Dear parents and caregivers Welcome back to the 2020 school year, and a warm welcome to new families from the Dimbulah State School community. Term 1 is always busy therefore it is pleasing to see students arriving with all the necessary tools for the day’s work and quickly settling in to the daily routine of learning. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Mr Carey, who is joining the Secondary Department this year. He will be replacing Mr Mitchell who received a late transfer. Mrs Angie Berg is also returning to Dimbulah State School this year to work with our Pre-Prep Playgroup and religion. Throughout the week we have been busy electing student leaders. The quality and dedication to which the students approached their speeches was of a very high standard. The leadership speeches where held across the week, and were exemplary. Congratulations to Chelbie Pickering and Alicia Westwood, as Secondary School Captains, and to Harper Brunjes and Jaz Hrkac as Primary School Captains. A full Dimbulah State School leadership report is contained within this newsletter. With the start of the school year only two weeks old, it is appropriate to highlight Dimbulah State School’s expectations regarding behaviour. Students will:

a) be respectful, b) be a learner, c) co-operate (with all members of the school community), and d) be safe.

A quick reminder regarding mobile phones and any other digital sound device; if brought to school they are to be handed in to the office prior to the commencement of the school day and collected at the end of the day. While the start of the year is always busy, there are some changes to school and district sport this year. Due to a very congested term 1 of district sport trials, we have made the decision to hold the annual Dimbulah State School Swimming Carnival early in term 4. Cross Country and Track and Field carnivals will return to normal; end of term 1 and 2 respectively. Across the next few weeks, many district sporting trials are being held across the Tablelands. The following is a list of sporting trials that Dimbulah State School students have expressed an interest in attending: Tuesday 18 February - Rugby League Girls (14-15Yrs) 4.00-7.00pm Wednesday 19 February - Touch Football Boys & Girls (13-15Yrs) 4.00-6.00pm Thursday 20 February - Football (Soccer) Girls (13-15Yrs, 16-19Yrs), Boys (16-19Yrs) Friday 21 February - Cluster Trials Day 1 (10.00am-2.00pm)

Rugby League Boys (14-15Yrs, 16-18Yrs)

Football (Soccer) Boys (13-16Yrs)

Netball Girls (13-15Yrs, 16-19Yrs) Friday 21 February - Basketball Boys & Girls (10-12Yrs) 4.00-6.00pm Friday 6 March - Cluster Trials Day 2 (10.00am-2.00pm)

Netball Girls (10-12Yrs)

Rugby League Boys & Girls (10-12Yrs) 2020 will see Dimbulah State School students participate in NAPLAN online for the first time. Further trials will be run in the lead up to testing, to afford our students, as smooth a transition as possible. All tests will be conducted online, except for Year 3 Writing, which will still be paper based. My door and that of the staff at Dimbulah State School is always open, so if you have any queries or concerns regarding your child/s progress please contact the school or come in for a discussion. Looking forward to positive and productive year. Finally, it was reassuring to read that our students, staff and school community were recognised as “one of the top Tablelands Schools” in our local Express newspaper this week. Our mission is remain in this ranking and we will continue to live up to and achieve this educational expectation.

Hundreds of kilometres of dirt, sweat and fun - all in the name of charity.

My name is Amaya Goldsworthy. I am a student at Dimbulah P-10 State School and have just graduated from

primary school. Recently, Dimbulah State School were lucky recipients of a Cairns to Karumba

(C2K) Charity Bike Ride Grant - “Giving bush kids a fair go” which, thanks to the P&C’s successful application,

enabled my entire Year 6 class to spend a day out on the Great Barrier Reef exploring Green

Island and enjoying its many wonders which is something rural children, like

myself, rarely get the opportunity to do.

Last year I was extremely fortunate to ride C2K “Dirty Boys & Girls” and I

have to say, it could only be described as a life changing experience. From

the moment the “DIRTY, DIRTY, DIRTY – Oi, Oi, Oi” chant from our

iconic, legendary pack leader, Llew Davies, went up at the starting line in

Cairns, to the moment we unclipped after crossing the finish line in

Karumba, it was nothing short of a fun-filled, action packed, 7-

day adventure.

I am very much looking forward to the 2020 C2K to do it all over again. I would like to encourage you all to dig

deep and give generously if you know of anyone who is doing the

C2K ride in 2020. A special mention also needs to made to the hard-

working, dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that

this incredible event goes ahead every year and the educational needs

of rural children can be catered for.

Happy trails…

Amaya Goldsworthy
