The Year of Saint Matthew3rd Sunday of the Year

(Sunday Readings: of year A : Breviary: Week iii)

THIS SUNDAY’S MASSScripture Isaiah 8: 23 – 9: 3

Psalm 26.

R/. The Lord is my light and my help.

The Lord is my light and my help;whom shall I fear ?The Lord is the stronghold of my life;before whom shall I shrink?

There is one thing I ask of the Lord,/for this I long,

to live in the house of the Lord,/all the days of my life,

to savour the sweetness of the Lord,to behold his temple.

I am sure I shall see the Lord's goodnessin the land of the living.Hope in him, hold firm and take heart.Hope in the Lord!

1 Corinthians 1: 10 – 13, 17.Matthew 4: 12 – 23.

Intercession : Lord hear us. Response : Lord, graciously hear us

A tourist visiting the Holy Land went to the Sea of Galilee to see the place where Jesus walked on water. He thought he would take a boat ride across the lake but on being told it would cost £15.00 he declined. He told the boat owner: “I’m not surprised Jesus walked, at those prices.”

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

A priest was called at very short notice to take a service at the crematorium, as the officiate who had been booked had phoned to say he was ill. The priest drove furiously and arrived to see the mourners assembling, ready to enter the church. Having only spoken to the crematorium manager on the phone, he knew only that the name of the deceased was Lesley. In the rush he’d forgotten to ask whether he was burying a male or a female. He parked his car and quickly moved to the front of the procession as it was time for the service. He decided to turn to the nearest relative for help.‘Father, mother, sister or brother’ would describe the sex of the person he was cremating.“I’m so sorry,” he said to the mourner, “what relation was Lesley to you?”“Cousin,” came the reply.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^A honeymoon couple stayed at the Watergate Hotel in Washington. The bride was worried in case the place was still bugged, so she asked her new husband to search the room thoroughly. He looked behind the curtains, under the bed, in the wardrobes, and finally under the rug. And there, beneath the rug, he found a mysterious disc with four screws. Using his Swiss army knife, he undid the screws and threw the disc out of the window. The following morning as they checked out, the manager asked: ‘How was your room? How was the service? How was your stay at the Watergate Hotel?’‘Why so many questions?’ said the groom.‘Well,’ said the manager, ‘the room below you complained that the chandelier fell on them.’

This month we are specially thinking about the people who are on the committees of the churches of All Saints.  They work hard to ensure that our churches run the best way possible, which takes up a lot of time.  Thank you Folks.

DRIVERS REQUIREDI can see a problem looming on the horizon as we approach Christmas, that is Fathers’ John and Joseph not being able to attend the Community Churches as neither of them drive and need lifts.

We need a number of people from each community to volunteer and set up a rota. Please DO NOT LEAVE it each week to the same few people who have been helping so far.

No lifts sadly means NO MASS!

Please ring the Parish Office or speak to your Community Chairperson if you can perform this essential ministry.

This evening at the stadium the night was stirring, peopled with ten thousand shadows. And when the flood-lights had painted green the velvet of the great field,The night intoned a chorale, filled by ten thousand voices.

The master of ceremonies had given the signal to begin the service. The impressive liturgy moved forward smoothly. The ball flew from celebrant to celebrant,As if everything had been minutely planned in advance. It passed from foot to foot, slipped along the field, and flew away overhead. Each was at his post, taking the ball in turn, passing it to the next one who was there to receive and pass again. And because each one did his part in the right place,Because he put forth the effort required,Because he knew he needed all the others,Slowly but surely the ball gained groundAnd made the final goal!

While, at the end, the immense crowd flowed laboriously into the narrow streets,I reflected, Lord, that human history, for us a long game, is for you this great liturgy.A prodigious ceremony initiated at the dawn of time, which will end only when the last celebrant has complete his final rite.

GENERAL NOTICEBe aware of thieves. Please take all bags and valuables with you when you go to Holy Communion.
