ADVISORY BOARD OF DIRECTORS
PLAY WRITE ACHIEVE
It never gets old. Even after a decade of service, the thrill of hearing “when is SCORES starting” from
students and teachers fills me with joy, hopefulness, excitement and great responsibility.
Over the past 10 years the climate for kids living in urban Milwaukee has been challenging. Schools have
struggled to “meet expectations,” have restructured, or closed. Families have experienced the hardships of
a recession and high unemployment rates. Unable to make ends meet, nearly all MPS families qualify for
free or reduced price meals and thousands of children eat their three daily meals at school. Violence in the
city has reached unimaginable levels, and sadly children have been witnesses and victims.
More than ever, safe havens for children are out-of-school time programs. Proudly, SCORES has been that “safe haven” for
thousands of children. However, the demand to help improve the lives of children living in the city is still great. Excited and
willing to meet this need, SCORES has changed, renewed, and rejuvenated in order to best serve Milwaukee’s youth. Within
these pages you will discover that SCORES has utilized the unique framework of soccer, poetry and community service to
expand our footprint in the community.
Change. SCORES is no longer an organization that serves only 3rd-5th graders; SCORES programming now engages more than
1,200 from K4 through high school students. SCORES also operates year-round! We accomplished this by becoming a Lead
Agency (pg. 9), expanded our literacy and soccer programming to include 1st and 2nd graders; and introduced a summer soccer
league (pg. 8) in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. These changes have resulted in new
opportunities for children to spend their out-of-school time.
Renew. Meeting the needs of at-risk, underserved children means recognizing the barriers to life-long success and evaluating
how you can be a catalyst for kids to overcome those barriers. SCORES’ literacy and soccer program has proven time and again
that we affect change in health and academic outcomes. But is that enough? No. In fact, in order to best serve our children,
SCORES recognized the need to ensure programming is addressing the needs of the whole child. To this end, SCORES has
incorporated a social and emotional learning framework within all of our
curricula. Today you will find students engaged in activities in the classroom
and on the soccer field that challenge them to grow across five major
competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness,
relationship management, and responsible-decision-making (pg. 6-7).
Rejuvenate. New ideas, energy and a fresh look at the organization is key to
staying relevant. This year we added new staff, new partnerships, engaged
many college students as volunteer coaches (pg. 4) and added new Board
Members. Without the hundreds of hours these individuals donated to
SCORES, we would not have been able to accomplish what we did this year!
While I hope you'll take the time to peruse the remainder of this report, I’d
like to share with you one last antidote. This summer I received a message
from a SCORES alumni, it said, “Hey Coach Kate, it’s Jeffery from SCORES
2005. I heard there was an opportunity to work for SCORES, let me know if
that is possible.” It’s these little moments I realize the long-term impact
SCORES truly has on children. We look forward to working with Jeffery this
year, and enthusiastic and optimistic about the next 10 years!
Thank you for your continued support,
Kate Carpenter, Executive Director

4 America SCORES Milwaukee—2014-2015 Annual Report
Volunteers bring new energy and connect participants to positive role models
Corporate volunteers help in the classroom, on the soccer field, and with service projects
Each year SCORES relies on numerous community volunteers to help our organization run smoothly. Individuals, college
groups, and corporate teams visited schools and parks to work one-on-one with students, helping them spell their “feelings
words,” teaching them how to dribble a
soccer ball, hand- delivering donated
writing supplies and soccer equipment,
and distributing meals to both
participants and families who attend our annual Fall Frenzy! and year-end Jamboree! events. Over the past year, nearly 100
volunteers donated thousands of hours of their valuable time and talents in support of SCORES.
“Volunteers from UWM were committed to 12 hours of
service over one semester, but nearly all of them became so
engaged they continued the entire year.”
Founded in 2004, America SCORES Milwaukee is beginning to see more and more former participants as they continue their
education and their involvement in soccer in high school and beyond. Carlos, a participant from 2009-2011 was an engaged
SCORES participant who responded to a year-end survey question about what he would like to change about the program: “If
I could change one thing about SCORES, it would be that we could practice on a field with grass.” A fair request, as he and
hundreds of other participants each year are limited to their school’s gym or outdoor playgrounds which have little or no
green space. Even though Carlos’ elementary school had no grass to play on, he’s progressed as a soccer player and as an
underclassman. Carlos is a now a stand-out athlete playing on his school’s
varsity team which made it to the 2014 WIAA High School Boys State
Championships.
True to the SCORES model that programming is not just about soccer, but
also academics and volunteerism, Carlos responded to the question “What
do you like best about SCORES?” with: “I like that we can help our
community or neighborhood
because I like helping people.”

