Lesson 5: The Science of Aircraft Systems

4 different kinds of systems: Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Electrics, and Mechanical

Hydraulic Systems effectively transfer force over hundreds of feet of hydraulic line without any significant loss of energy. Hydraulic reservoirs contain non-compressible fluids that transfer force to systems throughout the airplane.

Pneumatics systems transmit force through the use of a compressible fluid. They are commonly on board aircraft to provide pressurization and actuation in hydraulic systems

Lesson 5 continued

Electrical systems often actuate many devices in the aircraft and power avionics, such as lighting, ignition, etc. Flying with this system is usually called “Flying by Wire”.

Mechanical systems are actuated through rods and pulleys directly connected to the cockpit.

Lesson 6 QuestionsWhich of the following is a member of the pitot-static family?A) Airspeed indicator B) Attitude indicator C) Magnetic compass

True or false? The attitude indicator receives its information from a gyroscope.True

True or false? The magnetic compass requires electricity from the aircraft electrical system to operate properly.

False The Tachometer...A) Displays the temperature of the engine exhaust B) Displays engine or crankshaft revolutions per minute.C) Displays altitude above sea level.
