch live broadcasts on any device, including a computer or tablet.
Find out more at: tvlicensing.co.uk/students
LaundryOn-site laundry facilities cost about £5 per week.
InventoriesAn inventory is a document listing every item in your room. You should complete this as soon as you arrive to make sure you get your deposit back at the end of the year, and avoid charges for missing items or previous tenant damage. Some of our halls have online inventories, whereas some have physical documents.
Tenancy agreementWhether you’re living in halls or a private property, you’ll need to sign a tenancy contract. It’s a legally binding document so it’s important to read it.
Look out for details like the rent you’ll be paying when it starts and ends, any deposit and admin fees, and what to do to start or end your agreement early.
Duty of Care AgreementIf you’re under 18 at the start of your contract, you’ll need your parent or guardian to sign a Duty of Care Agreement.
Find out more at: arts.ac.uk/accommodation
CitymapperLondon’s an amazing city, but it’s also large. A commute to your College usually will take 45-60 minutes so it’s worth downloading the Citymapper app to plan your journeys around town.
Check out tfl.gov.uk for other useful travel information.
What to packAfter you have accepted your offer, we will send you a full list of what is provided in halls and what you will need to bring on arrival.
You will definitely need to bring your own bedding, crockery and cutlery, however we do recommend that you can buy the majority of these items when you move in, as there are lots of big outlets near our halls.
Contents insuranceAll our hall rental prices include electricity, water, gas and high speed Wi-Fi. Contents insurance is also included, but check the terms in case you have items of high value that need extra cover.

Here’s some useful information before you make the big move...
Sorting out visasWhen completing your visa application, you may need your new UK address including the postcode. If you will stay in our halls, you can include our contact details and say that your Tier 4 sponsor is arranging your accommodation.
Please note: Many of our tenancy contracts last for 41, 42 or 50 weeks and your visa may not cover this whole period. We cannot release you from your tenancy early if your visa is for a shorter period than your tenancy contract. If your arrival to your accommodation is delayed due to visa problems, get in touch with us so that we can offer advice.
Getting support If you’re worried about money, immigration, your physical or mental health, working while studying or anything else, our teams are on hand throughout the year. Search for ‘student help and support’ at arts.ac.uk. You can also book an appointment or drop in to see us at 272 High Holborn.
Staying safeIt’s important to take care of your personal possessions and be sensible when walking around London. Search for ‘international’ on our website for useful safety advice from the British Council.
Airport pick-up We offer an airport collection service if you’re a student coming to UAL for the first time from a non-EU country. Search ‘airport collection’ at arts.ac.uk for more details. Please make sure you book at least three days in advance of your arrival date.
UK-based guarantorFor some of our halls, and for most private accommodation, you’ll either need a guarantor (someone based in the UK who agrees to pay your rent if you can’t) or you’ll need to pay a large proportion of your rent in advance.
Electrical items You’ll need adaptors for your electrical items as UK plug sockets aren’t compatible with non-UK plugs. You can buy them from airports or shops across London. Remember to check your items are compatible with the UK’s 220–240V / 50 Hz power supply. Please leave any ‘cube’ style adaptors at home as they aren’t allowed in the UK for safety reasons.
International Student House International Student House arranges social and cultural events throughout the year, including discount tourist trips around Europe and sports events. You’ll automatically become a member when you join UAL so you can get involved for free. Find out more at ish.org.uk
Talk to usOur International Accommodation Advisor who is based in UAL’s Asia Branch Office in Hong Kong can speak to you in Mandarin, Cantonese or English. If you’d like to know more please contact on +852 2155 4207 or contact us on accommodation@arts.ac.uk
Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity. It’s your chance to discover different cultures, ideas — even different sides of yourself.

