Over the course of the timeyou’ve served in the military,I’m sure you’ve heard others gripe

about an issue that’s bothered them.Maybe on occasion you’ve been the onedissatisfied for a good reason. You mayfeel your concerns fell on deaf ears;nobody seemed to care or took time tolisten to what you felt was wrong with the“system”.

You have an opportunity right now toprovide feedback to your Alamo Wingleadership by participating in the Air ForceClimate Survey. This is an internet-basedquestionnaire designed to provide AirForce leaders with candid feedback onissues impacting effectiveness. The openperiod for inputs runs through November23.

Many meetings areconducted with alcoholpresent. Groups will meet ona regular basis at a local barafter work. Mixing businessand pleasure is the in thing.It makes you part of thegroup. Somehow it even

gives people credibility. Wein the Reserve are notimmune to this deception.

After-hours meetings areheld all the time. Functionsare always popping up. Thefirst line of business isordering something to drink.When someone comes backfrom a temporary duty, theconversation often windsaround to who went towhich clubs.

The holidays are full ofjoyful events and alcohol isusually available. Having agood time is okay, butknowing one’s limit is alifesaver.

It is our responsibility towatch out for each other. Ifyou see a person who lookslike they’ve had too much,take their keys away, offer

them a ride home, anythingto keep them from gettingbehind the wheel. Even if noone is injured in an accident,you have saved a life inmore ways than one.

Here is something thatsurprised me, beforeSeptember 1, 2001, it waslegal to have an opencontainer of alcohol in yourvehicle. To this day you canstill buy beer in single cansat convenience stores. Infact the store even has smallbags that fit single cansperfectly. I inquired aboutthis once, and the clerkresponded, either the storesells single cans, or thecustomers will steal them. ACatch 22 situation for sure.Legislation for the bill wasstarted on February 14, 2001

Sensible holiday celebrations save lives

WASHINGTON—The Air Force’sfuture path requires more jointness andinterdependence between the totalforce, sister services and coalitionpartners.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. T.Michael Moseley spoke Oct. 11 aboutthis vision for the Air Force, but beganwith a vision of its past.

The Air Force has been at war nowfor nearly 15 years, he said. Conflictkicked off in January 1991 in Iraq andKuwait with Operation Desert Storm.Since then, the general said, the AirForce has been continuously engagedin no-fly zones over Iraq, Bosnia andHerzegovina, the Horn of Africa,Afghanistan — and once again, Iraq.

“This is the most combat experi-enced American Air Force we’ve hadsince the end of World War II,”General Moseley said.

Mosley: AF moving toward interdependenceThe Air Force’s newly appointed

leader said he doesn’t see a break inthe trend. In fact, he thinks demandson the U.S. military and its coalitionpartners will go on for a long time.

“This country is at war, and we areat war with a very adaptive, very lethalopponent,” he said. “It is my sense thatwe will be in a global war on terrorismfor our lifetime. This is a long war — itwill ebb and flow. We will deal withthis as a joint team, we will deal withthis as a coalition team with interna-tional partners, and we will deal withthis as an interagency team.”

Working in the joint environment willforce the Air Force to find new waysto work together with sister servicesand to share resources that in the pastthey may not have. In fact, it wasn’tuntil recently, interdependence be-tween military services began to takeon a more important role, the generalsaid.

“We’ve truly evolved beyond juststaying out of each others way, or de-conflicting activity,” he said. “Up untilDesert Storm, we made an art out ofde-conflicting. In the Desert Stormtime frame, we began to integrate a bit— to not just stay out of each other’sway. We worked very hard on integra-tion.”

Finding ways to improve integrationis one of General Moseley’s priorities.

Examples include a light cargoaircraft the Air Force and Army arelooking into and sharing aerial surveil-lance aircraft, like the Global Hawk,with the Navy.

“It makes perfect sense to continueto partner, even in a more aggressiveway, with land component, maritimecomponent, and special operationscomponent activities,” GeneralMoseley said. “We have lots and lotsof data to show this is the right way todo it.”

CLIMATE SURVEYAir Force Reserve Command

leaders want everyone, military andcivilian, to respond to the 2005 AirForce Climate Survey. The surveyruns until Nov. 23.

“Last year was the first time AFRCparticipated in the survey, and theresults were tremendous,” said Lt.Gen. John Bradley, AFRC com-mander. “The 33-percent participationrate sent a clear message that ourpeople are committed to improving the

Air Force.“This year our goal is 100-percent

participation across the command,” hesaid.

The survey measures how peoplefeel about leadership, supervision,training, recognition and other aspectsof the Air Force.

The survey covers competencieslike communication, teamwork, judg-ment and adaptation under pressure.

“Since the survey software protectsone’s identity, I encourage everyone tobe honest and straightforward in theirresponses,” said Chief Master Sgt.Jackson Winsett, AFRC commandchief master sergeant. “The surveydata will be as good as the respondentsmake it. It’s our opportunity to standup and be counted.”

