The rich mix of cultures creates a vibrant and energetic atmosphere and is one of the many reasons why students choose to study here. With London being one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world and an international cultural capital, the University and its Colleges are well placed to help students find their way in the global and local creative community.

New developmentsThe University’s student support services are in the heart of London, located in a new building at 272 High Holborn. London is a world-class city that is made up of boroughs and neighbourhoods, many with a village-like feel. Internationally-renowned museums and galleries sit comfortably next to small artist-run exhibition spaces that feature experimental work. Well-trodden paths with international landmarks, major department stores and high street shops are often only round the corner from hidden gems, including markets, small boutiques and designer-makers’ studios.

If you are new to London, the best way to get your bearings is to get out and walk around. There is a tremendous amount to see and do and each area is diverse and surprisingly different to the next, with its own character and culture.

The best way to get to know this great city is to experience it. London is for discovering.

The next few pages will help you prepare for your studies. Here you will find information about fees and funding, housing, health and the resources available to you once you arrive at the University.

There are a number of general resources you can access to support your studies before you arrive. Visual Directions is a resource for developing sketchbooks and reflective writing practices. Creative Living, a website by Creative Careers, can help you think about what to do after your studies. There is also information on marking criteria and how your work will be assessed.

For details about your course, including content and schedules, required preparatory work or other academic matters, contact the School or course department at your College (see contact details starting page 26).

Preparing to study

University of the Arts London offers distinctive education in art, design, fashion, communication and the performing arts in six distinguished Colleges across London. The passion and commitment of the staff and students to their subjects are among the University’s significant strengths, as are the diverse student group and the high number of qualified teachers among the technical and academic staff.

Learning at the University is practice-based, creative and strongly linked with industry and the arts through live briefs, placements, exhibitions and performances. Discussion with your peers and tutors of your studio-based project work is how much of the teaching and feedback takes place. The University uses Blackboard, an online learning environment, as well as other technologies, to provide resources, information and communication tools.

There are a lot of things you need to think about before you start your course, and fees and money issues are some of the most important. Making arrangements for the payment of your course tuition fees is a significant and essential step towards becoming a student at the University.

But you will need to think about more than just tuition fees – there is also the cost of accommodation, living and travel as well as fees for equipment and materials (detailed in your course administration documents). Further information can be found at www.arts.ac.uk/money-matters.htm

Home and European Union studentsThe information in this section sets out course fees and available funding for students who are classified as Home (based on residence in the UK) or as European Union (EU). It is set out according to the type and level of course that you are doing – whether Further Education, Undergraduate or Postgraduate – with general information for all students starting on page 15.

International studentsThe Fees and Money information for students from outside the European Union is different from what appears here. If you are an international student, the overseas fee rates will apply. Please visit www.arts.ac.uk/int-fees.htm for further details.

Money for Undergraduate students

BA, BSc and Foundation DegreeThe information here is for Home and EU students.

FeesIn Autumn 2010, the University will charge new Home/EU students (who meet the residency requirements) £3,290 per year for a full-time undergraduate course (BA, BSc or Foundation Degree). Home/EU students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to meet all or part of the fees for that course. The Student Loans Company pays the fees directly to the University. If you do not take out the loan, you will be asked to pay the fees yourself, direct to the University at the start of the course. You repay the loan after graduation once you have started work earning more than £15,000 a year. For more information and to apply, visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

If you are in any doubt about your fee status, or you need information about your fees, contact your School or College Office. Contact details are on the letter offering you a place on your course and on page 26.

Applying for student fundingIf you meet the UK residency requirements as a Home student, you can apply to Student Finance England for your student support. You should apply as early as possible to avoid delays to your enrolment. Information and all applications for funding are detailed on www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

If you are a continuing or transferring student who has applied to your Local Authority for your current student support, you should still apply to the same Local Authority.

European UnionEuropean Union nationals who do not meet the UK residency requirements but who are normally resident in the European Economic Area can apply as an EU student for a loan to pay the tuition fees only. You cannot apply for a loan or grants to help with living expenses. Contact the Student Finance Services European Team on +44 (0)141 243 3570

EU/EEA Migrant workers in the UKIf you are an EU or EEA national and are living and working in the UK prior to the start of your course then you may qualify to be treated as a Home student and be eligible for the full package of student funding described below. Please contact Student Services for more information. Contact details are at the back of the booklet.

General money information for all students

Scholarships and bursariesThe University offers a wide range of financial assistance to its students. Scholarships and bursaries are often dependent on the level or type of course and family income.www.arts.ac.uk/scholarships-bursaries.htm

Access to Learning Fund (ALF) / Learner Support Funds (LSF)These are government funds to provide small grants to help with study costs if you find yourself in financial difficulty once you have enrolled. To apply, you must fulfill requirements relating to your residence in the UK. Part-time students may also apply, but must normally be undertaking studies equivalent to at least 50 per cent of a full-time course.

External charities and trustsSome students can receive limited help from independent organisations like charities, trusts and foundations. To apply, you must match the requirements of the organisation. Only apply if you meet their criteria. Two ways of researching are recommended:• Funderfinder is the University’s charities database. Contact Student Services on +44 (0)20 7514 6230• The Educational Grants Advisory Service (EGAS) specialises in assisting students to find appropriate charities. For an application form, send a stamped self-addressed envelope to: EGAS Family Action 501–505 Kingsland Road London E8 4AU www.family-action.org.uk

Council TaxAll students under age 18 do not pay Council Tax and are not included in any calculations for the bill. Certain other students are exempt from paying Council Tax. If you are studying on a qualifying full-time course, you can get a Council Tax Exemption Certificate from your School or College Office to send to your local council. The property is then exempt if you live alone or with other full-time students. No one in the property should receive a bill for Council Tax.

If you live with other people who are not full-time students and who have to pay Council Tax, then the flat/house will receive a bill. Your name should not be included on it and you will not be legally expected to pay. However, you may need to negotiate this with your flatmates.

If you are not entitled to a Council Tax Exemption Certificate, and you can meet the benefits rules, you should apply to your local council for Council Tax Benefit. If you are sent a Council Tax bill do not ignore it. You can be taken to court if you do not pay and can be charged extra costs. Contact the Council if you think your bill is wrong or contact Student Services for advice.www.arts.ac.uk/student/money/he-council-tax.htm

Money for Postgraduate students

FeesMost students have to pay their own fees for postgraduate courses. www.arts.ac.uk/pg-fees.htm

If you are in any doubt about your fee status, or you need information about your fees, please contact your School or College Office. Contact details are at the back of this booklet.

Concessionary feesThe University has a concessionary fee policy for some Home and EU students on part-time taught (not research) postgraduate courses. If you pay your own fees at the Home/EU rate and you or your partner receive a means-tested social security benefit (or a specified level of working tax credit) at the time of enrolment, you may qualify to pay a reduced fee of £20.www.arts.ac.uk/student/money/pg-concessions.htm

Postgraduate AwardsContact your School or College Office to discuss whether funding is available. The main body that provides postgraduate funding for UK-based students in the University’s core subject areas is the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
