Attendance guaranteed!

Robin BradleyCo-owner/[email protected]

T HERE’S always a back story! In the case of our decision to refineour BIKE BIG EUROPE expo thinking it is a simple one.Attendance numbers.

Having proven the BBE concept, all that remained was to build the attendance. In truth, having successfully demonstrated what a custom market tech, engineering, parts, performance and accessory expo formula could and shouldlook like, in a post-recession 21st century, that was always destined to be by farthe easiest of the project’s long-term requirements - after all people will line upto see something good, but first it has to be good!

There are no end to the varied buttons that could be pushed to get the rightnumber and right profile of visitors through the door of a show such as BBE ifand when the relevance and quality message had been established.

In that regard we probably over-achieved in 2013, so much so that when Isubsequently started to eye a selection of strategiesfor 2014, I very quickly came to the conclusion thatsince the attendance already exists at INTERMOT,since the people are already in a visitor habit atINTERMOT, lets take the formula to them, lets go findthem rather than wait for them to find us.

There are all sorts of permutations of marketingavailable to BIG BIKE EUROPE. Many of themobvious, and many of them universal. But many arealso idiosyncratically European, arising from theunique structure of the market in Europe - one inwhich (unlike the United States) the ‘custom habit’ is actually a distinctly minorityoriented taste in motorcycle terms.

Don’t get me wrong, the custom market in Europe is large, and is growinglarger in share terms all the time, but in a continent where total motorcycle/PTWsales topped out at nearly 3m annually as recently as 2007/8 (with minimalnumbers of those units being ATV/Quad or SxS units) that share is never goingto come close to the 50 percent or so that Harley has hovered around in Americafor the past couple of decades.

One of the (many) stated ambitions with BIG BIKE EUROPE was always tobuild it out from a custom v-twin core to be inclusive of liquid-cooled customizing- a formula that better represents the greater degree of platform cross-over seenin custom shops in Europe, and one that goes to the performance orientedcharacter of the market in Europe (indeed, increasingly, in North America too) aswell as speaking to the broader palette of custom design and engineering seenin Europe - some would say the more radical, esoteric and plain ‘wackier’ customdesign and engineering oeuvre seen in Europe.

The concept of upgrading the custom show at INTERMOT that has alreadybeen a World Championship affiliate event for the past several years (The CologneCustom Cup) had already been explored, somewhat, before the decision wastaken to create BBE as a stand-alone event to host the AMD World Championship.

Because of the very specific expo environment that we want to champion, andthe frequency issue (INTERMOT is held every-other-year), and the timing issue

(spring and autumn/fall timings both have merit) we decided to set about aninitial ‘proof-of-concept’ so we could know whether or not the ideas we had wererobust in conceptual terms.

If they weren’t, then we had nothing. If, as has proven to be the case, they didmake sense and work well for the very particular business needs of the customand performance market, then we had everything.

Suffice to say that the positive scuttlebutt about BBE in May last year shock-waved around Europe so quickly and decisively that ‘first contact’ with KoelnMesse on co-joining with Cologne was under way within a month. Koeln Messeis the Cologne Expo Center; they organize and stage INTERMOT on behalf of theGerman motorcycle industry association that owns the event - the IVM.

Of all the “circles that needed to be squared” in finessing the initial BBE/AMDWorld Championship formula in this way, none proved to be a fatal flaw in the

concept, once the magnitude of being able to tap into INTERMOT’s established 200,000 plus visitor (andabundantly international) footprint was considered.Especially in the context of a European liquid-cooledmarket that has currently ‘cooled’ alarmingly, and theon-cost that a second expo in Germany in the yearswhen INTERMOT is staged represented for allqualifying sectors of the target exhibitor communityin Germany (and the rest of Europe) was taken intoaccount.

The plan is to alternate the AMD WorldChampionship between INTERMOT in “even numbered years” (2014, 2016 etc)and to stage BIG BIKE EUROPE at the same Cologne, Germany venue in the “in-between” years (2015, 2017) etc.

