I feel privileged and very pleased to extend a sincere welcome to all joining our friendly U3A here in the
Shoalhaven in this new year. On behalf of our existing members, I welcome especially, those joining us for the
first time.
Our new Website is now in operation, thanks to the hard work of our IT team, particularly Peter Eales. Copy
this address into your search engine; https://shoalhaven.u3anet.org.au then go to 'Activities Brochures' page.
The term 1 program offers a wide variety of activities and courses to stimulate your mind and keep you
moving, both at manageable cost.
In our dangerous and tragic climate, mitigated so selflessly by the volunteers and professionals of our
emergency services, who also use the latest technology to warn us of the constantly changing risks likely to
effect us, it makes sense for us to take up such technology. Our Technology workshops can assist you in
getting started and learning its effective use.
Given the drastic hit to our local tourism industry, perhaps we can help in a small way by dining out more
often than ususal, as well as donating to the relief efforts that are and will be necessary.
Watch for mid-term bulletins advising of additional activities arising during term; profiling course presenters
occasionally and reporting on existing and possible future courses.
Please let non-computer user members know of these bulletins where possible, so we can avoid incurring the
time and financial costs of snail-mail and spread our message further.
Let us know your ideas that you think could increase your enjoyment of our program.

HAMILTON HUME (1797 – 1873)
Hamilton Hume, a significant explorer of early Australia, was born near Parramatta
NSW. His family moved to a land grant at Appin in 1812. From the age of 12, he
began exploring the areas of Bong Bong, Berrima, Mittagong, Five Islands
[Illawarra] and the county of Argyle [Goulburn]. In 1824, Hume and William
Hovell led an expedition from Lake George [Canberra] to Geelong on Corio Bay in
Victoria, crossing the flooded Murrumbidgee River and discovering the Murray
River. Hume was an essential member of John Oxley’s 1827 expedition into
western NSW. In his 2016 book, author Robert Macklin describes Hume as ‘our
greatest explorer'.
AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION 1901
British colonies emerged on the continent of Australia throughout the nineteenth
century. Each was self-governing within the British Empire. Why did those same
colonies decide to federate and form one nation, a commonwealth? Sir Henry
Parkes, Premier of New South Wales and widely acknowledged as the ‘father of
federation’, was ably assisted by many others with the same passionate view for the
future of Britain’s colonies in Australia. A substantial issue was that of state rights
in the federation, still vigorously debated today. What legal and political processes
were used to encourage the Australian public and Queen Victoria to agree to the
unification of the states in the Australia as a Commonwealth of Australia?
FORENSICS Leader: Ken Jeffery
Ken, an experienced presenter and member of U3A Kiama, has generously offered
to present this term's course in the unavoidable absence of our usual presenter, Juan
Alvarez.
Ken brings a deep knowledge of this science which he will demonstrate in his talks
listed below by week;
W1. The OJ Simpson case in California and Graeme Thorne Case in Sydney.
W2. Ballistic evidence in the Belanglo State Forest Backpacker murders was
critical in convicting Ivan Milat.
W3. Canadian and UK cases (1 each) of Art fraud detected with use of
Forensic science .
W4. In 1991 some human remains were found in a bog outside Ekaterinburg
Russia. Were they the Romanov family remains of the last Tsar?
GIOTTO'S CHAPEL ART REVOLUTION Presenter: Patrick DeGabriele
In 1305 the great Italian master frescoed the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and
changed the face of European art forever. This humble son of a shepherd rose to
become the greatest of artists, and his introduction of humanity, realism and
movement into painting continues to influence the way we see the world. This
illustrated talk will focus on his masterpiece in its social and artistic context, and
attempt to explain why it’s still regarded as both important and very beautiful.

