indiA. Economic liberalisation and developmenthas been, and continues to be, the largest single

actor contributing to the growth o the secu-rity systems industry, with the alling prices o electronic systems worldwide coming in a closesecond. According to a report by InternationalFire and Security Exhibition and Con erence(IFSEC), the value o the Indian physical securitymarket is likely to grow to 2.5 billion and itis expected to increase up to 30% year on year.Frost & Sullivan pegs the market or securityand surveillance equipment in India at 285mand the video surveillance market at 137m,both o which have a compounded annualgrowth rate o 2530%.

National ExpansionThe major actor contributing to the growth inIndia is the hostility being expressed by someseparatist orces and internal insurgents. Com-pared to the prohibitive 250% Import Customs

Duty o the 80s, the current rate o 35% is alsobeing considered as a growth driver or the in-dustry. Rapid growth in sectors such as telecoms, ports, airports, aviation, railways, roads, energy, construction and retail, coupled with the infuxo multinational companies also contributed to alarge extent. Furthermore, increased governmentallocations to modernise police services witnes-sed the recent setting up o city surveillanceprojects in almost all the metropolitan areas.

Crime on the RiseWhen it comes to running a business or com-mercial establishment, security is not given theattention it deserves. No one imagines that theyare working or a target or crime but statistics

show that it is becoming the case rom thesmallest stores to the largest retail chains.

Despite the recent increase in the crime ratesor burglary and the t, these can be reduced by

having appropriate security systems or businessand commercial establishments.

Security Not PrioritisedSecurity is now a management issue youcannot run a business without it. Commercialsecurity systems have an important economicimpact on several levels. Security needs tomonitor not only outside break-ins but also rehazards, smoke hazards, unauthorised access tosecure areas and petty the t rom o ce supplies,

    or example.

We have grown up in a society where concernor security has not been given top priority. We

tend to believe that being robbed will neverhappen to us. We consider what we hear onTV and read in the newspapers to be merestatistics. But becoming a victim o burglary

can happen to anyone. As well as having onespossessions stolen, ones sense o security isalso taken away.

Risks Poorly AssessedThe decision to provide security is o ten based

on the perceived threat to an installation, thearea where it is located and the type o industry.

In addition, many people avoid installing secu-rity systems because they either do not see it asa necessity or deem it to be too expensive.

The act is that approximately 97 000 peoplebecome victims o burglary every day and that ahome without a security system is three timesmore likely to be broken into. The phrase preven-tion is better than cure holds true in this case.

Saumyajit Gangopadhyay is Vice President or Bank Security & Secure Storage at Gunnebo India. Here he looks at the security market in India and gives us his views on how security risks are perceived inthe country both on a corporate level and by the general public.

indiA. The secure storage solutions recently installedby Gunnebo met the guidelines required by the RBIwhich was one o the main reasons or choosing se-curity products rom Gunnebo, says Sudhir Kulkarni,AGM, IDBI.

As a banking company, IDBI expects high quality, premium service, on-time delivery and zero down-

making its customers eel sa e in the knowledge thatthey can trust that their valuables are being kept ina sa e place.

We want to make our premises sa er. In the uturewe will look at adopting new technology and im-plementing the latest security upgrades an areawhere we are hoping Gunnebo can guide us, addsKulkarni.

Security standards are another important consid-eration according to IDBI.

They help us to generate con dence rom ourcustomers. Standards should be updated in line withsecurity needs and should be ollowed religiously,Kulkarni concludes.

IDBI Bank is a public sector bank in India. This means they have to ollow security mandatesstipulated by the Reserve Bank o India (Central Bank). Lately the bank has deployed strongroomdoors, lockers and other security equipment in all their premises and branches.

    Security that Creates Value

The terror attacks in Mumbaithree years ago made themanagement at the Essar Groupput extra thought into securityissues. Top o the agenda wasentrance control.

indiA. In the past the Essar Grouphad a relaxed approach to security

and managed with limited securityguards stationed across its acility. But when the building was expand-ed, one major concern was how toensure that access across the sitewas properly controlled.