That way the AMD World Championship remains an annual celebration ofmotorcycle custom design, performance engineering and stock-modificationexcellence, but in expo terms we genuinely bring something new to the businesscycle.

One year gets the undoubted benefits of a much larger broader-bandattendance than any custom event could ever generate on its own, and the cross-over environment benefits that a seat at the top-table of the mainstream of theinternational motorcycle industry brings.

The following year exhibitors, customizers and visitors get the narrower-bandbenefits of design, engineering and ‘tribal’ focus business opportunity that hasbeen at the heart of the BBE concept - the specialty-focus of BBE as a stand aloneevent in contrast to the “expansion-mission” that INTERMOT represents.

Pretty cool huh?

INTERMOT has an established

200,000+ internationalvisitor footprint

Page 6: AMD 175 February

all our venue and strategic decisions, ever since 2004.

“INTERMOT has the attendance; ithas the facility; it has the large-displacement focus and, above all, it hasthe international status that isabsolutely in the crosshairs of what wehave always been trying to achieve.

“We felt we needed ‘Proof ofConcept’ for BBE before we were fullyin a position to understand the best wayforward for the Championshipcompetitor and BBE exhibitorcommunities. We needed to create aforum that champions motorcyclemodification and parts and accessorysales of all kinds. We have achieved agood start, and this formula is a solutionthat guarantees a truly robust long-termfoundation on which to be able to do so.

“Although the radio-silenceconcerning 2014 plans has beenprotracted and frustrating, it has been anecessary step sideways in order to beable to make what by any measure is agiant leap forward. At all stages thisproject has been about making gooddecisions rather than quick decisions. Anagreement of this magnitude haswarranted careful consideration andprecise attention to those devilishdetails.”

Speaking on behalf of Koeln Messe,INTERMOT Project Manager IngoRiedeberger says that “we are delightedto have made a multi-year agreement tohost the AMD World Championship.

“With AMD’s help, through itscustom show affiliation program, wehave made progress in developing thecustom content of INTERMOT in linewith our ambition to make sure thatEurope’s leading internationalmotorcycle industry and enthusiast expocan speak effectively to all sectors of theinternational powered two-wheel

industry.“This latest stage in our relationship

with AMD marks an excitingdevelopment. One that will bringconsiderable benefit to INTERMOT’svisitors, its exhibitor profile, and to thecustom industry itself.”

Full details of the Championshipclasses and schedule, and of exhibitorrates and opportunities at the AMDWorld Championship at INTERMOT inOctober will be released in February.

Details about Big Bike Europe andAMD World Championship staging atthe Cologne Expo Centre in October2015 and beyond will be released laterthis year.

Organizer Robin Bradley concludedby saying: “I think we over-achieved inorganizational and conceptual terms in2013, leaving us with a need to build aconvincing attendance in a shorterperiod of time than we had anticipated.

“By being able to help INTERMOT

consolidate the efforts it has alreadymade to offer a convincing customindustry experience for their visitors, andby allowing the parts and performanceaftermarket to use BBE as a biennial ‘fill-in’ for the years when INTERMOT is notstaged, meets the needs of the custom

community and international parts, accessory and performance industry inspades!”

The art of selling brakesIT is no surprise that if anybody can berelied upon to take “the art of sellingbrakes” to a new level in marketingdesign terms, it would have been anItalian manufacturer!

In this case, it was Brembo, and theoccasion was the ‘Milan Show’(EICMA in November last year), withan avant-garde booth dripping withdesign loveliness that had a practicalengineering message as well asintended brand status signals.

With the company now firmlyensconced as a Harley-Davidson

vendor and currently ploughinghundreds of millions of Euro intoexpanding their US facilities, thecompany pulled out all the stops atMilan to position itself as themotorcycle industry’s premium brakeproduct manufacturer.

