Welcome to Term 2. I hope that you were able to enjoy some quality family time and a break
over the Easter break. Term two is always crazy as we have a number of camps, assessments,
reports and colder, shorter days, although personally I am very happy to finally feel some cooler
weather. The autumn colours have finally emerged too.
This week, Year 4 are on their major excursion to Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre at
Wagga Wagga. Despite the threat of wet weather, I know that all students will have a rewarding
experience and learn much about themselves whilst they are away. Our Year 6 students leave
for their Canberra excursion on Wednesday 15 May, returning Friday 17 May.
On Monday of this week the staff met for a staff development day. We spent time discussing
and refining our Anaphylaxis procedures and response following feedback from our recent
Anaphylactic incident, in consultation with Department WHS representatives. The staff also
worked on developing the expected behaviours associated with our new Positive Behaviour for
Learning (PBL) values. This process will require a lot of further discussion and will probably take
another six months to perfect and finalise. Our new values will be revealed in the next two weeks
with a small celebration.
It was terrific to see the many families
who joined us for the annual march
down Dean Street last week to
commemorate ANZAC day. Following
the march, our school leaders laid a
wreath at the memorial, as part of the
10:00am service. A huge thanks to Mrs
Woodward and Mrs Jacobs for their
coordination of the school event last
term and the march/wreath laying on
ANZAC day. Thanks also to the school
student leaders for their participation
on behalf of the school.
I would like to congratulate and welcome (again) Mr Jason Weaven who has been permanently
appointed to Albury PS as Deputy Principal. Jason brings a solid and extensive wealth of
leadership experience and knowledge to the role. Congratulations also to Ms Joanne Cameron
(now Mrs Scherf following her recent marriage) who is the new Assistant Principal at Albury PS,
filling the permanent position vacated by Miss Brooker’s departure from Albury PS. I look forward
to continuing the great work we have already commenced with these two excellent school
leaders.
Next Tuesday, 7 May, is school photo day. Students are reminded to return their photo packs and
money next Tuesday. Full school winter uniform is to be worn on the day.
On 14, 15 and 16 May students in Years 3 and 5 will be sitting the NAPLAN tests as part of the 2019
national cohort. Students will participate in assessments in Literacy (Reading, Writing, Spelling
and Grammar) and Numeracy. Any students who are sick on a test day will have the opportunity
to complete a missed test/s on Friday 17 May. If you have any questions about the NAPLAN
testing, please don’t hesitate to contact the classroom teacher for further information.
If you are interested in training to teach Ethics at Albury PS or other NSW Department schools
please contact Primary Ethics on 0410 348 574. In response to our request for training in teaching
Ethics, the training will be coming to this area soon.
Just a reminder that, due to staffing shortages, the canteen will be closed on Friday (tomorrow).
If you have some spare time to either work in the canteen or assist with collecting food from the
Food Bank or suppliers, please contact the canteen or P&C to let them know. Every bit helps the
P&C to continue to coordinate this fabulous service for students (and staff).
Wishing you a productive and successful term.
Quote of the week: “Our task, regarding creativity, is to help children climb their own mountains,
as high as possible. No one can do more.” Loris Malaguzzi

On the last day of term an ANZAC Service was held, led by student leaders to commemorate
the service and sacrifice of all Australians who served our country. Our student leaders honoured
our school by delivering a professional and respectful service. In attendance was special guest
Warrant Officer Class 1, Glen McFarlane (pictured with his son Finley) who spoke about the
meaning of ANZAC day and the importance of commemorating our history. In addition, we
were fortunate to have one of our former, very talented students, Peter Travosarros, return to
play the ‘Last Post’ for us on his trumpet. Thank you to students, teachers, parents, family and
friends for sharing in our service.
ANZAC Commemorations
Albury Public School at the Albury City ANZAC March Thursday 25 April 2019
A huge thank you to all the students, families and teachers who attended the Albury ANZAC
March. It was an honour to be a part of such a proud tradition and even more so to have
shared that honour with the dedicated students and staff of Albury Public School. Our school
captains, Mia Sheather and Ryan Kemp along with the vice captains, Lenny Koller and Zoe
Smith, did Albury Public School proud at the monument after the march, laying a wreath on
behalf of all of our students in honour of the service men and women past, present and future.

School News
Warm Welcome
We welcome back to Albury Public School, Jordan Double from Albury High School, who will be
completing Student Work Experience this week and next Monday. It is great to have a past
student back in our school. This further continues the very strong relationship that exists between
the two schools.
Opportunity Class Placement 2020 - Year 5
Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and talented students who may otherwise
be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help
gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented
students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the
appropriate level.
Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results
of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class
Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019.
The closest Opportunity Class is in Wagga Wagga. If you would like to have your child
considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2020, you need to apply soon. You will need to
apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 30 April 2019 at
https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/
year-5
The application website opens on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. You
must apply by the due date.

P&C Canteen News
Did you know:…?
The P&C runs the school canteen and employs part time staff to run it.
The aim of the canteen is to provide great quality nutritional food at a reasonable price, for
the benefit of children and the convenience of parents.
Any profits generated go straight back to the school via P&C funded projects.
We have not had a price increase across most of the menu for several years.
Volunteers are always welcome and there are many helpful jobs that don’t require food or
money handling.
The canteen committee held a meeting over the break and with the input from our canteen
bookkeeper and P&C treasurer (thank you So Young and Don Smith), we understand that we
will need a moderate price rise to maintain the canteen’s viability. The prices have been
updated in Quickcliq, and the new menu with correct prices will be printed soon.
We also have an opening coming soon for a part time employee, for 2-3 days a week. Casual
employment is also under consideration. More information will be forthcoming, but please
begin to consider this excellent opportunity. We have Cate working in the canteen on
Wednesdays and would like to welcome her to the team!!
Due to staffing issues the canteen will be Closed this Friday 3 May.
There will be no lunch orders and no counter service. We intend to be up and running every
day from week 2 onwards.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Last term we received the exciting news that our canteen meets the NSW Healthy Canteen
Strategy!! This is excellent news for Albury Public School but healthy food needs more
preparation and we need helpers to keep providing this delicious healthy food. Just one hour
of your time would be really valuable. No special skills are required and it’s the easiest way to
do something good for your kids and community.
Menu—Please note the new Winter Menu and price changes. Quickcliq will be updated
accordingly and from next week the new menu will be available.
The menu can be viewed online at www.quickcliq.com.au

Our new menu adopts the NSW Healthy School Canteens policy of 75% of each category being
everyday foods. All other items are occasional foods (3.5 Health Star Rated or pending rating).
Volunteers are warmly welcomed and always appreciated in our canteen. The labour required to
provide these healthy choices makes mornings quite hectic, (especially Thursday & Friday).
Popping in at Lunch & Recess to help serve is a great way to connect with the students, staff, and
other volunteers.
News items and Volunteering requests are posted in the Albury Public School weekly newsletter.
Ordering online is another way to support the canteen. Over 70% of the student body have signed up already, which has significantly reduced the time
spent processing bag orders.
