KOLT Academic Skills Workshops are designed to support incoming students as they developthe academic habits and practices necessary for success throughout their university careers.

Goal Setting and Time ManagementTarget Audience: Incoming freshmen Description: This workshop gives studentsstrategies and practical tips for settingpriorities, establishing productive habits,scheduling their time effectively, and breakinglarger goals and assignments into smaller,actionable tasks. Students will identify theirpersonal time management challenges, begindrafting a weekly master schedule, and designsystems to overcome procrastination and keepthemselves motivated. Effective Reading Target Audience: Incoming freshmen Description: This workshop gives studentsconcrete and functional strategies for tacklingclass readings. The workshop includesguidance on extracting meaning from academictexts, as well as metacognitive approaches toself-assessment that facilitate understanding,retention, and mastery of material. How to Take an Exam: Social Sciences Target Audience: Undergraduate CSSHmajors and students in CSSH commoncore courses Description: In this workshop, studentslearn how to implement effective studystrategies, with an emphasis on self-testing skills. Students learn how tocreate a realistic and focused study plan,how to assess their own level ofpreparation, and how to plan and usetheir time strategically during the examperiod. Finally, students are guidedthrough effective approaches to differenttypes of exam questions. In thisworkshop, the emphasis is on producingsuccessful essay responses. The Research Paper:Mastering the Basics I, II, and IIITarget Audience: All undergraduates, especiallyfreshmen Description: This workshop will be delivered inthree different sessions. The aim of thisworkshop series is to familiarize students withthe first steps of undergraduate research and toequip them with the tools necessary to produceresearch papers for their classes. In the firstsession, students will explore tools to collectsecondary and primary sources for review andanalysis. The second session will focus on howthese sources can be evaluated andincorporated into a research paper. In the thirdsession, the instructor will work one-on-one byappointment with students on their individualresearch papers. By the end of theseworkshops, students will be able to discuss andimplement the key steps of the undergraduateresearch process, use Google Scholareffectively to gather secondary sources, assessthe credibility of secondary sources, formulatea thesis statement, and construct a researchpaper according to a logical argumentativestructure.