Part meeting palace and part artgallery, Brembo’s aftermarket partsprogram was treated with the kind ofdisplay reverence normally associatedwith Europe’s collections of fashionindustry designer consumer goods orcrown jewels!

A few months ago we reportedon a new trike lift manufacturedin France by MaroloTest.

One of the world’s first specialtymotorcycle workshop equipmentmanufacturers, Marolo Test wasfounded in 1958 when it introducedwhat is thought to have been the firstever motorcycle specific dynamometer– a PTW diagnostic test bench for thesmall cc mopeds and scooters thatdominated the European market atthat time.

Founder Paul Marchand, whopioneered what has become an‘everyday’ in automotive andmotorcycle performance, tuning anddiagnostics, and fast forward to the21st Century and MaroloTest is still inthe vanguard of motorcycledynamometer design in conjunctionwith Daniel Fuchs.

These days under the ownership ofJean-Luc Marchand who bought thecompany in 2000, the Marolo-Testoffer is a turnkey motorcycle workshopsolution with many patented andproprietary designs and techniques.

Not least among these are theirModuLift and VariLift workshop liftprograms which feature pneumatic orhydraulic power options, according tocustomer preference, and a materialsand equipment specification whichdelivers ergonomic and versatileworkshop space solutions.

Their trike lift features a system ofsix removable plates for 2-, 3- or 4-wheel vehicle configuration, with theHarley-Davidson Tri Glide as theblueprint for the system.

MaroloTest’s specifications meet orexceed all worldwide approvalstandards and can be specified for US,European and other internationalpower sources.

International Sales and Marketing

Director Raphael Girard told AMDMagazine that “although we offerdealers the choice of pneumatic orhydraulic power, 80 percent of oursales are pneumatic because of theease of use, reliability and cost-effectiveness of pneumatic power.”

In addition to dynamometers andlifts, check out their MaroloBioprogram – an environmentally friendlysolvent-free parts washer system thatoffers a cost effective alternate to theincreasingly regulation-restricted issueof waste disposal.

EUROPE in general, and Italy inparticular, have long been internationallyregarded as a 'hot-bed' of motorcyclesuspension design and engineeringexcellence.

The race pedigree of its suspensionmanufacturers needs little boosting, andthe market leading suspensiontechnologies that the demands of thetrack have had on the handling solutionsdeveloped there have been marketdefining.

One of the leading Italianmanufacturers is Bitubo. Founded in1963, the company's core expertise wasvibration dampening of all kinds - fromsystems for oceanic platforms and navalengines, right through to the precisemicro applications and sensitivitiesrequired for markets such as seismicdampers and even artificial limbs.

In 1975 the company entered themotorcycle market with a now iconicdesign of a pair of shock absorbersconnected by two compensating rubbertubes - hence 'BiTubo' ... geddit?

By the late 1970s the company wasstarting to win world championships, since then having racked-up literallydozens of Italian and international racesuccesses.

In 1992 the company introduced afirst patented product, steering damperswith a Nitrogen compensating coaxialchamber; a year later it introduced its"big piston" system, the world's firstfront fork with a separate chamber; then1998 saw the launch of what wasconsidered to be the revolutionary Mono4 Regolazoni rear shock - a concept thatBitubo says is still a suspensiontechnology benchmark.

Since then, Bitubo has patented aninnovative 'FPS' hydraulic system for forkcartridges (said to be the first withhydraulic spring preload) and two yearsago introduced what is said to have beenthe first semi-active electroereologicalsystem for suspension (ER) and its firstadaptive suspension (DS) system.

These days, their range includes morethan 400 models available for superbikes, touring bikes and scooters, and inNovember 2013 Managing DirectorGianni Mardollo unveiled their entry intothe Harley-Davidson aftermarket andcruiser twin rear shocks market. Therange includes replacement and upgrade

fitments for XL 883 and 1200 Sportsters,V-Rods, tourers, Softails and Dynas.

