With the ability to receive the boarding pass in different media from self-check terminal, check-in desk, smart phone or home printing it is necessary to check the validity of the document and compare the capture data to the Flight Information system. This confirms the boarding pass is valid and the pas-senger is entitled to proceed through security to the airside departure lounge.

The gates can additionally be fitted with biometric capture devices to increase the verification level checking the travellers ID to the boarding pass presented. This data can then be transferred to the boarding process procedure ensuring the correct traveller has boarded the flight.

When it comes to boarding, airlines are faced with a major challenge. Modern aircraft are getting larger and the number of passengers is increasing, yet turnaround times remain the same. The requirement is that boarding must get quicker, but the answer is not to simply add additional ground staff, as this will increase operating overheads.

The Gunnebo BoardSec accelerates the complete boarding process. The gate makes the boarding process smoother for the passenger and simpler for ground staff. Scanners for machine readable docu-ments (MRTD’s) and e-ticket readers are integrated into the gates. Here the passenger boarding card data is automatically checked against the Airlines Departure manifest providing advanced passenger information (API) and passenger profiling.

Security can also be increased with the addition of biometric technology to ensure the passenger corresponds to their travel documentation.

Border control is one of the most security-sensitive areas in an airport. It requires accurate identification of incoming passengers which is often time-consuming.

Gunnebo’s ImmSec immigration gate is an automated solution that speeds up the whole process, while ensuring that only one person is allowed entry per authorised passage.

Depending on government legislation, ImmSec can be integrated with readers for smart ID cards, MRTDs and RFID passports, as well as biometric capture technology (see opposite page).

BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION

What is 'Biometrics'?Biometrics is the science of measuring and analysing biological data. These are the most common methods used today:

Iris Scanning Maps the intricate patterns of the eye's iris

Finger Scanning Analyses the vein structure of a finger

Fingerprint Scanning Reads the unique patterns and ridges in a fingerprint

Facial Recognition Creates a map using many facial landmarks, such as the distance between the eyes or the width of the nose

Finding a Solution to MatchA truly automated immigration system can only be implemented in countries that have introduced a passport or ID card containing biometric data. Not only is biometric data not used by every country, but those that do use it, do not necessarily use the same type.

Until there is an international accepted standard for using biometric data, Gunnebo immigration gates can be integrated with whichever biometric technology is necessary, be it face recognition, iris scanners or fingerprint readers.

PasSecPassenger flow control from airside to landside

The PasSec has been designed to allow free passage and is usually situated between Immigration and Baggage Reclaim to detect and prevent passengers returning or passing from the low security area back into a higher security zone.

Equipped with arrays of sophisticated sensors used to detect presence and direction of passage. With additional sensors, left items and thrown back objects can also be detected, both of which could represent a security threat. Since speed and simplicity of movement are critical the gates are designed to be fully automatic demanding no interaction with

the passenger and are built to deal with high passenger throughput.
