ACADEMIC SKILLS WORKSHOPS Spring 2020 KOLT Koç University Office of Learning & Teaching KOLT Academic Skills Workshops are designed to support incoming students as they develop the academic habits and practices necessary for success throughout their university careers. Goal Setting and Time Management Target Audience: Incoming freshmen Description: This workshop gives students strategies and practical tips for setting priorities, establishing productive habits, scheduling their time effectively, and breaking larger goals and assignments into smaller, actionable tasks. Students will identify their personal time management challenges, begin drafting a weekly master schedule, and design systems to overcome procrastination and keep themselves motivated. The workshop includes guidance on extracting meaning from academic texts, as well as metacognitive approaches to self-assessment that facilitate understanding, retention, and mastery of material. Students learn how to create a realistic and focused study plan, how to assess their own level of preparation, and how to plan and use their time strategically during the exam period. Finally, students are guided through effective approaches to different types of exam questions. In this workshop, the emphasis is on producing successful essay responses. The aim of this workshop series is to familiarize students with the first steps of undergraduate research and to equip them with the tools necessary to produce research papers for their classes. In the first session, students will explore tools to collect secondary and primary sources for review and analysis. The second session will focus on how these sources can be evaluated and incorporated into a research paper. In the third session, the instructor will work one-on-one by appointment with students on their individual research papers. By the end of these workshops, students will be able to discuss and implement the key steps of the undergraduate research process, use Google Scholar effectively to gather secondary sources, assess the credibility of secondary sources, formulate a thesis statement, and construct a research paper according to a logical argumentative structure.
