Albury Public School – The pursuit of best practice to ensure excellence in learning, teaching

and leading.

Week 8 Term 4 2018

Oh my goodness, how the year is almost over and we have moved into double craziness and busyness, if that is indeed possible! Both this week and next will be incredibly busy with so many end of year activities happening. Thanks to all the wonderful community with smiles and a great sense of humour. It certainly makes this time of year easier.

Today I announced the sport House Leaders for 2019. Following speeches and elections last week, the following students have been successful attaining the leadership positions:

Well done and congratulations.

Feedback from staff and parents this year highlighted the need for clear guidelines around the implementation of sport at Albury Public School. Extensive consultation with parent groups and the wider school community and staff has enabled the Sports Committee to develop a set of school developed guidelines for the organisation and management of sport and physical activity. The guidelines provide information, procedures and practices for students, staff and community stakeholders. The guidelines reflect the consultation process and ethos of the school and establish a framework for sport within the school. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback and supported the committee during the consultative process. These guidelines are now available on the school website and will be implemented from the beginning of 2019.

Just a reminder that permission notes and nomination forms for the 2019 school swimming carnival went home last week and need to be returned by this Friday. All students in Years 3 – 6 and any students in Year 2 (2019) who turn 8 and can competently compete in the 50 metre swimming events, will attend the carnival on Friday 1 February 2019 from 9:00 – 2:30pm. If your child is a very capable swimmer, please indicate this clearly (and accurately) on the permission note.

The cost for the swimming carnival is $3.50 per student. Season passes will be honoured, please include the season pass number on the permission note. As this carnival is in the first week of Term 1, permission notes, money and nomination forms for events MUST be returned to the school by this Friday 7 December this year to allow staff to enter the data into the new tracking system, Meet Manager. Students will be walking to and from the Albury Swim Centre. This swimming carnival is the selection trial for the Albury district swimming carnival and all students considering selection for the Albury district swimming carnival MUST nominate for their events prior to the carnival and are expected to participate on the day to qualify.

Learn to swim has continued this week and been extremely valuable for the students who attended. Students in Years 3 – 6 who are attending Learn to swim and are also in a PSSA team will attend Learn to swim, not PSSA, for this week. All summer PSSA sports will conclude this week.

Thanks to the parents/carers who have already registered their interest in coffee and cake for tomorrow, Thursday, 6 December. The session will commence at 10:00am and will be in the VC room near 3LB classroom (The Lodge). We will kick off the session with a presentation on NAPLAN and our school’s results. The aim of the session is to look at our school plan, 2018 progress and feedback to inform 2019 school planning. If you are able to attend please let the office know.

Semester Two reports are being finalised this week and will be sent home on Friday 14 December. The reports are an indication of how your child has performed in the second half of the year and should be considered alongside the parent teacher interviews, student work samples, student led conferences and other discussions with classroom teachers and support staff. At Albury Public School we report using the 5 point achievement scale, mandated by the Department of Education (A-E scale). All NSW syllabus documents recognise achievement at “C” as proficient. If your child is achieving “sound” on their report, they are demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content at proficiency, that is, they are performing at the expected level for their year/stage of schooling. If you have any further questions in relation to the achievement scale, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Next week, Wednesday 12 December, is Presentation Day for Years 2 – 6. The assembly will begin at 10:30am in the hall at Albury High School. Please ensure that permission notes for students to attend have been returned. Kindergarten and Year 1 celebrations are on Thursday 13 December. I look forward to seeing you at one of these exciting events.

Albury Public School Mo Day

Thank you to everyone who participated in Mo Day and contributed to it’s success.

Some very impressive mos could be seen around the school on Thursday and the cake store was a hit.

We managed to raise a very healthy $820.15 for the Movember Foundation. They raise much needed funds for men’s health. Good work everyone!

Kindergarten Presentation Day Date: Thursday 13 December 2018

1.10pm-1.40pm on the Meadow.

Our Kindergarten Presentation Assembly will

follow at 2.00pm in the hall.

Year 1 Teddy Bears' Picnic

12pm-1pm, Thursday 13 December 2018

Parents and friends are invited to join us for a special Teddy Bears' Picnic end-of-year celebration to commemorate a wonderful year of learning in Year 1. We will meet in the hall for a short assembly, presentation and sing-along then enjoy afternoon tea and play picnic games with our teddy friends.

Yarning Group

We would like to establish a Yarning Group here at Albury Public School to create a community of support for our Aboriginal students and their families.

All interested members of our school community are warmly invited to join us, meet new and old friends and have a cuppa and yarn next Thursday 6 December from 2-3pm in the staffroom.

We would value your input to our discussions about the future of Aboriginal education for all students at Albury Public School and strategies to support the learning and wellbeing of our Aboriginal students.

Once again, the families of Albury Public School are asked to donate to the reverse Christmas tree. Gifts for people of all ages can be placed under the tree in the front office from now until Monday 17 December. These gifts should be unwrapped and must be new. Non-perishable food items, such as Christmas treats, can also be placed under the tree. This year our donations will be given to The Salvation Army for distribution to local people in need.

Thank you in anticipation of your generosity.

Student Recreation Feedback

We made some strategic changes to our playground organisation and

break times this term which have improved the quality of students’

recreation, social engagement and readiness for learning. Thankyou to

the teaching and administrative staff, our amazing canteen staff and

parent community for your flexibility in supporting these changes. Here is

a summary of some of our experiences so far:

Opening more spaces to play, including the gym at both breaks and the front playground

at recess, has reduced student density across all areas of the playground.

The Creation Space, our indoor area for supported play and social development which is

staffed by Learning Support Teachers, is now available to students every day.

Playground duty teachers are able to direct students here if they need some extra

assistance finding a friend to play with, or an activity to engage them.

Opening the Creation Space at lunchtime and the library at recess means that there is

always a quiet, closely supervised area available to students.

The gym has proven incredibly popular for our K-1 students to practice their ball-handling

and cooperative skills with age-appropriate equipment under close supervision.

The high levels of activity (and noise!) in the gym have meant that our ‘chill zone’ for all

students is not as relaxing as we had envisaged! We are looking at options to relocate

this area and the outdoor library next year.

Moving K-1 student ball games out from the COLA has opened this space for some fast-

paced basketball action by our Stage 2 and 3 students.

Buddy-class eating supervision has created a calm, pleasant environment for students to

eat their lunch and for teachers to check-in on student wellbeing.

The change of lunch eating time, from 12.40pm to 11am, has meant that most students

are having a substantial meal earlier in the day. Anecdotal reports from teachers indicate

that, combined with the shorter lunch break, this may be improving student engagement

and concentration in the middle session.

There has been a reduction in the number of major negative behaviour incidents for

Term 4.

It is certainly much more pleasant for all to have our longer break earlier, before it gets

too hot!

We would greatly appreciate feedback from our school community to

continue to refine our model for student recreation. Please share your

experiences and suggestions by completing a very brief online survey (2

-3 minutes) here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9MJ875S

Alternatively, I would be very happy to hear your thoughts in person. Please don’t hesitate to

grab me in the playground for a chat, or call the school office to speak over the phone or make

an appointment to meet. If you are available to attend the Coffee and Cake tomorrow from 10-

11am it would be another excellent opportunity to speak with Lianne and me about student

recreation.
