SUMMERTIME PROGRAMS
FINDING THE RIGHT SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR CHILD
Here is a list of summer camps offered in the area. You may also want to check out your
local child care centers, your city’s recreation department, the local YMCA, Boys and Girls
Clubs, listings in free parenting magazines, or call our nonprofit organiziation Contra Costa
Child Care Council at (925) 676-5442 for FREE referrals to local family child care homes
and centers that will offer child care and enrichment activities over the summer months.
The Child Care Council shares this list to give you ideas (these are referrals and NOT
recommendations). We believe that parents are the best judges of what type of camp is
appropriate and enriching for their children.
Summer is a perfect time to discover new experiences that can improve your child’s
self-esteem and sense of responsibility.
To find the right program, you should talk to your child first and find out what he or she is
interested in. Once you have decided on the camp, ask questions about physical and
emotional safety. Remember summer should be fun. Ask how the staff will handle
separation anxiety, teasing, or fighting.
Here are some topics for discussion with prospective camps:
Philosophy What is the philosophy and values of the program (cooperation vs. competition)?
How is discipline handled ? If your child has problems in a specific area, will the
staff be able to deal with this on a caring and individual basis ?
Will you be able to have a progress report or conference with the counselor during
the summer ?
Flexibility Is it possible to change counselors, if it’s not a good match ?
Program Size and Qualifications How many children are in the camp?
How many children are in your child’s group ? What are their ages ?
What are the qualifications of the Director and staff ?
Transportation and Activities
Are there buses? Who drives them ?
Where are the children picked up / dropped off ?
Describe a typical week. Is there a written schedule ?
Is one activity emphasized? Are children allowed to choose activities ?
Is the day spent in a home, park camp headquarters, or moving around a city ?