Frequently referred to as the “soccer program” at program sites, SCORES uses soccer
to gets kids excited about school, excited about being on a team, and excited to set
and accomplish goals. While youth also participate in writing workshops and service
projects with their writing coaches, soccer coaches are trained to teach the
fundamentals of soccer as well as life skills that are valuable on and off the field.

Bryan performs his poem about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the America SCORES National Poetry Slam! in New York City
Different than drop-in programs or “homework help,” SCORES writing sessions use curricula designed to teach
writing skills while introducing team building activities. Additionally, SCORES provides every participant numerous
opportunities to share work out loud including a local Poetry Slam! in which two participants are chosen to represent
Milwaukee on a national level in New York City each spring.
Thorough evaluation of programming shows that SCORES programs improve student’s confidence in both writing and
sharing their work aloud in front of peers.
SCORES participants work to revive the Story Garden in Milwaukee’s Burnham Park neighborhood
America SCORES Milwaukee—2014-2015 Annual Report 7
Through student-driven projects, participants were able to understand how they are a member of their community and
how they can work together to affect positive change. SCORES’ service-learning program gives children the opportunity
to address issues in their community that have personal relevance to them and encourages participants to understand
how their efforts affect underlying societal issues. This year’s projects focused on: community gardens*, youth and
family literacy*, increasing physical activity and nutritional eating to improve heart health, promoting summer safety
tips for 1st and 2nd graders, and efforts to comfort lost or traumatized children. *projects recognized by Mayor Barrett’s Peace Project

America SCORES Milwaukee partners with numerous organizations each year to
both expand as well as improve our services to youth residing in Milwaukee’s
urban neighborhoods. These partnerships are both large and small, engaging
entities such as Milwaukee Public Schools, or other Lead Agencies like Boys &
Girls Clubs, COA, Journey House, and Neu Life.
Working together to provide children with the best opportunities possible,
SCORES and its partners share staffing, run collaborative training sessions, and
utilize a cost-sharing model which are mutually beneficial.
Alternatively, smaller-scale partnerships are fostered by SCORES participants as
they research community issues for their service projects. As they begin to delve
deeper, teams reach out to organizations who are involved in the cause to both
gather information and discuss areas for partnership. Projects engaged Layton
Boulevard West Neighborhood, Milwaukee Police Department, Safe Kids
Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee Public Library (to name a few).
Steps to successful partnerships that lead to program growth, as well
as higher quality programs that positively impact youth:
America SCORES Milwaukee—2014-2015 Annual Report 9
During the 2014-2015 school year, America SCORES Milwaukee became an
approved Lead Agency through the Milwaukee Public School District. With this
designation, SCORES oversees all non-school operations at J.W. Riley Elementary
School. Specifically operating Community Learning Center (CLC) and Safe Place
programming, SCORES provides a support system that focuses on positive youth,
family and neighborhood development.
Our programs are staffed by caring adults with a commitment to providing a
healthy balance of learning and fun in a safe and supportive environment.
The programs we run are rich with interactive and hands-on learning activities.
All students participate in Homework Help, as well as one-on-one tutoring
Monday through Thursday. Students get assistance to reinforce key skills or build
on new concepts learned in class. On Fridays and various days throughout the
summer months participants take part in recreation activities or attend field trips
to the many educational and fun attractions throughout Greater Milwaukee.
Open from 6:30a.m. to 6:00p.m. for more than 250 days out of
the year, our site serves an average of 100+ youth each
day. By offering a safe place for their children, SCORES
helps parents focus on work, and worry less about the
whereabouts of their kids. This support
ultimately improves
family life.
THANK YOU for supporting America SCORES’ mission of inspiring urban youth to lead healthy lives,
