Rare baseball cards from Ohio sellwell at auctionTOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Century-oldbaseball cards discovered in an Ohioattic sold big at an auction but they aren'tgoing to make anyone super-rich. That'sbecause the cards and the money arebeing evenly divided among 20 cousins.
A sampling of the treasure trove that hadbeen untouched for 100 years was soldThursday night during the NationalSports Collectors Convention in Balti-more, Md. The 37 baseball cards featur-ing the likes of Hall of Famers Ty Cobb,Cy Young and Honus Wagner fetched acombined $566,132 in brisk online andlive bidding. They were expected tobring about $500,000.
Family member Karla Hench, whohelped uncover the cards, said theybrought "fantastic prices." She said fam-ily members were thrilled by the results."We're very excited that we can allshare in this find," she said.
Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions atHeritage Auctions, which conducted thesale, said two lots were sold to Internetbidders and the third went to a bidderpresent at the auction. The auctionhouse declined to identify the winningbidders.
"It was a lot of fun," he said. "The roomwas packed."

. . . “Rare”What made this find so special was thatthe 700 cards were nearly pristine, thefinest examples anyone had ever seenfrom an extremely rareseries given out withcandy around 1910.
The best of the bunchwas sold in three lots— one, which sold for$286,800, was anearly complete E98set, the name of thethe series the cardswere issued under, and another was aHonus Wagner cardthat was judged to bein perfect condition byProfessional SportsAuthenticator, a com-pany that grades cardson a 1-to-10 scalebased of their condi-tion. It brought $239,000. A third groupof baseball cards fetched $40,332.
Prices included buyers' premiums. The highest price ever paid for a base-ball card is $2.8 million for a different
Wagner card — a 1909 version pro-duced by the American Tobacco Co.and included in packs of cigarettes.Only about 60 of Wagner's tobaccocards are known to exist after beingpulled from circulation, either because
the ballplayer didn'twant to encouragesmoking among childrenor because he wantedmore money. Sportscard experts who au-thenticated the find inOhio say they cameacross dozens of cardsthat were just about per-fect.
Karl Kissner, who dis-covered the cards inFebruary in the town ofDefiance with Hench, his cousin, said they be-longed to their grandfa-ther, Carl Hench, whodied in the 1940s. Theythink he gave away the
cards at his meat market and stashedthe extras in his attic and forgot aboutthem. The Hench familydecided toevenly split and sell the cards withsome of the proceeds going to charity.
