Economic recovery can only occurone transaction, one new job, onenew business at a time.

For Washington Parish residentsthat may require a dramatic shift intheir shopping paradigms.

If the parish is to be eventuallydelivered from the financial abyss ofthe past several years, residents willhave to be committed to shoppinglocally whenever possible. Too often,a steady stream of vehicles carryingpotential sales dollars and ultimate-ly sales tax revenue that would helpreplenish government coffers areseen leaving the parish daily. Emptyon departure, loaded down withgoods on return.

Each sale out of the parish trans-lates into a potential lost job, pavedstreet, or a new computer lab at alocal school.

Granted, Washington Parish doesnot afford some of the shoppingamenities of competing locales.Unfortunately, occasions do arisewhen shopping out of the area is

necessary.Perhaps hope is on the retail hori-

zon, beginning with the recent open-ing Tractor Supply Co. in Bogalusa.

Additionally, the opening of theBogue Chitto State Park and the con-tinued infringement of northern St.Tammany Parish into southernWashington Parish should meanthat the Franklinton area is on theprecipice of a growth cycle. If indoubt, drive through Franklinton ona Saturday afternoon and don’t besurprised by the traffic congestion.

With growth comes increaseddemand for services, which is theincubator for economic expansion.

Shopping habits are difficult toalter, and opulence is never easy tobypass, but for this region to flour-ish economically dollars have to bespent locally.

Every dollar spent locally maytranslate into your neighbor, or evenfamily member, securing employ-ment. And a step on the path to eco-nomic stability.

Keep your shopping dollars local
