HAMPTON | LauraBullard never thought shecould raise $2,200.

But she has already sur-passed her monetary goal, walked herself to betterhealth and taught her twochildren about charity in theprocess.

On August 4, Bullard willjoin other women and menas they walk in the BreastCancer 3-Day event. Begin-ning in Framingham, MA,the three-day-long, 60 mile-long walk will benefit theSusan S. Komen Breast Can-cer Foundation and theNational PhilanthropicTrust’s Breast Cancer Fundwhich supports breast cancer“research, treatment, preven-tion and education.”

Eleven other Americancities will hold their ownwalks after the Boston-basedevent, ending with San Diegofrom November 11-13.

Bullard says she heardabout the walk on radio adsbut did not think about par-ticipating until a colleaguefrom Galley Hatch Cateringspoke about her own plans towalk in the 3-Day during aSt. Patrick’s Day party inMarch.

Bullard says she wasimmediately interested —her grandmother was a vic-tim of breast cancer, and shewanted to get in shape.

Though she wasn’t sureshe could raise the $2,200fundraising minimumrequired of all 3-Day partici-pants, Bullard decided to gofor it. She registered on theevent Web site and made apledge to raise the money.

“I told myself ‘You know,I need to get in shape so I canbe accountable for it [work-

‘Walkers’ team up to fight breast cancer

ing out] by participating inthe 3-Day,’” she says.

Bullard asked her friendAmanda Kittredge, also ofHampton, to join her on thewalk. Kittredge, whose moth-er is breast cancer survivor, signed up without hesitation. Two other Hampton womendecided to join Bullard andKittredge and together, theyformed their own team, the“Walkers for Knockers.”

Aside from her job at Gal-ley Hatch Catering, Bullardtutors, paints murals for chil-dren’s rooms and serves asan assistant T-ball coach.Despite her busy schedule, the mother of two finds timeto train. Four times eachweek, Bullard wakes up at 5a.m. and walks a five-mileroute. On Saturdays and Sun-days, she walks between 10and 14 miles each day.

Bullard says she alreadynotices the results of herwalking training.

“I have muscles in my

arms. I even run a little now. Iused to just walk when Iwent to the fridge for icecream,” she jokes.

Bullard’s next goal is heat-training.

“I get heatstroke and Iswell,” she says.

Walkers have alreadybeen warned about the likeli-hood of swelling during their60-mile journeys. Bullardsays that participants areexpected to bring three pairsof walking shoes to the event, including one pair a size anda half larger than their regu-lar size in order to accommo-date any inflammation of thefeet.

Though Bullard is delight-ed by her improved physicalfitness, she is even moreimpressed with the supportof her community. Family, friends, strangers and evenher daughter’s bus driverhave made donations toBullard’s cause.

“Everyone has a connec-

tion to breast cancer,” Bullardsays.

In addition to donations, the “Walkers For Knockers”raised money at a recent yardsale.

But Bullard has been par-ticularly touched by theenthusiasm of her six-year-old daughter, Lizzy. In addi-tion to offering her mother allof the change in her coin-bank, Lizzy designed anemblem for the “Walkers forKnockers” complete withpink ribbon (a symbol ofbreast cancer awareness),Earth, and a door. Lizzy toldBullard she drew the Earthbecause her mother wouldbe helping people from allover the world and she wasstudying it in school. As forthe door? It was Lizzy’sinterpretation of the word“knockers.”

Bullard says Lizzy is con-stantly asking about the walkand offering to help out.

“It’s been good for her tosee me do this,” Bullard says.

According to the NationalCancer Institute, breast can-cer is the “second-leadingcancer-related death inwomen” in the United States. To sponsor the “Walkers forKnockers” and their walk insupport of the fight againstbreast cancer, visitwww.the3day.org for moreinformation.