Available with or without chromecovers, and in a choice of spring colors, the line was picked up very quickly byGerman distributor W&W Cycles (asannounced in AMD Magazine lastmonth) and includes upside down aswell as conventional compressionshocks.

Highly adjustable with tuned andmatched internal hydraulics and linear orprogressive springs according to thevehicle application, Bitubo say theirshock absorbers are easily serviced withparts kits available for each fitment.

www.bitubo.com

Gianni Mardollo, Managing Director of Italian suspension specialist BITUBO,told AMD Magazine that "although our focus has always been on sportsbike, street bike, and race suspension, we have all the components, advancedmanufacturing processes and expertise to produce excellent shocks for theHarley afermarket, and cruiser and custom V-twin markets."

www.AMDchampionship.com

For performance applications,Bitubo WMT rear twinshocks aresaid to offer "maximumpersonalization throughadjustments to the model-specificcalibration and length." Fully re-buildable, Bitubo say these shockshave been developed for highperformance and touring bikeapplications.

Bitubo enters custom shock market

Specifically for softail style bikes, these "upside down" shocks feature

a chromed steel alloy main body, spring preload adjustment system,

14mm steel rods with a nitrogenpressurized coaxial chamber;

available in pre-year 2000 and 2000and up versions

Bitubo are offering replacement andupgrade shock absorbers for most of thebest selling Harley-Davidson models, including Sportster, V-Rod, Tourer and BigTwin (Softail and Dyna) platforms

Bitubo's adjustable WMEshock absorbers areavailable with or withoutchrome covers, and in achoice of spring colorand finish, twin shocksare said to improveriding comfort andvehicle control thanks to their "internal hydraulicsystem and fitment-specific linear or progressive springs"

THE Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) is celebrating its100th anniversary this year. First incorporated as theMotorcycle Manufacturer’s Association in 1914, thename changed to include allied trades and then againto include scooters before becoming the MIC in 1969when it merged with the California based MotorcycleSafety Council. The organization initially offered and then dissolved anAssociate Member Class for dealers, bringing it back ayear ago under the presidency of Tim Buche, who tookover from Alan Isley in 1996.Although such a role is never going to bestraightforward, ex-Suzuki man Buche is widelyrespected for his executive management of the MIC, notleast through the recent downturn, ATV lead contentissues and the dramatic growth and decline seen inpowersport vehicle sales since the early to mid 1990’s.The MIC board consists of 12 members, six of whomare elected, with six appointed by the motorcyclemanufacturers and distributors who pay membershipdues based on powersport vehicle sales market share.Last year saw Polaris/Victory motorcycle man (andformer racer and trainer) Mark Blackwell take over from

Larry Little as MICBoard Chairman.Commenting on the anniversary, Blackwell said that“this is not only a proud moment for everybody whohas been a part of the MIC, it’s also significant for themotorcycle community as a whole.“As we celebrate this milestone, it’s important toremember that from the very beginning, the MIC’smission has been to preserve, protect and promotemotorcycling – and we look forward to continuing withthat mission into our next century.”In addition to Tim Buche, today’s MIC executive staffincludes General Counsel Paul Vitrano, Senior VicePresident of Government Relations Kathy Van Kleeck,Senior Vice President of Member Relations ScotBegovich, Vice President Pamela Arnette and VicePresident of Research Pat Murphy, along with a staff of20.“The MIC’s hundredth anniversary actually coincideswith another landmark event,” said Buche. “The 1914transcontinental ride of motorcyclist Erwin ‘Canon Ball’Baker”.Now, one hundred years later, the MIC will officially

support the May 2014 Cannon Ball Project, a re-creation of Baker’s famous ride led by MIC boardMember Don Emde.

