A message from the Principal

As you are reading this, Year 3 is visiting the Great Aussie Resort at Wymah for the annual Year 3

camp. Once again, excursions and opportunities such as this, are very important for developing

student’s resilience, problem solving and independence, along with the practical academics

and socialisation curriculum. A huge thank you to Mr Fyffe and his team for pulling the excursion

together and for making this opportunity available to our Year 3 students. I am hopeful that the

weather will be kinder than the 45 degrees we endured last year.

Thank you to all the parents/carers and friends who sponsored students for our recent lap-a-

thon. Please continue to send the money in. I know that this has been a busy term with many

competing financial requests and I appreciate the way so many people repeatedly support our

school. I would also like to acknowledge the anonymous donation (again this year) from the

undisclosed Lucas Little for $700.00. Your very very kind donation and your thoughtful and

beautiful note of thanks is so appreciated by all the staff and students at Albury PS.

Next Monday, 9 September, we are holding our inaugural Student Leadership Breakfast in the

hall. The breakfast commences at 8:00am and will feature special guest speakers Karlie

Travassaros and Thomas Stefanou, Albury High School Captains, and the Honorable Kevin Mack,

Mayor of Albury. I know that the attending current and aspiring Year 6 school leaders will find

the experience very informative and rewarding. A huge thank you to Albury HS for helping us to

make this opportunity a reality.

In conjunction with the APS P&C, the school will be hosting some informative parent/carer

information sessions.

Tuesday 24 September 6 – 7pm : Understanding Adolescents, Jayne Halls, Mission Australia

Tuesday 22 October 6 – 7pm: Cybersafety, Sen Con Tanya Thompson, NSW Police

Both sessions will precede the P&C meeting and light refreshments will be served. Please register

with the office beforehand. Both of these sessions have been requested by the parent body and

I hope to see as many parents/carers as possible attending.

Congratulations to Jericho Ellao in Year 6 and Freddy Tari in Year 4 who

have been selected to receive prizes in the River of Stories competition,

Write around the Murray Festival 2019. Jericho entered a short story in

the Stage 3 section of the competition, entitled Star Diving. Freddy

entered a story in the Stage 2 section entitled, A Godly teacher. Well

done Jericho, Freddy and any other students who entered the

competition. Competitions such as these are another great way to gain

experience writing and publishing for a purpose, not just a school assignment.

We have had a very large number of students express an interest in opting into Special

Education: Ethics. A number of students who have expressed an interest to participate in Special

Education: Ethics (SEE) are currently receiving Special Religious Education (SRE). If parents/carers

do not wish their child to continue to attend SRE they must inform the school in writing. Only then

will these students be able to nominate to participate in Special Education: Ethics. We currently

have 4 people trained to teach Ethics at Albury PS. As the number of students who have

expressed interest in receiving Ethics far exceeds the number of available teachers, an offer to

participate in SEE (Ethics) note will be sent home next week. Students will be accepted into

Ethics classes on receipt of the note to the office, on a first in basis. Students who miss out will be

waitlisted. We anticipate that it will not be possible to offer Ethics to all year levels but we hope

to begin Ethics classes before the end of Term 3.

If you are interested in training to be a teacher of Ethics, please contact Primary Ethics on

info@primary ethics.com.au.

Quote of the week: “While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what

life is all about”.

Premier’s Reading Challenge:

The Reading Challenge has now closed for 2019.

All children who participated are to be congratulated on their efforts. This

year 95 children successfully completed the Challenge. This is a wonderful

result and represents just over 15% of the school population. It is

anticipated that the certificates will be presented mid Term 4. Eight children will receive Gold

certificates as they have completed the Challenge for four years. Three students will receive

Platinum awards as they have completed the Challenge for a total of seven years. The Platinum

certificates will be presented at the Presentation Day in Term 4.
