CPRV Garden Club News

Do You Have A Favorite Yard in the Neighborhood?

by Glen Coats

One of the purposes for the existence of the newly formed CPRV Garden Club is to serve as an advocate for good gardening and landscaping practices for residents of Colonial Place and Riverview. To that end, we would like to know what properties you have noticed in your walks and drives through the neighborhoods that you feel represent excellence in gardening and/or landscaping. To nominate a property, simply send it’s address along with any comments you may wish to make on what you like about it to [email protected]. Selected properties will be mentioned in future newsletter articles.

We are also planning a revival of the Backyard Garden Tour that was previously held in the neighbor-hoods in 2000 & 2001. If you have a yard that you have worked hard on and are proud of, we would love to hear from you. We are especially needing more representation from Riverview since we currently have only one property from that neighborhood. Please send your name, address, and contact information to the email address mentioned above.

Lastly, Norfolk Master Gardeners have offered their expertise on Crepe Myrtle pruning. On September 14th Colonial Place will host a pruning event. Email Mark Gallagher [email protected] to get involved or learn more information on the time and location.

The Social Events Committee by Tobie Serafim

In the Spring of 2018, Artemis Stoll ap-proached the Board of the Civic League with an idea designed to bring neighbors together. She wanted to plan and organize events that were purely social to encourage residents to get to know each other. The then President of the civic league (me) established an ad hoc com-mittee with Artemis as chair, and the Social Events Committee was off and running. Arte-mis was delighted at the response to her call for committee members – it seemed she wasn’t the only one in the neighborhood who saw a need for social activities. Over the past year they have planned, organized and executed a number of wonderful events including: Front Yard Fridays, the CPRV Chili Cook-Off, the hospi-tality tents for the Front Porch Art Walk, holi-day refreshments for the December civic league meeting, a Pizza Party at Cogan’s, a Play Date at the playground for neighborhood children and their families, a Garden Party for folks interest-ed in gardening and a Meet-up at Elation Brew-ery (see photos on page 5). In June of this year the Social Events Committee became a perma-nent committee and part of the Civic League Board. Artemis and her loyal committee members (Glen Coats-Johnson, Leigh Ana Crocker, Laura Burns, Mila Carr, Nicole Pandeloglou, Jay Shurl-ing and Tobie Serafim) have had so much fun planning these events and typically have more ideas than they can reasonably expect to ac-complish. But that doesn’t stop them from seeking out new ideas and new folks to join the committee. If this sounds like something you are interested in or if you have a great idea you want to share with the committee, PLEASE send an email to Artemis at [email protected]. And keep an eye on our Facebook page (Colonial Place-Riverview Civic League) and NextDoor for announcements about their next event.

Doors of Historic Colonial Place by Eileen Shane

One way to show off our historic, beautiful, eclectic … throw in two more great adjectives … neighbor-

hood is to show off the historic, beautiful, eclectic ... throw in two more great adjectives … entranc-es to our homes!

My project, "Doors of Historic Colonial Place " is one of my first steps to do just that! I am photo-graphing the front doors of our homes in the Historic Colonial Place neighborhood and am making a photo montage to reveal to the world during the upcoming Front Porch Art Walk! They'll be availa-ble on canvas, metal and linen.

I am currently scoping the neighborhood for great doorways. You may have already seen me in the neighborhood getting some first shots. The final product will have 30 unique doorways.

This project is part one of a four part seasonal series. I am planning for Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring editions of "Doors of Historic Colonial Place ".

If you would rather not participate please text "No Thank you" and your address to 202-573-9172.

I look forward to photographing all your awesome doors!!

Don’t worry, Riverview. Your doors will be featured in a future project.

New Feature - Join the CPRV Civic League and Pay Dues Online!

by John W. Robertson, Secretary

Would you like to support the Colonial Place/Riverview Civic League and your neighborhood by joining, but just haven’t been able to find time to attend a meeting to sign up?

Would you rather pay your yearly Civic League dues while in your Pjs, from the comfort of your own cushy chair, or in the middle of the night?

Have we got good news for you! The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that residents are now able to join and pay their dues online using their credit or debit card at the CPRV Civic League website at www.cprv.net. This fea-ture has been one of the most requested by our residents, and has been under development for quite some time. It is available immediately.

Using the online form, new or renewing members are able to provide all required information and, using our pay-ment processor, Stripe, are able to pay their yearly dues using their MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express credit and debit cards.

We think you’ll find this simple and easy to use, and completely safe. Your card will never leave your hands and the card information you provide is never seen by anyone nor is it retained after the transaction.

To use this new feature, please go to www.cprv.net, select the tab labeled “CPRV Civic League”, and then select “Join or Renew Membership”. You’ll be directed to a page that explains who is eligible for membership and the vari-ous ways you can join – in person, by mail, or on line. If you choose to continue on line, at the bottom of that page you will find an information form that can be used by up to two people in the same household. Once that form is complet-ed, a window will open to allow you to enter your credit/debit card information. Once we process your information, we’ll send membership cards to you that can be used at various area businesses for great discounts on their goods and services.

It’s easier than ever to join with your neighbors to support our Civic League and to make sure our neighborhoods continue to improve and prosper. If you’re already a member, thank you! If not, please visit www.cprv.net and join today!

Crime Prevention Committee News

By Laura Burns, Chairperson

Preventing crime and protecting our property is a community effort. The Neighborhood Watch program exists in communities all over the country and is effective. The Neighborhood Watch is based on the premise of – SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. If you witness something suspicious, call the nonemergency police number to report it. Additionally, please allow the police to do their job and do not patrol the neighborhood or interact with suspicious folks.

These folks are unpredictable and could be armed. If you are involved in an incident, FILE A POLICE REPORT. If a police report is not filed, the police do not know about it and resources will be allocated elsewhere. You can file a police report ONLINE without having to wait for an officer to respond. Go to this website https://www.norfolk.gov/index.aspx?NID=3089 for more information and to file a police report. As always, report any suspicious crime or activity to the Norfolk Police. The nonemergency police number is 757-441-5610. If you see a crime in progress, call 911!

Colonial Place/Riverview Civic League General Meeting

Proposed Minutes of August 11, 2019 (unofficial)

The President and Vice-President were absent. The meeting was chaired by the

Secretary, who opened the meeting at 6:33 pm.

NPD Officer Bryan Johnson talked about recent crimes in Colonial Place and Riverview.

There were several car larcenies. He noted that NPD is putting more resources into our

neighborhoods each night and a number of officers would be patrolling on bicycles. Several

questions were asked and answered.

Robert Rogers, owner of Upscale Avenues Realty Group, spoke to the members about his

company’s new building on Colley Avenue, which will be complete soon, and about his

vision for the area of North Colley.

The previous month’s minutes were approved.

The Treasurer reported a balance on hand of $18,349.10.

Media Committee – a number of people have responded to the call for volunteers to

deliver the newsletter and all routes are presently filled. The Civic League has completed a

project to allow new members and renewing members to complete the membership form

and pay their dues using a credit card online at the cprv.net web site.

Community Improvement Committee– the committee is working on the crepe myrtle

pruning project. A short discussion was held about street repairs and paving and the

committee chairs will provide more information at a future meeting.

Membership Committee – reported 152 members and discussed the new page on the

web site to pay dues using a credit card.

A question was asked about making traffic changes within the neighborhood and the

member was referred to the Traffic Committee report on the web site and to the City for

further guidance.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

John W. Robertson

Secretary