Each of us has a life’s journey from cradle to grave. We inherit a world in which
we grow up, play many roles and build a legacy in a changing world.
Staying alive requires maintaining health and responding to changing environments
constantly. Life involves biology, body, mind (imagination. meaning, purpose and
the greater good), experiences, choices, family and other relationships, learning,
work, play, needs, desires, emotions including love and compassion, community,
perceptions, concepts of self and more.
How do I know I am alive? Who am I? What happens when I die?

MAHJONG Leader: John Coghlan
WHY DO THIS COURSE?
Mahjong has long been popular with people in China and other Asian countries.
Now it is becoming a popular pastime all over the world. In addition to being a fun
way to pass the time and socialise, mahjong is also a great way to support healthy
aging. Mahjong keeps your mind sharp. It is a mentally stimulating game that
requires you to use multiple parts of your brain, with logic, risk-management, quick
decision-making, pattern recognition and problem solving.
If you have a mahjong set, please bring it along.
Royal National Park Coastal Walk
This time two years ago, I did a spontaneous walk in the Royal National Park. I
took 2 days to cover the 26km from Otford to Bundeena. I thought I'd show you
some of the highlights to encourage you to have a go too.
Tibet in 1984
I spent 3 months in China, travelling independently, including a month in Tibet and
was fortunate to get a permit to visit Lhasa. Through my photos, you will see that I
got a lot out of meeting the friendly Tibetans, seeing some of the beautiful
countryside (although rugged) and learning about some of their customs (spiritual).

Michael Curtiz.
Father Goose 118m 1964

as a beachcomber who is recruited to be a coastwatcher on a South Pacific island

hilarious battle of the sexes between a messy American, a prim mademoiselle and
seven mischievous little girl begins.

Morgan Freeman Michael Caine and Alan Arkin starred under Zach Braff's
direction in one of the best comedies of its year. Three pensioners; Willie, Joe and
Al team up as to buck retirement and step off the straight and narrow, having
become casualties of the corporate world. They risk everything by embarking on a
daring bid to knock off the very bank that hoodwinked them out of their money.
Going My Way 126m 1971
John is undergoing a medical refurb this term so
Dianne has agreed to look after our movie addicts.

HISTORY AT BERRY Leader: Lloyd Pitcher
ELIZABETH JESSICA [“JESSIE”] HICKMAN
“The Lady Bushranger” was born at Burraga NSW in 1890.
At the age of eight, her parents separated. Jessie was placed with Hyland’s Vice-
Regal Circus, a travelling horse show, at Burraga.
She later attained fame as a roughrider. After several brushes with the law, she had
a boy to Ben Hickman, who wanted to marry her and settle down. But Jessie
wanted a life in the Wollemi wilderness, near her brother in Kandos.
She built a small farm in the Widden Valley and kept a cave hideout on Nullo
Mountain. Jessie stole property, horses and cattle until her death from a brain
tumour in Muswellbrook NSW in 1936.

have 'walk-tested" (at a leisurely pace) the route and got to the club a little before
noon. MAX 20 Members.

PREHISTORY OF ART Leader: Peter Bindon
Archaeologists seem to discover new occurrences of cave art all around the world
with great regularity. This talk examines some of the most recent finds and
discusses the theories of the evolution of art in its various contexts. It looks at many
of the newest discoveries and outlines the difficulties of dating the artworks
themselves.
BRIDGE FOR BEGINNERS Leader: Lydia Adams
Max: 12 members
Have you ever wondered what the game of Bridge is all about?
Over the 8-week course, conducted by experienced teacher and player, Lydia
Adams, you will learn the basics of this very popular and interesting game. It is a
very good way to keep the brain active and to make new friends. Some knowledge
of card playing is advisable but certainly not necessary.
A recommended teaching manual (cost $20) will be available for purchase. Lessons
will be held at the North Nowra Community Centre, the home of Nowra Bridge
Club, in Hood Close, behind the shopping centre,.
So come along and try your hand (and brain) at the best card game of all.
OPERA AT BERRY Leader: Eric Courtney
COSI FAN TUTTE Co-sponsored by Kiama/Shoalhaven U3A's
Due to personal reasons, Vincent, our Italian Opera interpreter, is unable to be with
us this term.
Mozart seemed a worthwhile composer to provide an exhilarating operatic
experience. While, at first acquaintance, this work seems to have a rather politically
incorrect (these days) story line, it comes to a philosophically worthy ending. First
performed in 1790, its initial run (in Vienna) cut short by the death of the emperor
Joseph II, it had another five performances in that year but subsequently
disappeared from the operatic repertoire.
But, of course, the music is absolutely exquisite! Many of the work's arias will
reach into your emotions and your heart, even without a full translation of the
words. There is a good level of English subtitles in this performance. The staging
and acting are quite enchanting, with a delightful and substantive interpretation of
the role of Despina, one of the co-conspirators in the plot.
The work is in two acts, lending itself nicely to our two session presentation.

