History of Immigration

• 1st people came from Asia 20,000 years ago– Native Americans

• 1500s- Spanish arrived and lived in present day Florida (later settled in the S.W.)

• 1600s- France, the Netherlands, and England– France- Canada– Dutch- New Amsterdam (NYC)– English- Coast line

• Late 1600s and Early 1700s- Germany, Sweden, Ireland, and Scotland

History of Immigration• Most Immigrants came willing• Western and Central Africans were taken from their homes and sold into

slavery• By 1807 when Congress passed a law stopping new slaves being brought to

America– 500,000

• 1830s-1860s-5 million new people – Ireland and Germany – Cali ‘48

• 1860-1890 – 10 million new people– Denmark, Norway, and Sweden

• 1890-1924– S. and E. Europe– (Italy, Greece, Poland, and Russia)

• Later 1900s– Latin America