Halls TeamsLife in halls can be an incredible experience. We have a team of dedicated staff committed to helping you get settled in and keeping you safe throughout the year.
Residence ManagersAll our halls are staffed 24/7 and have a Residence Manager and/or an Accommodation Manager who run the team. This can comprise security, cleaning and maintenance staff to make sure the building is in excellent condition and to keep you safe.
Your Residence Manager or Accommodation Manager is responsible for the day to day management of the building and ensuring tenancy agreements are managed correctly. You will usually find them in the main office of your hall or in and around communal areas carrying out their duties.
They also deal with any welfare issues or queries that you may have, no issue is too big or too small. You can always contact your Manager (or any member of the onsite team) for help about anything to do with living in halls, advice on the local area or if you just need someone to chat to.
24-hour teamThere is also a dedicated 24-hour team who oversee all the sites and look after students in the evenings, overnight and on weekends.

E-induction Once you have accepted your offer of accommodation, you will need to sign in to the student portal and complete a short series of training modules before moving in. These include getting to know your new neighbourhood and fire safety training.
Safety in hallsAccommodation Services run regular campaigns throughout the year, to ensure students are kept up to date on all safety and security procedures.
Our Residence Managers and Accommodation Managers have strong working relationships with the local authorities in the areas surrounding our halls.
All halls have a special 24-hour number that you can call if you need to report anything.
Safety and securityThe safety and security of residents are top priorities for Accommodation Services staff.
We have a lot of measures in place to ensure that you feel safe and secure in your own home.
24-hour teamYou’ll get a key, an electronic card or fob when you first arrive at the hall, so you can get in and out of the building.
24-hour CCTV covers the inside and outside of every hall. We also have 24-hour staff, guards or wardens who work out of hours in all of our halls.
Fire safetyAll of our halls meet the relevant fire safety standards. We have multiple escape routes, smoke detectors and fire alarms, which are tested weekly.

Social ProgrammeThe Social Programme is a halls events programme run by students for students.
Student repsThere are more than 30 Social and Wellbeing Representatives who are current students and live in halls. They provide peer-to-peer support throughout the year and run our events programme. Your reps also run weekly events to ensure that you have a great time.
EventsYour reps will run free weekly events in halls including afternoon tea, film nights, yoga and fitness classes. You can also take part in a number of low cost day trips in the UK, theatre visits, art gallery exhibitions and other events across London.
Drop in sessionsYour reps also host weekly drop-in sessions, so if you want advice on how to look after your health, would like some help with managing deadlines or just fancy a chat, they are there to listen.

Letting agents A lot of properties are marketed by letting agents. Legally, letting agents need to be members of a redress scheme, such tpos.co.uk or theprs.co.uk. Lettings agents must also advertise their fees and charges in advance and are not allowed to ask you for money until after you have viewed a property and want to accept it.
Cost Rent can vary a lot. Anything from £120 per week for a room in a shared house to £350+ per week for a studio flat is possible. Utility bills like electricity, gas and water will add between £10 and £20 per week. Telephone and internet is around £5 extra a week and a TV licence is £150.50 a year.
Contracts As a tenant, you should always have a written contract outlining your rights and responsibilities. This may be a printed document or e-document. Read this thoroughly before you sign and keep a copy in case you need to refer to it again. Contact us if you have any questions or need help with your contract.
We can check it for you and explain how contracts work. Remember that contracts are legally binding, so you do not want to accept a contract that is not good for you!
Make sure you understand your contract and keep a copy of it. You can always contact us if you have any questions.
Finding a place Managed by our colleagues at University of London Housing Services, housing.london.ac.uk is UAL’s list of approved landlords and agents. Remember that you must be in London to view accommodation offered by private landlords and agents in person before you pay any money.
Independent halls of residence There are many independent halls available in London. Independent halls are similar to UAL halls, but you will be living with students from other colleges and universities. Check housing.london.ac.uk or nationalcode.org.

Go to lots of viewings in London. Only pay once you have viewed
the place in person and you’re sure you want to live there.
Be on top of your paperwork. Have your documents ready
for reference checks, and keep all documents you are given, including texts and emails.
Always have a record of your payment. Avoid paying cash,
and always get a receipt for your payment.
Make sure you pay rent to a real landlord and not other tenants,
or even a fraudster. Do not pay rent to another student. If you’re unsure of who you’re dealing with, you can ask us for advice.
Make sure you read the contract carefully. Check it contains
everything you have discussed and agreed with the agent or landlord. Make sure you understand what the contract says.