HISTORY NOWRA Leader: Lloyd Pitcher
AUSTRALIA'S WW2
SUBMARINES AROUND AUSTRALIA
World War II came to Australia in 1942. Both Japan and Germany attacked
Australian shipping in an effort to reduce Australia’s contribution to the Allies’
cause. This presentation looks at the impact of mines and submarine attacks on
Australian harbours and shipping. The Australian public had little idea of the war
being fought so close to home.
DARWIN BOMBED!
On Thursday 19 February 1942, Japanese forces made two bombing attacks on the
town of Darwin. The Australian Federal government censored the news of the
attacks. Peter Grose (2009) wrote this was the deadliest single event ever to take
place on Australian soil. We explore the Japanese motives for the attacks, the roles
of the USA and Britain in the 1930s and examine details of the two attacks.
Extensive damage was caused to Darwin Harbour and Town along with the RAAF
station. The aftermath, as civil and military order collapsed, was described as “a
shambles on a gigantic scale” and a shameful episode in Australia’s history.
Shocked Australians realised they were no more stoic or heroic than any other
people. Today, Darwin has fully recovered from the 1942 Japanese attacks (despite
Cyclone Tracy in 1974) and is a thriving city. How do we remember the bombing
of Darwin?
SYDNEY HARBOUR ATTACKED!
Since 26 January 1788, Sydney New South Wales had been aware of the possibility
of attacks by foreign nations. Its isolated position as a far-flung outpost of the
British Empire contributed to these fears. After the 1870 withdrawal of British
garrison troops, Sydney focused on its defensive harbour fortifications. The
American naval base at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii was attacked by Japanese forces
on 7 December 1941. On 8 December 1941, Australian Prime Minister Curtin
declared war on Japan. Japan bombed Darwin in February 1942. Sydney became
part of the war on 31 May 1942 when three Japanese midget submarines entered
Sydney Harbour to sink Allied shipping. On 08 June, Japanese submarines off the
coastline shelled Sydney and Newcastle. In November 2006, a surprising find was
made by divers off Bungan head, on Sydney’s northern beaches. We explore the
details of these attacks and the response of the military and civilians in Sydney and
in Newcastle.
THE COWRA BREAKOUT
At 1:50 am on Saturday 5 August 1942, a bugle sounded in Prisoner of War Camp
Number 12 in the country town of Cowra. 1,154 Japanese POW’s surged out of
their huts and attempted to break out of B Compound then through the perimeter
fences. Many were killed by the Australian garrison and many committed ritual
suicide. It took 10 days to round up the surviving escapees. No civilians were killed
or injured and there was no looting or pillaging. Government censorship suppressed
this news until 1965. We examine the types of prisoners in the camp and the
reasons for their escape attempt. Today, Cowra has the only war cemetery outside
Japan containing Japanese soldiers. It also has a Japanese Cultural Centre, a World
Peace Bell as well as the largest Japanese Garden in the southern hemisphere,.
Cowra is now designated a ‘Centre of World Friendship’.