100 years of industry representation

STRICTLY speaking, manufacturingmotorcycle gasketsisn’t rocket science, but science it certainlyis – and even as anon-engineer I’velearnt from many ofmy betters in thisindustry thatmaterials science isthe alpha and theomega of durabilityand performance. The reputation thatJames Gaskets has for product quality needs no introduction orendorsement from me, but sometimes it is easy to underestimate thelengths that the top echelon of product manufacturers in our industryroutinely go to in creating and maintaining their reputations. At Big Bike Europe last year, I had the pleasure of falling intoconversation with James Gaskets’ VP Ralph Cholez, and while at bestonly every third or fourth word worked for me, it is quite clear that thematerials science and engineering that goes on behind the façade oftheir discreet Dayton, Nevada factory certainly works for dealers andriders. The subject of conversation was their FoaMet gasket material, which inrecent years has been acclaimed as one of the most advanced

developments in sealingtechnology. Basically it isan NBR (NitrileButadiene Rubber)coating which, depending on theapplication, is applied either toan SAE 5052 Aluminum or SAE1010 steel. Proven in a wide range ofsealing application, NBR is afamily of unsaturatedcopolymers of 2-propenenitrile and various butadiene monomers (I didwarn you about understanding only one in three words!). The physical and chemical properties vary depending on the polymersnitrile composition, but this form of synthetic rubber, which isessentially what it is, is noted for its resistance to hydrocarbons (oil andgas) and other chemicals. Widely used in the automotive and aeronautical industries, Ralph toldme that its wide range of temperature tolerance (-40 to 108 degreescentigrade) makes it a durable and reliable addition to the range ofgasket material options that the company uses.

T-Series long block enginesfor Touring chassisS&S CYCLE has created long block versions of its T-Series engines for use in 2007 and later Baggermodels. The T111, T124, and T124LC long block engineswill bolt into stock Touring chassis. The T111 is described by S&S as the ultimateperformance engine, while the T124 is suitable for ahot rod bagger. The T124LC is a slightly lowercompression version of the T124 that is ideally suitedfor heavier bikes and trikes, as well as being moretolerant of variations in fuel quality.T-Series long block engines have the same performanceas the company’s T-Series engines for ‘99-’06 Harley-Davidson Big Twins, but are built with the new S&SSuper Stock T2 crankcases for 2007-later baggers. The cylinder heads on these engines are speciallymachined to compensate for the non-stock cylinderlength. As a result, they are compatible with manifoldsand throttle bodies with stock length intake runners. Inaddition, the breather vent bolt locations have been

adjusted so theyare in the stock

location, so stockstyle air cleaner back

THE German motorcycle market has alwayshad a strong "cross-over" habit.Independent custom shops there havealways had a "tribal" allegiance to their air-cooled v-twin mission, but the definition ofthat mission isn't as blinkered in Germany asit has been, historically, in some markets.

Making any bike look better, handle better, or gofaster is 'righteous', regardless of the platform.

That's not to say that the custom shops there (andelsewhere in Europe) don't focus and spend most of

their time on Harleys and air-cooled custom bikes, they do, but as has been seen by the evolution ofcustomizing in Europe, ever since cross-over from the streetfighter scene radically accelerateddevelopment in the 1990s, dealers there are quitehappy to take inspiration from other markets andother motorcycling traditions.

It is no surprise therefore to find that the reversehas recently started to happen in the vendorcommunity. With the sport and street bike marketscoming under unprecedented pressure in recentyears, many mainstream parts and accessorydesigners are now looking to leverage theirreputations for race-bred track-grade sports bikeparts manufacturing in the air-cooled custom partsmarket.

One such is ABM in Germany. When it comes to

top-end precision machining, weight savingmaterials applications and ergonomic designcredentials. Founded in 1985, ABM have beensitting at Europe's sport and street bike parts andaccessory manufacturing table ever since. Last yearhe unveiled'WUNDERKIND' ("Miracle Child"), a lineof custom parts and accessories developed withMartin Tischer, and based on ABM’s sport bike

experience, and seen here on the project DynaStreetbob that the company took on the Europeanexpo circuit last year.

