DescriptionThe Advanced Substation Design Workshop is prepared for engineers and designers familiar with substation design as well as more experienced engineers. This two-day workshop will cover fundamental building blocks of substation design with a focus on more advanced concepts. Topics will include grounding and raceway systems, shield-ing, control buildings and associated systems, protective relaying, equipment specifi-cations, SCADA and communications. The course is designed to provide instruction on best design practices and processes for those already familiar with substation design. Comparisons of design practices will be presented. Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of unique problems or issues they have encountered.

Who Should AttendAll distribution, transmission or management personnel involved with substations and substation design are encouraged to attend. This class is intended for those already familiar with substation design.

Continuing Education CertificatesAll attendees will receive a continuing education certificate worth 16.0 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) by RMEL, upon completion of the course. There will be 1.0 professional hour (PDH) given for attending the Member Roundtable. RMEL serves a large territory in which attendees participate in a number of accrediting organiza-tions, each with their own requirements. Depending on the certifying body you are

affiliated with, RMEL PDHs may be applied towards your recertification credit. It is the responsibility of the attendee to determine if the credits are applicable to their certifying body and how they may be applied. Use the event brochure, and agenda to determine how the content applies to your certification. The attendee is also responsible for verifying how the quantity of RMEL PDHs convert to your certifying body credits. Typically 1.0 PDH is equal to .1 CEU, but you should always verify the conversion scale.

Workshop InstructorTom Ghidossi, P.E., President/Principal Engineer, Exponential Engineering Company Mr. Ghidossi has more than 35 years of experience in the electric power industry including substation, distribution and transmission design; protective relaying; and, power system studies. He is the founder and President of Exponential Engineering Company, an electric power consulting engineering firm in business for more than 21 years. Mr. Ghidossi has a BSEE and MBA from the University of Colorado and is licensed as a professional electrical engineer in ten states.

Rick Lutz, P.E., Sr. Engineer, Exponential Engineering Company Mr. Lutz has been working in the industrial and power industry for 18 years. During this time he has designed substations, generation protection systems and indus-trial systems. Mr. Lutz has a BSEE from and an MSEE from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and is licensed as a professional electrical engineer in 21 states. He works as a senior engineer in the Wheat Ridge office for Exponential Engineering Company.

Donn Morris, P.E., Sr. Engineer, Exponential Engineering Company Mr. Morris has been working in the power industry for 15 years. During this time he has designed substations 12.47 through 345 kV for rural electric associations, IOU’s, wind farms, and generation plants. Mr. Morris has a BSEE and an MSEE from the University of Colorado and is licensed as a professional electrical engineer in several states. He provides design and analysis consulting to many of Exponential Engineering Company’s clients and man-ages the Wheat Ridge office.

BackgroundThis workshop is intended for those al-ready familiar with substation design, but who want to learn about more advanced concepts. The fundamental principles of substation design will be presented along with the more advanced concepts.