The survey can be done online athttps://afclimatesurvey.af.mil/ anytimeduring the survey period from anycomputer.

Results will be released in Februaryto unit leaders.

“Evacuating your home in the pathof a hurricane is certainly not the wayto experience your first airplane flight,”he said.

Sergeant Campos does not claim tobe anyone’s hero. In fact, he is re-markably humble about his role in theevacuation. He said the 433rd AWband of brothers and sisters is respon-sible for completing this and everymission.

“You just don’t get on an airplaneand go,” he said. “The support systemmakes it happen. It takes a team ofmaintainers, engineers, pilots, com-mand post, everyone – to pull off amission.”

Although Rita was only a category-two hurricane with 120 mile-per-hourwinds at landfall, Texas Senator KayBailey Hutchinson said in a CNNinterview the original damage estimatewas $8 million in losses and it couldhave been worse.

She gave credit to the White Houseand the military for pre-positioningsupplies and for a successful evacua-tion.

“We called the White House. TheWhite House jumped right on it. Therewere planes in there. And thousandswere evacuated who were elderly andsick,” Senator Hutchinson said duringher interview.

When Hurricane Rita madelandfall between SabinePass, Texas, and Johnson’s

Bayou, La., in the early morning hoursof Sept. 24, it unleashed its destructiveforces on a deserted area, which canbe attributed, in part, to the efforts ofthe Reserve Airmen and C-5A Galaxyaircraft of the 433rd Airlift Wing.

The 68th Airlift Squadron flew fiveevacuation missions, with 14 sorties,Sept. 22 and 23, transporting 662passengers and 90.5 cargo tons to andfrom the area in the hurricane’sprojected path. Master Sgt. Al Cam-pos, a loadmaster with the 68th AS,was with the first crew out.

“We were originally sent to El Pasoso the C-5 could take shelter from thestorm, then rerouted to Altus Air ForceBase, Okla. and then to Beaumont foran airlift,” said Sergeant Campos. “Wetook folks out of Beaumont, but firstbrought in 32 members of the 433rd

In Beaumont, the crew implementedemergency airlift operation procedures,

Floor loading is for extreme circum-stances. Passengers sit on the cargofloor in rows and the loadmasterssafety belt them to the floor with cargostraps. Before Hurricane Katrina, floorloading was last used 38 years agoduring the Vietnam War. It is consid-ered a risky procedure and used foremergency evacuations only.

“You just can’t imagine 500 passen-gers on the floor of the C-5,” SergeantCampos said, shaking his head. “Icouldn’t visualize it until we actuallydid it because I’m so used to seeingcargo down there.”

At some point during the evacua-tions, each crewmember took a turnhelping passengers adjust to thesituation, in many cases, offering ashoulder to cry or lean on.

“I would look into their eyes – theyhad a stare I’ll never forget,” SergeantCampos said. “Was it shock? Was itwhat they left behind? I don’t know.All I know is that we were helping afellow American out. It’s all we coulddo.”

When one young woman could notstop crying, Sergeant Campos told herhe would not leave her. He sat next toher, on the floor, the entire flight.

“The obstacles that we overcamewere getting in the proper materialsand finding the man hours to allocateto the project because of funding andthe heavy workload maintenance has,”Sergeant Johnson said.

Now, ... technicians can free upboth of their hands to the work withouthaving to brace themselves against theengine,” said Sergeant Alsip.

“The next step for us is to do ademonstration for the safety office andthe quality assurance office. Thenwe’ll perform operational risk man-

“We are the first AFRC unit to havean FTU like this,” said Col. McMahon. The construction team still expectsproject completion about September2006 and student and instructoroccupancy will begin January 2007.

Since breaking ground in June, theC-5 Formal Training Unit is 12-percent complete and growing.Around the construction areas,

traffic is rerouted and reservists mustshare the road with contract, construc-tion vehicles.

“The current hustle and bustle willsoon intensify,” said Mr. Scott Hanson,433rd Airlift Wing project manager.“The MXG (Maintenance Group) andOG (Operations Group) are alsobeginning to actively recruit for civilianand ART (Air Reserve Technician)positions.”

The schoolhouse plan has alwaysincluded four buildings, and the con-struction team received the notice toproceed last month for the second oftwo buildings that will be part of theFTU. A Training Load AssemblyFacility will rise in the present marshal-ling yard near Building 909 and an

The TLAF will encompass anestimated 10,000 square-feet and willcost about $2.5 million. This facility isdesigned to support the LoadmasterInitial Qualification Course. Aerialporters added to the 433rd OperationSupport Squadron will operate thisfacility. Loadmasters will learn to loadand secure pallets produced there androlling stock.

The addition to Building 826 spansabout 6,500 square-feet at an approxi-mate cost of $1.8 million. This buildingproject will include reorganization andremolding of existing facilities. Itspurpose is to house some of the addedmaintenance manning.