The initial product line, launched last summer, includes a CNC machined aluminum dash board thattakes Harley or replacement gauges; adjustablefootrest with choice of detailing; replacement hornand cover kit; an air cleaner, with K&N filter, that issaid to deliver increased power due to "invertedtechnology" that gives improved breathing withoutloss of suction power and low-noise due to PassiveNoise Cancellation technology; and advanced tripletree systems that have been a centre-piece of ABMssport and street bike programs for more that 25years.www.wunderkind-custom.com

AT the 2013 World Championshipof Custom Bike Building a newclass was introduced – RetroModified – defined as “Anymodified bike, with any

drivetrain on any chassis configurationmanufactured prior to 1984. Must be basedon a pre-1984 engine, and styled to have theappearance of a motorcycle manufacturedprior to 1984. Use of some contemporaryparts/design elements is permitted.” One ofthe small number of builders to take up thechallenge of the new class was Italy’sInglourious Basterds Cycles, with BastardaSenza Gloria.

Named after the landlady of the shop the businesswas originally set up in, the build was interrupted in

the very beginning when she decided she no longerwanted the shop to be run from her premises, hencethe title given to the bike.

The first part of the project, begun in the business’first workshop, was the engine build, whichcombines a ’79 FX Shovelhead bottom end andcrankcases with the barrels and heads from a ’48Panhead. The motor has then been set up to allow itto run a carb of unknown origin, but thought to havecome from either a Ford or Chevvy, on the ‘wrong’side. Back on the right side, a pair of short, customexhaust pipes exit just in front of the cam chest. Anopen belt primary is then used as a connection to thestock four-speed kicker gearbox.

With the drivetrain sorted, Vincenzo Ciancio, whowas responsible for the build, was able to startbending the tubes to create the one-off, twin

downtube, hardtail frame. This is matched to a frontend also designed and built by Inglourious Basterds. While it looks like a regular Springer fork, it is actuallyadjustable. There are four different geometrysettings, making it, Vincenzo says, suitable forspeedway, flat track, hill climbing, or dirt track riding. Both the frame and fork were then plated with acombination of chrome, copper and nickel. The finishthen being artificially aged by being rubbed by handwith a pumice stone.

A similar range of finishes was then applied to thebike’s bodywork, which comprises a modified DKWgas tank, a one-off oil tank, that sits in the reartriangle of the frame on the right side, and anInglourious rear fender.

The wheel and tire combination that the fendercovers is made up of a 19in, drum braked wheel froma 1950s Ural with a 4in Mitas tire. The same wheeland tire combination can also be found at the front.

No doubt a key factor in Gloria garnering enoughvotes to win the Retro Modified class was theextensive use of hand-made, one-off parts. Examplesof this detailing include the clutch control. From thehandlebar-mounted lever the cable travels down theframe tube before wrapping around two pulleys onits way to the transmission. Not forgetting, of course, that the lever is also hand-made.

Further hand-made parts include the handlebarsand risers, seat, foot controls and grips.

When it came to the awards ceremony at the 2013World Championship of Custom Bike Building,Vincenzo was so pleased to be named the classwinner that once he had received his trophy he burstinto song on stage!

MANY of the bikes that haveplaced top ten in the Freestyleclass of the WorldChampionship of Custom BikeBuilding over the years have

been built by professional shops to showcasethe quality of their work. However, there havebeen occasions when privateer builders havemade the grade and that was the case in 2013with The Slippery Eel, built by Swede PontusAbrahamsson.

As a privateer builder, when Pontus built TheSlippery Eel it was never intended to be a show bike, rather it was meant as a rider, but that changed afterit was featured in the Swedish custom bike magazine

MCM. Once the magazine chose the bike as itsMachine of the Year at the end of 201,1 Pontusbegan to think about showing it, and so it was thatthe bike joined the professional builds in the Freestyleclass at the World Championship.

