Iodine, a powerful disinfectant for over 100 years, is further enhanced by AIS’s technology to maximise its superior performance. As a result, the AIS system uses very low dosages of iodine (5ppm to 30ppm) to achieve outstanding kill rates on fungi, bacteria and viruses.
Iodine - a dark, dense, crystalline solid (4.96 g/ml) at room temperature - slowly dissolves in water to form a concentrated solution, in equilibrium with its crystallised form, of about 250 ppm (0.25g/litre). The AIS system uses specially manufactured iodine, BioMaxA®, which dissolves up to four times faster than regular iodine.

> Iodine vs chlorine – whyAIS delivers the mostpowerful biocide: Activekilling agent: Chlorine insolution converts to twocompounds: HypochlorousAcid (HOCl) and Hypochlorite(OCl-).
HOCl is biocidal and willremain in solution only atpH above 6.5, (Below this pH,HOCl breaks downand will gas off quicklyout of solution.)
In contrast, iodine breaksdown into four principalcompounds: Iodine (I2),Hypoiodious Acid (HIO), Tri-iodide (I3-) and Iodate (IO3-).Both I2 and HIO are strongbiocidal agents. I3- andIO3- are only present in verylow concentrations and onlysignificant at very high pH;greater than 8.5.
> Effect of pH: To maximisethe concentration of therequired HOCl chlorinecompound, the wash watermust be maintained withina narrow pH range (6.5 to7.5). However, the naturalchemical consequence ofadding chlorine to water is toalter the pH level, dramaticallyaffecting biocidal action. Ata pH of 8.0, the active HOClhas dropped to only 25%of its level at pH 6.5. Thislevel is also less than 30%
as effective as iodine at thesame pH. In addition, chlorinereacts three times fasterthan iodine with proteins.The effect of this reactivity isto substantially and quicklyreduce the effective biocidalaction of chlorine in solutionswith a high organic load.
The active iodinecompounds, I2 and HIO,remain effective at muchhigher concentrations over amuch wider pH range (pH 3.0to pH 8.5).
> Measuring iodine: AIS’spurpose-built, iodine-specificelectrode shows the readingreceived from the iodine inthe solution as an mV chart.Due to the unique propertiesof iodine, the AIS systemcan monitor, record, controland adjust the active iodinein solution in real time andat ppm rates from 0.5ppmto 50ppm. This ability toso accurately control theactive biocidal ingredient isin stark contrast to chlorinewhich cannot be accuratelycontrolled automaticallyat any concentration above8ppm.
> Trihalomethanes:Governments andenvironmental agenciesglobally regulate themaximum level oftrihalomethanes (THMs)
- cancer-causing chlorineby-products - allowed inwastewater. They are nowrestricting the release ofchlorinated wash water intothe environment to preventfurther contamination.Treatment of chlorinatedwater to remove THMs is anexpensive exercise.
By comparison, iodine asused in the AIS system doesnot produce undesirableby-products or THMs eitheron the produce or in thewash water.
> Iodine and minimisingcorrosion: The corrosioneffect of chlorine isdramatically greater thanthe iodine delivered in theAIS system for the followingprincipal reasons:
> Due to the difference inboth oxidation potentialand atomic weight betweenchlorine and iodine, thecorrosion effect of chlorine ismore than seven times that ofiodine;
> As shown above, thedosages of iodine necessaryto be as effective or moreeffective than chlorine arebetween five to ten times lessthan chlorine. So, not only isthe iodine significantly lesscorrosive, but the dosagespresent are also less.
Once installed, the AIS
system will result insignificantly longer equipmentlife, leading to substantialcapital equipment costsavings.