“There are some unique challengesassociated with this project,” said Lt.Col. Frederick McMahon, 433rd

“I believe people don’t seek out helpdue to embarrassment or a vulnerabil-ity of being labeled as someone who isweak or unstable,” said Ms. Gonzales.

But isolating because of whatsomeone might say is another false-hood that keeps people from seekingthe tools they need to get throughtough times.

Mr. Pullen also stated most suicidesare committed by people who feeloverwhelmed and without control overtheir own life and causing their owndeath is the only control they have left.

“The fact is, we are all falliblehuman beings,” said Mr. Pullen. “Weall make mistakes.”

Mistakes are not permanent.“You can learn from your mistakes

and improve and try to make thingsbetter for yourself in the future,” saidMr. Pullen.

Even with all the best tools, no oneis responsible for someone else’sdecision to end their own life.

“It may not be what the callerwanted (to hear), but if the otherperson really wanted to die, then theywould have found a way somehow,”said Mr. Pullen. “It is irrational toblame ourselves for other people’sbehavior just as it is irrational to blameother people for how we feel.”

When it comes to the allimportant step of actuallystopping someone from

taking their own life, it is people caringabout each other who make thebiggest difference.

“People need two things, securityand significance,” said Chaplain LyleVon Seggern, 433rd Airlift Wingchaplain. “When a supervisor knowsabout us and cares about us, that givesus security and significance.”

The source of security and signifi-cance is not limited to supervisors.Everyone in the wing can meet thoseneeds in the people they work with.

“It’s something I call the principle ofidentification,” said Chaplain VonSeggern. “As we ID closer and closerin groups, hopefully we will knowmore, care more and thus be a properwingman for those who we servewith.”

“Through listening and being in themoment it helped …..(they were able)to see the problem clearer through anoutsider and to even figure out av-enues they had to initiate to overcomethe problem,” said Ms. Gonzales aboutone instance where she worked with aclient.

“There is a quote that states, ‘Thepast is just a memory the future is justa dream. The only thing that is real ishere and now.’ I ask, ‘How do youfeel right now? Are you safe are youOK?” said Mr. Pullen.

Dealing with one issue at a time andusing the right tool for the job iscommon sense. Awareness of how todeal with life stresses is also important.Suicide looks like the only answer tosomeone who sees no way out of adesperate situation. But that is nottruth. Seeing the truth about a situationis difficult when it gets tough. Every-one needs personal stress relief toolsand a way to stay focused on truth.For some, the focus comes from faith,for others it comes from close relation-ships.

“The principle I fall back on is knowthe truth, believe the truth and live thetruth,” said Chaplain Von Seggern.“That’s how I recover (from life’s hardtimes). For me, that truth is a personand his name is Jesus Christ.”

“Having a confidant I can sharewhat I am going through with, worksbest for me,” said Ms. Gonzales.

Another fact about life and suicideis not every problem can be handled bysimple conversations and not everyonehas faith or a trusted friend. Some-times the solution is medication,counseling or education. And some-times those things come from a thirdparty.

“The chaplain section and FamilySupport rely on each other’s strengthsto help our members get throughdifficult times and with the help of ourcommunity we can provide profes-sional assistance, if need be, throughMilitary One Source counselingnetwork,” said Ms. Gonzales.

Not everyone is able to open upabout what they are facing.

Suicide was the 11th leading cause ofdeath in the United States.

It was the eighth leading cause ofdeath for males, and 19th leading causeof death for females.

The total number of suicide deathswas 30,622.

Average of 1 person every 17.2minutes completes suicide.

Suicides outnumbered homicides(20,308) by three to two.

The wing’s HispanicHeritage Committeeawarded two $500 scholarships

to two deserving 433rd Airlift Wingmembers at the centerpiece event ofthe committee’s 2006 observance ofHispanic Heritage Month.

Wing participation in such events asthe Avenida Guadalupe parade, SundayCatholic Mass at San FernandoCathedral and the scholarship awardsluncheon are among the traditionsestablished by the wing’s HHCcommittee.

Now an annual autumnal fixture onthe city’s West Side, the AvenidaGuadalupe parade anticipates Diez ySeis de Septiembre (Sept. 16), the daythat marks the start of Mexico’s warfor independence against Spain.

433rd AW commander, Col. JohnFobian, rode in a vintage Corvette atthis year’s parade. 433rd troops alsovolunteered to march in the parade.

The traditional Sunday Mass at SanFernando Cathedral featured ChiefMaster Sgt. Gilbert Cuellar, who readthe service’s Scripture in Spanish.

WASHINGTON — Troops wouldsee a 3.1 percent pay raise under the$445 billion defense budget passed bythe Senate for fiscal 2006 on Friday.

Senators also added $50 billion morefor the war on terror, including $120million for ballistic protection add-onsfor vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan.