Due to the financial constraints of building forhimself at home, Pontus had to make the

majority of the major components on The Slippery Eelhimself, and this process began with the single, curved downtube frame. In order to keep it simple, the frame is rigid, and to give it a vintage look lugshave been created around the tube joints. To ensurethe bike was rideable, Pontus stuck to factory specrake and stretch for the frame.

However, for the front end of the build he went

for an option never offered by the Factory – a leafspring fork. Once again this was all his own work andit incorporates the bike’s handlebars into the design.

In order to get the chassis to the rolling stage,Pontus combined a set of 97 H-D hubs with 21inHarley rims, shod with Bridgestone Trailwing tires. The wheel package is completed with Swedish IRStwo-piston brake calipers gripping an IRS disc on thefront wheel and a combination disc and rotor at therear.

Having go the bike to the roller stage, Pontus thenturned his attention to the powertrain. TheShovelhead motor has been built up around a set ofDelkron cases that have been finished off with portedHarley heads. The porting work was needed due to

When Pontus Abrahamsson built The Slippery Eel it was never intended to be ashow bike. However, after scooping the Bike of the Year award from Swedishcustom bike magazine MCM, Pontus had a change of heart that saw him place topten at the 2013 World Championship of Custom Bike Building

the engine breathing through two Linkert carbs on acustom manifold and one-off Pontus-made exhaustpipes. Further detailing on the engine includes splitrocker boxes and copper lines for the gas as well asthe oil.

T o get the power from the motor a duplex chainprimary that has been left open is used and that

connects to a stock four-speed kicker gearbox. Due ot the sloping design of the frame there is not

enough room above the gearbox for the oil tank, soPontus has created a toolbox like design for an oiltank that sits in the rear triangle of the frame on thenon-drive side. The tank also features an externalfilter that is a ribbed design to help cool the oil.

The hand-made bodywork continues with the gastank that is slung below the frame’s backbone.

The finishing touches to the bike, all made byPontus, include the footpegs, seat, folding licenseplate holder and air intakes on the Linkert carbs. Infact about the only aspect of the bike’s build nottaken care of by Pontus was the paintwork, whichwas handled by Pete’s MC-lack.

While Pontus may originally have intended tohave built a simple and rideable custom, what heachieved was an internationally recognized buildwith his fellow competitors at the WorldChampionship, placing The Slippery Eel ninth in theFreestyle class.

Viola V-Twin program adds500 new parts for 2014AS reported in AMD Magazine lastmonth, S&S Cycle is stepping up thedevelopment of its Viola V-Twin (VVT)service parts program this year.

A new 290 page VVT catalogedition is being unveiled for this year, and with it come some 500 new partsand a valuable 50 page cross-reference resource - consolidating theprogram’s ‘one-stop-shop’ serviceparts mantra.

In reaching into the service partssector S&S has leveraged its workshop

experience and brand integrity to bringtogether product from leadingmanufacturers such as Perf-formFilters, Cometic Gasket, Alto, All BallsRacing, Cycle Electric and WisecoPiston.

The new part numbers this yearinclude service and install task-specifickits as well as individual parts andservice items. As the new Viola V-TwinBrand Manager and product lineanalyst Kevin Boarts put it, the aim isto “take the hard work out of what

should be the simplest of sourcingneeds.

“I know from my time working indealerships, and from my time on thecustomer services and tech-line deskshere at S&S Cycle, that waiting on theservice items you need for a customer’sbike causes nothing but frustration all-round.

“In a mature industry like ours you’dhave thought that workshops wouldbe able to source the items they findthey need quickly and efficiently, but itis still surprising how difficult it can beto get what you need at all, never mindfrom a single source.

“So that is what the Viola V-Twinprogram does for the industry - it helpsget those bikes out of the door andback on the road as quickly aspossible, allowing dealers to enhancetheir reputation for great service andto get the lift back earning moremoney”.

The latest additions include the twonew kits seen here - completeinstallation kits for cams and forstarters.
