Health Screening – a search or check for diseases or disorders that an individual would otherwise not have knowledge of or seek treatment for.
Safety should be a major concern when you participate in sports & other physical activities. You can reduce your risk of injury by…
Safety First Use the proper safety
equipment for your chosen activity.
Being alert of your surrounding environment.
Playing at your skill level and knowing your physical limits.
Warming up and cooling down before and after activity.
Staying within areas that have been designated for physical activities.
Obey all rules and restrictions.
Practicing good sportsmanship.
Personal Safety
Wear a helmet when bicycling, skateboarding, or skating.
Avoid doing activities at night. If you do wear reflective tape.
Proper footwear and clothing is also important.
Review Questions: Define the term hydration. What are anabolic steroids? Name
three ways they can harm health. Why is important to get a preventive
health screening before beginning a physical activity?
How can practicing good sportsmanship help you stay safe when participating in a sport?

Being Safe While Physically Active Examine the graph, & choose a sport or activity
in which you or your friends participate. Using reliable online resources, research your sport to find injury statistics. For example:• What injuries are most common for this sport? • How many teens are injured each year in this sport?• How many of these injuries are treated in the emergency
room?• What protective equipment & precautions can reduce
injury in this sport? Create a poster listing this information. Make your poster
colorful & attention-getting to appeal to a teen audience. Be sure to give a catchy title.
