A message from the Principal

This week is National Reconciliation Week. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all

Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how

each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for NRW remain the

same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the

reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision

respectively.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward,

creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian

community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. For further information about

National Reconciliation Week, please see https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-

reconciliation-week/

The parent information session, Supporting Literacy and Numeracy at home – a guide for

parents/carers, was repeated on Tuesday evening in a twilight session. Thank you to all of the

parents/carers who braved the cold and wet weather to attend. Mrs Dicketts will be repeating

the session for Kindergarten parents on Wednesday of next week, 5 June from 2:30pm – 3:00pm.

This session will focus mostly on reading and will be held in the VC room in the bottom of the

Lodge. Please enter through the David Street gates and sign in at the office before moving to

the VC room.

The PSSA winter competition starts in Week 6 of this term, Friday 7 June. Team selections will be

finalised and permission notes will be sent home by the end of the week. This year, we will have

junior and senior teams in soccer, netball and AFL. The cost to students is $3.50 per week to

cover the buses. This can be paid each week on Friday mornings or in $10.00 amounts every 3

weeks. If a student is absent or a game is cancelled due to inclement weather then the money

will carry over to the next payment period. Following consultation with the P&C, parents/carers

are able to pay the full $30.00 through the office or online at the commencement of the PSSA

competition but a refund will not be available if games are cancelled or students are absent.

The first knock out round for The Premiers Spelling Bee will be held in Week 7 this term for students

in Years 3-6. Students in Year 2 are able to participate upon special request to classroom

teachers (proficient spellers only). Spelling lists are available from the Arts Unit on https://

www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/premiers-spelling-bee.

You will require a password to access the spelling lists which you can receive from

your child's classroom teacher, or at the office. For copyright reasons, the password

cannot be published.

Whole school representatives will be chosen in Week 10 to progress to regional

finals. If you have any further questions, please contact Mrs Bec Border, Premier's Spelling Bee

Coordinator. Happy spelling!!

As the weather slowly changes I am seeing a number of shivering little bodies coming to school

without jumpers. I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents/carers that we have

mountains of lost property in the designated areas for each class and in the office area. Where

clothing is labelled we are usually able to reunite the owner with the clothing but unfortunately,

much of the clothing is unmarked or, in some cases, still bearing the name of previous owners

who have left the school a significant time ago. Please label your child’s clothing and if you are

looking for a missing item, please check lost property. Many of the jumpers will be washed and

placed into the clothing pool at the end of the term.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) Notification

for Parents and Carers: All Government and non-Government schools across Australia are

required to participate annually in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School

Students with Disability (NCCD). All Australian schools collect data on their students who are

receiving adjustments to meet additional learning and support needs in accordance with their

obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and Disability Standards for Education

2005. This data is provided to the Australian Government to assist in the development of a

consistent, national picture of the education needs of students with disability. The data provided

to the Australian Government by the NSW Department of Education is provided in such a way

that it cannot be used to identify any individual student or school.

The definition of a student with a disability is a very wide one and isn’t just for those students who

receive special funding or have a medical diagnosis. We will be collecting information already

available in the school and the support that is being provided to students with a disability as well

as students who are receiving adjustments to their learning. This can include support from the

Learning and Support teachers and School Learning and Support Officers. Also included in this

data collection are those students with medical conditions, eg Anaphylaxis, Diabetes, Asthma,

etc. More accurate data will help the Government plan for students with a disability or learning

need. The data collection will have no direct impact on your child and he/she will not be

involved in any testing process. The NSW Department of Education will provide the data to the

federal government in such a way that no individual student or school will be able to be

identified. In this way, we will ensure the privacy and confidentiality of all students. Please do not

hesitate to contact the Learning and Support team if you require any additional information.

General information about the national data collection can be found on the Australian

Government Department of Education and Training website at https://www.education.gov.au/

I would like to remind parent/carers to be mindful that a number of our students are

anaphylactic and very sensitive to nuts and products containing nuts. Contact can be fatal and

does not always require the nuts or nut products to be ingested. Whereas the school is NOT a nut

free zone, restricting the nuts and nut products brought to school in lunchboxes will limit the

possibility of contamination at school.

Congratulations to Grainne Bulters-Trainor (5AC)

Annabella Roberts (5AB) Oskar Baldwin (6LCB)

and Elspeth Morris (6LB) who have been

selected to attend Riverina Choral Camp, held

at Borambola, over Week 5. I am sure they will all

make the most of this wonderful opportunity to

share and develop their talent for singing, and

that they will represent our school proudly

throughout the experience.

Yesterday the K – 2 sports day was held and was a very exciting day for all involved. The K – 2

students were “pumped” early on in the day and participated enthusiastically. Unfortunately, the

weather did beat us in the end and the races had to be postponed due to the gale force winds

that whipped up after afternoon recess. The races will be conducted during sports days next

week.

Kindergarten races will be held on Monday 3 June at 11.45am until 1.10pm on the Block. Year 1

& 2 races will be held on Friday 7 June at 11.45am until 1.10pm on the Block. Parents are

welcome to come along again and enjoy the fun. The students are encouraged to wear their

sports uniforms or house colours again.

The Zone Cross Country Carnival was held on Friday 24 May. We were represented by 48

students who won the overall points tally, with Albury Public School winning the champion

school. Congratulations also to Charlie Gibson, Isabelle Rae, Jessica Morgan, Thomas Mack,

Thomas Sheather and Fin Bready who took out the age champions in their age groups. We now

have 16 students who will attend the Riverina Carnival at Gundagai in two weeks.

The catch up day for the zone athletics carnival was held at Les O’Brien Athletics Precinct

yesterday. Our students did a fantastic job in freezing conditions and even had to contend with

hail yet again. Results are still being finalised but many of the students look to have made it

through to the Riverina carnival in Term 3, in addition to those who had already qualified. This

information will be available soon.

The Paul Kelly Cup AFL gala day will be held this Friday at Jelbart Park. We are sending two boys

teams and two girls teams to play against schools from around the Albury and Corowa region.

The enthusiasm from our students has been fantastic and I am sure that they will do well. Good

luck on Friday.

Jude and Emma Mobile 0422 701 463 email [email protected]

Thank you to all who attended our monthly P&C meeting on Tuesday evening. We will share the

minutes on several platforms, once we have a minute to compile them!

We are in desperate need of some volunteer help in some key roles. Each one is a small role,

and will give you a great sense of community, connection and generosity.

1. Canteen Manager, who can do basic bookkeeping, pop in to the canteen for a quick chat

on a regular basis (weekly at least) and ensure things are running smoothly.

2. Fundraising Committee leader, who will be excited to implement their own and P&C ideas

about fundraising events. You will lead a team in organising school-community building events

(like an outdoor cinema night, and a silent auction evening). Additional fundraising committee

members are also always welcome and appreciated.

3. Class Parent Coordinator who will ensure that every class has a representative parent to

facilitate the sharing of information.

4. The Environment Committee are doing some incredible work which you will be hearing about

soon. We would love some more enthusiastic and interested members on our team.

We have many wonderful volunteers who are happy to help with organisation prior to events,

or help on the day, however all of our “usual suspects” have reached capacity in the

leadership roles they can perform.

If you are interested , or have questions , please get in touch, we would love to have you!

Year 6 Canberra Excur-

Year 6 students from our school have

recently undertaken an education tour

of the national capital. Students were

given the opportunity to participate in a

variety of educational programs with a

focus on Australia’s history, culture,

heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of

all young Australians being able to visit the national capital

as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.

To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the

Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per

student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to

the school upon completion of the excursion. This rebate is

deducted from the final cost of the excursion.
