Max Dingle was born in Queensland but life brought him to the Shoalhaven, via service in the Royal Australian Navy. He pursued his interest in arts through night classes at Nowra TAFE before, on leaving the Navy, temporarily going to Sydney, to study at the National Art School. In the early 1980’s he came back to build his house and the studios for the various disciplines demanded by working in the areas of ceramics, painting and welding. Through his art, Max challenges us to think
about and understand the nature of human emotions.
He has just fi nished work on his next exhibition, Fetish, and opened up his house and studios to give us a preview of the show and an upcoming Sculpture Garden and Art Collection Tour, both of which feature in the 2016 SeeChange Art Festival. Could you tell us a bit about yourself? I’m now in my 70’s so hopefully I have had time to gain some wisdom through experience of and learning about art. From a very young age, a little boy really, I’ve been interested in art. But, coming from a small country town in Queensland studying art was not an option so though life’s vicissitudes ended serving in the Navy at HMAS Albatross in Nowra. Knowing the Navy didn’t suit, I studied arts at Nowra TAFE College, then applied for and was accepted into the National Art School. I realised that I couldn’t live in Sydney permanently, so I bought land at Sussex Inlet and built my home and various studios; I like to have space to spread out and work on multiple projects.
You are a painter, a sculptor, a curator and a writer. If you were forced to chose one of those occupations, which one would be your pick? I think I’d be a sculptor. Being a sculptor presents you with such a wide field. And I’m saying that now especially because of the small sculptures that I’ve been doing for my next exhibition, Fetish, into which I incorporate influences from art history. I really enjoyed the research process and reminding myself of Dada and the influence Dada has had over the many, many different art forms that have happened in the last 100 years. But, when I say I’d pick sculpture now, that is NOW, only because I had so much fun doing Fetish, and I’m still excited about it. If you ask me next week, since I started painting again, I would probably switch to painting as being my favourite.
Talking about your next show, Fetish, how would you like the public to see and interpret your work? Fetish is a deliberate term used to make people think about going to the exhibition, but hopefully, when they get there the works will take them closer to the real dictionary meaning of the word. Although there are some sexual meanings within the work, what I do want people to discover is enjoyment of the art and then find meanings and the influences of various art movements, such as Dada and Surrealism. music, opera and literature, plus I included a bit of food and sex, just for fun.
What inspires Max Dingle? My main inspirations have been myths and stories. Anything to do with psychological or emotional impacts on the human being inspires me. People like the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca. His poetry moves me, and my reaction to it is to produce sculpture and painting; the same with some of those psychological stories that came out of Greek myth, stories and legends that delve deep into the human heart and emotions, and how we react to other people. With Fetish, which is a total departure from the abstraction I’ve been doing, the works have got narratives, but even there, that narrative delves into human emotions and psychological reactions.
And, in the Shoalhaven, is there a favourite place to find inspiration? Yes, here, the bush where I live. The dry sclerophyll forest, despite being scrubby, prickly, full of biting flies, ticks, and mosquitoes, it is absolutely gorgeous. When you can walk around and find the most beautiful orchid, the size of your little fingernail, the beauty of this forest is subtle.
If you were to interview a local artist, who would that be? My initial reaction was to say Randall Sinnamon. I really like his work. Nevertheless, there is another artist, who I think hides her (artistic) light under a bushel and that is Tania Morandini, who does great work, but one hardly ever sees it. I would like to interview her about her art.