We needed something ool-proo , says Basil Keelor, GroupHead Administration at EssarGroup. We ocused speci cally

on high-speed entrance gates andglass turnstile gates, and we werevery satis ed with the solutionswhich were installed.

When we looked around In-dia or security providers, Keelorcontinues, We were le t with twochoices Gunnebo and a competi-tor. We saw that Gunnebos qualitywas very high and that the eed-back we received rom other userswas better than the eedback orthe competitor. So the choice wasGunnebo.

Upgrading security to incorpo-rate the latest technologies is alsoan important actor or Essar. As agroup, Essar is constantly looking todeploy the most up-to-date equip-ment to ensure better security andproductivity.

I anything needs to improve,Keelor believes that there shouldbe more training in the physicalsecurity sector to make sure that aneducated security orce is in place

or the uture. As a dynamic company with

    diverse business interests, secu-

I have such good experience o Sa ePay that Imusing that system anyway, says Knut.

Be ore he installed Sa ePay there was an averageo one robbery a year at each store.

But since I bought Sa ePay two years ago wehavent had a single robbery. O course service to thecustomers is important, but sta sa ety comes rst.

Entrepreneur Knut thinks the automatic closedcash handling system is good value or money, par-ticularly as it is so easy to use.Sa ePay is easier to use than competing products.

For example theres only one eeding slot in thebanknote unit, and all coins can be thrown in at thesame time. Customers dont have to eed them inone at a time, he explains. The high security o a completely closed system isanother actor that Knut rates highly.

With Sa ePay the money goes securely straightinto the sa e, and we only have to empty the systemonce a week.

stations and other shops increasedsharply or a couple o years, butthere has been a marked decrease

in recent years. Comparing guresor the rst six months o 2010 and

2009, there is a 34% decrease inthe number o robberies at sta edservice stations.

Statoil runs about one-third o Denmarks lling stations. Its PR &Communication Director Per Brinchsays in an interview with Danishretail weekly Dansk Handelsbladthat installation o the Sa ePay cashhandling system and improved gen-eral security at the stations are thereasons behind the positive trend.

In the past, 60 per cent o rob-beries at our stations were in thecities o Copenhagen, Odense andAarhus. Thats why we installedSa ePay there rst. And it worked! In 2009, only three out o 22 rob-beries at Statoil were carried out inthese cities, he says.

So the problem shi ted rom thecities to smaller locations whereSa ePay had not yet been installed. But now all the stations have thesmart, secure system or using cashin stores.

creased considerably. The companycarried out a risk assessment and,a ter introducing various securitymeasures, they too have ar ewervisits rom criminals than be ore.Security pays or itsel .

JAKArTA.At the Gunnebo actory in Jakarta, whereevery week 500 sa es and ten vault doors are beingproduces and shipped out, the Kaizen philosophy isinspiring and driving colleagues to continually strivetowards improvements.

Over 300 people are working at the plant and orthe past one and a hal years the philosophy hasbeen a key ingredient in creating a success ul busi-ness. The mind-set helps all employees eel valuedsince each persons initiative is important, and everylittle improvement counts.

A New Way o ThinkingTwenty colleagues working on the actory foor areappointed to conduct a Kaizen training every quarterin order to introduce everyone to the philosophy.

Our approach to Kaizen is to ocus on the smallimprovements, where suggestions come rom peopleworking directly in production, says Bogi W Jatmiko,Production Manager at the Jakarta plant. So ar we have made many improvements. For ex-ample have we installed automatic sensor stoppers

on the bending machines, eliminating the risk o de ective corners on sa es and we have made specialracks or storage o parts.

Everyone Has a SayThe Kaizen initiative is managed by a committee,

where representatives rom all areas o responsibili-ties in the actory are being represented. Every ourmonths the Kaizen board gathers and evaluatesincoming suggestions. The outcome is ve areas o improvement that will be in ocus over the coming

our months. It is important to highlight that the proposed

actions should come rom the actory foor, not rommanagement or anywhere else. As an incentive, wehave a reward system and we have three people inthe Kaizen board responsible or publication o theagreed actions and appraisal or the person whocame up with the idea, says Bogi W Jatmiko.

