AIM: What is an ecosystem?

Examine the next Six Slides

What do they all have in common

How would you define the word “population” ?

All of the same type of organism living in a certain

place

…A homogeneous group…

What are two ways a population may increase in size?

•More births than deaths

•Immigration

What are two ways a population may decrease in size?

•More deaths than births

•Emmigration

How would an ecologist describe the picture on the left?

Organism Population

Look at the next two slides

What is the difference between

Picture A

And Picture B

Picture A

Picture B

What is the difference between

Picture A

And Picture B

How would you define the word “Community” ?

Which picture represents a community “A” or “B”

Why

DEFINITON:

A community is made up of ALL the populations that live in

a certain place.

…a heterogeneous group…

Example:

In a forest, what might be some of the differing

populations ?

Which is larger:

A community or a population?

Important Note:

A community is all the populations living in an area

and not the area itself!

Question:

Do members of different populations in the same community interact with one

another?

How? List Example?

Question:

Are all of these interactions deliberate and intentional (ex: lion eats zebra) …

or

Are some of the interactions indirectly related without any deliberate interaction

Example

Where does a bee get food?

Is that direct or indirect?

Do you think the bee said: “gee, I got go over there and pollinate those flowers?”

That’s an indirect relationship.

Interactions

• DIRECT• Predator-Prey• Herbivores eating

plants• Bee gathering

nectar

• INDIRECT• The nitrogen of

“poopy” which helps the soil

• Scavengers• Bees pollinating

flowers

Analyze this next picture

What do you see in this picture?

Is everything living in this picture?

Do the populations of this community interact?

Do the populations of this community only interact with

living things?

All the living things and nonliving things, in an

environment, combined together with their interactions

defines an ecosystem

An Ecosystem is a self supporting unit

What does that mean?

An Ecosystem must have four characteristics!

1. Source of energy (99% of the time it is the sun. (There are some exceptions!)

2. Transfer of energy. One population using another as food which transfers the energy.

An Ecosystem must have four characteristics!

3. Breakdown of materials: Decomposition to raw materials and minerals

4. Materials and minerals are recycled to be used over and over again. (Including water!)

immigration & immigration & emigrationemigration

• Do population always live in the same place?

• Sometimes they emigrate from their current home

• Or, they immigrate to a new environment
