AdvancedTCA Telecom Frame Custom Product Design When a tier one network equipment provider wanted to optimize its carrier-grade common platform at the frame level, it approached the Solution Services team at the Embedded Computing business of Emerson Network Power (Emerson). “Our engineers became a virtual extension of the customer’s project team to develop a solution that pushed the boundaries of current technology,” said Jorge Magalhaes, vice president of marketing, Embedded Computing, Emerson Network Power. “The importance to our customers is the ability to combine the flexibility of customizing elements while fully leveraging the maximum from industry standards-based, off-the-shelf communications servers to ensure the most cost-effective solution, and a reduced total cost of ownership. Patent-pending power distribution and cable management systems that are setting new standards in the industry are just two examples of the technology innovations that are delivering business results to this customer.” CusTOmer requiremenTs The customer wanted to maximize the use of a 42U high telecom frame, which could house three AdvancedTCA ® (ATCA ® ) shelves plus a low-profile power distribution unit (PDU) and still have adequate space to fit thin servers or cabling patch panels. The frame-level implementation also needed to minimize the effort required for field upgrades and be capable of being retrofitted into legacy environments. Emerson initiated its collaborative engineering approach, providing project management resources to scope requirements and analyze needs. Using the latest virtual design tools to collaborate in real-time across multiple locations, our engineers worked in partnership with the customer’s team during frequent virtual design sessions. Components were modeled using 3D tools to accelerate design, visualize customer inputs, and enable rapid prototyping. innOvaTive Cable managemenT The frame was designed with vertical and horizontal cable management brackets to simplify cable routing between shelves, eliminate the need for cable ties, provide cable protection, and speed field upgrades. The frame can be delivered pre-wired for maximum configuration and to allow post-deployment enhance- ments that could include adding shelves with minimum or no down time.

PaTenT-Pending POwer disTribuTiOn uniTThe Emerson design team developed a flexible and low-profile power distribution unit (PDU) that is backwards-compatible. The universal PDU can mount in 19-inch, 23-inch, or 600 mm size frames. Modular PDU breakers have front access for easier installation, service, and removal in the field. Breakers are also designed for redundancy and are available in values ranging from 15 to 125 amps, which enables the reuse of the device in multiple applications. All these features enable the customer to make changes with minimal impact and downtime. The low profile of the PDU enabled the frame to house three shelves while still accommodating patch panels and thin servers.

reliabiliTy and availabiliTy analysis and TesTingEmerson also provided application porting services to help the customer integrate their application with standard software provided on Emerson’s Centellis™ ATCA telecom platforms. Emerson provided application benchmarking and validation to define, develop and execute end-to-end scenarios that exercised the customer’s application in similar situations to its intended use. Pre-defined parameters and data were collected and provided to the customer to improve decision-making.
