The American International School of Mozambique is a partnership of
engaged students, dedicated parents, and a highly qualified staff. Together
we create a learning environment that inspires students to cultivate their
unique talents and perspectives, and that prepares them to contribute in
purposeful ways to the world that they will inherit and shape. Our students
enjoy a stimulating and balanced educational program that is rooted in the
principles of excellence, ethics and engagement.
An IB World School, AISM offers the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) in the
Early Learning Centre through Grade 5, the Middle Years Program (MYP) in
Grades 6-10 and the Diploma Program (DP) in Grades 11 and 12. The IB
curriculum encourages young people to go beyond rote learning for
examinations, and to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers.
AISM has proudly served both the international and national
communities in Maputo since 1990. We continue to meet the needs
of families that seek a dynamic and rigorous learning environment
and a socially cohesive school culture that provides children an
immediate sense of acceptance and attachment to school life.

EXCELLENCE
Values define who we are as individuals and as communities.
At AISM three core values are woven into the fabric of our
school’s way of life and serve as touchstones for our mission to
deliver an outstanding educational program:
Excellence
Ethical Living
Engaged Learning
These values guide our efforts to inspire, educate and prepare
students for the important role they will each play as citizens of
an ever-changing world.
Striving for excellence means:
Taking personal initiative to learn, to be informed and to
gain knowledge, skills and understanding;
Envisioning the future with confidence, enthusiasm and
perseverance, and committing to shaping the future as an
agent of change;
Preparing to be culturally literate citizens of the world;
Achieving a balance in physical, emotional and
social development;
Setting and achieving ambitious goals.
Ethical living is:
Embracing the values of respect, honesty and integrity in
our interactions with others and the world around us;
Respecting the uniqueness of individuals and their varied
backgrounds, perspectives and abilities;
Acting with sensitivity and fairness;
Taking responsibility for our actions, accepting the
consequences of our decisions and learning from
experience;
Setting a good example and inspiring others.
ETHICAL LIVING

Engaged learning is:
Thinking critically and making
connections among information
and ideas;
Asking valuable questions, using a
variety of techniques to find answers
and probing for clarification;
Collaborating and sharing in an
environment that supports and
encourages risk-taking;
Developing divergent thinking
through understanding diverse
perspectives;
Demonstrating passion and
enthusiasm for lifelong learning.
ENGAGED LEARNING
“UBUNTU” is a philosophy deeply rooted in many cultures throughout
southern Africa. It’s an ethos we create when we understand the
importance of our interconnectedness to one another and to our
communities. Ubuntu manifests itself through the spirit of willing
participation, generosity, collaboration, genuine warmth, openness,
and personal dignity.
AISM’s Service Learning Program is built upon this concept of Ubuntu.
Through sustainable partnerships and meaningful projects both locally
and globally, our students learn to develop a sense of being connected
to others through our common humanity.
Service Learning takes place at every grade level. In the primary
school, students learn basic concepts of service through structured
activities on campus. Secondary school students are exposed to
diverse projects within the local community. Our goal is to enable our
students to be active, contributing citizens here in Mozambique and
wherever they may live in the future.

At the heart of our Creative Arts program lies the premise that the discipline,
cooperation, creativity and self-esteem developed through visual and performing
arts are essential life skills. From ELC right through Grade 12, students have the
opportunity to develop their talents in art, music, dance and drama.

Our Physical Education program not only develops physical
competence in a variety of sports but also guides students to
make informed decisions about healthy and active lifestyles.
AISM offers a wide range of recreational sports as well as
after-school clubs and activities for both primary and
secondary school students.
All AISM secondary students are encouraged to participate in
our competitive junior varsity and varsity sports program.
We offer soccer, basketball, swimming and volleyball for
both girls and boys. Students selected for the teams must be
willing to demonstrate appropriate sporting behavior, good
academic standing, trust, respect, leadership and team spirit.
Both primary and secondary students experience a wide range of
opportunities to take learning out of the classroom and into the
real world. Students investigate challenging topics and develop
a greater understanding of Mozambican culture and the rich
diversity of Africa.
Week Without Walls
At the beginning of every school year, middle and high school
students are exposed to a week-long program of creative and
experiential learning in Mozambique, Swaziland or South Africa.
Students learn about the area they are visiting, acquire new skills,
participate in leadership and cooperation exercises, make new
friends, and test their limits physically and mentally - all while
having the time of their lives! Where else can students view
Africa’s “Big Five”, run white-water rapids, dive among famous
coral reefs, ride elephants, trek mountains, explore ancient caves
and so much more?
