President’s Report
Alamo ASHRAE,
Trick-or- treating has come and gone. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. And, we’ve finally had a couple cool fronts. Happy November.
Earlier this month, we held our 6th annual Fall Clay Shoot fundraiser. Our Research Promotion (RP) Chair, Brad Gilbert, lead event coordination and a team of several volunteers. The weather cooperated, and the event included some great food, music, and prizes as well. We want to thank all of our sponsors, donors, and everyone who was able to attend for making the event such a huge success.
Over the past few year’s our Clay Shoot, along with our Spring Golf Tournament, have raised considerable funds. Some of these funds have been used to offer local engineering students scholarships, and to hold events engaging students in the HVAC&R industry.
Last year an endowment was setup through ASHRAE society. The endowment will provide our chapter ongoing annual funds for engineering scholarships. This year, we will also offer the top student scholarship winner the chance to attend the ASHRAE Winter Conference, covering travel and registration fees.

Volunteerism!
Here are some ways to get involved:
• Volunteer at the San Antonio Food Bank! We are going as a group December 15 from 1:30-4. Our volunteer time includes a tour of the facilities. See the flyer section for details.
• Do you have access to a facility with interesting engineering? If so, consider hosting a student tour. Email John Delgado if you are interested in helping: [email protected]

A scholarship winner will be selected later this month, and presented during our January meeting. Since 2013, Alamo ASHRAE Chapter has issued over $10,000 in scholarships to local engineering students.
This month we will have a different meeting format and location. We will be meeting downtown at the BBQ restaurant, Smoke. There will be a presentation given by Brandt, and include an after lunch tour of the expanded Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The city invested over $325 Million in the facility, increasing exhibit space to 514,000 square feet.
I would also like to call attention to the two open officer positions. If you are a member of ASHRAE and the Alamo chapter, consider volunteering for one of these positions. If you would like to be considered, reach out to any of our current volunteers.
Best Regards,
Chris Delgado, PE
Thanksgiving Heat Transfer Your favorite physics discipline to the rescue!
Light meat cooks faster than dark meat. Checkout the link below for the juicy heat transfer details. Two suggestions from chefs to compensate:
1) Alternate cooking the turkey closer to one side of the oven and then the other to increase transfer to the legs.
2)Apply ice packs to the breast meat too cool it down faster once the bird is removed from the oven.

ASHRAE Design Guide For Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS)
Thinking about installing a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS)?
A DOAS uses separate equipment to condition all of the outdoor air brought into a building for ventilation and delivers it to each occupied space, either directly or in conjunction with local or central HVAC units serving those same spaces. A DOAS system (1) improves humidity control, (2) reduces energy use, (3) simplifies ventilation design and control, (4) uses heating and cooling equipment that doesn't provide ventilation and/or dehumidification (e.g., radiant panels or passive chilled beams), and (5) reduces installation cost. Comprehensive guidance from industry experts can simplify DOAS design, installation, operation, and management. DOAS is growing in popularity, but is still a relatively new technology. The lack of DOAS exposure and experience means many systems designed and installed today don't take full advantage of all the benefits DOAS can offer. ASHRAE Design Guide for Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems consolidates existing material to focus on the major issues while referring to supplemental sources for more specialized or in-depth information.
152 pages / 2017 / $69 ($59 ASHRAE Member)
Guided by the information in this book, HVAC system designers will be able to optimally incorporate DOAS into their projects. Architectural designers, building developers and owners, maintenance professionals, students, teachers, and researchers may also find the contents useful.