Do it better, make it better, and improve it, even i it isnt broken i we dont, we cantcompete with those who do. This is the very simple, but power ul message behind theKaizen philosophy.

During the rst hal o the year the entrancewas completely open, with uni ormed guardsoccasionally watching the entrance. Buteventually the solution became untenable becausethe ts, particularly o convenience ood close to theentrance, increased sharply.

Ulrika Andersson is Manager o the Coop Extrastore on Medborgarplatsen square in Stockholm, ashop that has 65 employees and long opening hours.

When the entrance was unsupervised, individualso ten took the liberty o picking up a lunch portionand walking out o the shop without paying. I dontthink the perpetrators really thought o this as the tas the exit was open, she says.

The Coop Extra store had already installedGunnebos solution or closed cash handling Sa ePay. During the project the supermarketchains central administration recommended theSpeedGates entrance control solution or CoopExtras problem.

Conventional store gates wouldnt o er the secu-rity the store needed. Two pairs o SpeedGates and a

ull-height GlasStile or bulky goods were there oreincorporated into the store design.

No sooner said than done. The store now has twoSpeedGates with high glass panels and a ull-height

GlasStile, which stop thieves exiting the store with-out passing the checkout. The entrance solution hasbeen customised in Coop Extras red colour.

In addition to stopping thieves, Ulrika can seeother bene ts with the installation.

In the past customers could witness the ts, whichled to agitation. Now the situation is completelydi erent. I also think the entrance solution is veryattractive and looks inviting, which is a bonus as the

ocus was obviously on security, she says.

We install all types o Gunnebo solutions, rom the simplest to the most technologically

advanced, says Dariusz Wesoowski, one o thePolish technicians.

In June 2008 Gunnebo supplied over 1 000sa es to 128 o ces in 125 di erent countriesall over the world. Thanks to e cient work o the Polish team o technicians, the project wasa huge success. Their hard work meant installa-tion was completed in just 18 months.

During 2009-2010 three teams carried outsecurity installations such as entrance control,CCTV, intrusion detection and re detection incountries like Azerbaijan, Cameroon, Canada,Indonesia, Israel, Mauretania, Morocco, SaudiArabia and USA.

To carry out a complete installation at ascheduled time is a complicated operation butthe main goal or the team is always customer

ocus and customer satis action, says HenrykTrz sowski, Service Technician.

Executing these types o installations requiresexperience, good planning and the ability todeal with unexpected problems. One installa-tion in Saudi Arabia is a good example o this.

Weather conditions did not make installa-tion easy. Temperatures were as high as 49C

We ex-pect our partner to be highly resource ul whenit comes to the challenge o ever-improvingsecurityand we have no doubts Gunnebo willbe up to the task.

The number o opportunistic the ts is cur-rently down thanks to the implementation o prevention tools. TNT operates its own controlcentre on an around-the-clock basis with 54sta employed on security assignments all

ully internalised and reliant on CCTV, remotesurveillance, intrusion detection, entrance con-trol and satellite tracking.

However, we have recently experienced a risein the number o attacks rom organized crimi-nalswith increasing violence against our em-ployees. This is partly linked to the international

nancial crisis and the prospect o such crimesto stop is unlikely, says Jacques Richards.

Involving all members o sta at all levels isa key objective o our security policy, adds Rich-ards. This includes a speci c Security Guide-book which is handed out to all employees, security awareness training and regular updatesto managers listing all potential threats.

In order to optimise its security policy, TNT France decided to centralise all its securityresources. As part o this action plan, Gunnebo will install, expand and maintain the CCTV,entrance control and intrusion detection systems at all TNT sites across France.

The answer is short and sweet: just make people literate. I wouldspend the money on educating thepeople and making them aware o the importance and need o secu-rity in their personal li e as well as

or the security o the nation.

I would start by developing asmart phone application that candetect blood alcohol levels. Whena phone user wants to drive his/her vehicle but has a blood alco-hol level exceeding the permittedthreshold, then this applicationwill automatically transmit a signalto the vehicle so that the enginewill not start. This applicationshould be made available ( ree
