General Education Referral (GE-008-134 REF)

• Design a 48 semester unit GE Subject Area Distribution model aligned with the breadth requirements in Article 4 of CSU Executive Order (EO) 1065. (Note: Include the requirements of EO 1061 within GE)

• Update the instruction requirements for each GE Subarea to be consistent with the requirements in Article 4 of EO 1065.

• Align the GE Program Learning Outcomes approved last year by the Senate with the GE Subareas to ensure that students have the opportunity to develop all the approved learning outcomes as they complete the GE breadth requirements.

• Expand the ECO template to include sections that address the specific requirements of GE courses, in order to provide guidance to departments as they develop GE course proposals.

What steps did the GE Committee take?

• Read EO 1065 and EO 1061 carefully• Looked at what other CSU campuses were

doing regarding GE• Asked faculty in each CPP college about

preferences regarding 48 unit GE or other total

What did the GE Committee find?

• Current CPP language has moved away from the original language of EO 1065 and has restricted course offerings.

• Research about other CSUs:– Some campuses include EO 1061 within GE– GE requirement and EO 1061 requirements may be

fulfilled by a variety of courses (students have options)– Some CSU campuses offer 2+1 semester units in

Physical and Life Science to be satisfied with 12 units of coursework.

General Education Committee Proposal for General Education:

• Develops a plan that would allow for some students to achieve a 48 Unit GE minimum (include EO 1061 requirements.)

• Cleans up existing General Education Language found in the Curriculum Guide Chapter 3.

• Includes more specific language from Executive Order 1065 in the revised definitions of GE areas and sub-areas.

• Provides GE definitions that will be broad and inclusive to encourage the development of multiple opportunities and options for our students.

CPP GE Committee Conclusions

1. Our campus is too large to be so limited by single courses to meet EO 1061 requirements

2. With the majority of colleges strongly supporting a 48-unit GE program, it was necessary to find a way to get to 48 units

3. There may potentially be other courses developed that would fulfill EO 1061

Feedback on Area D Proposal

• Comment: Opposed to the change to D, we should increase units from 48 to 51 units. Taking away a social science class makes us a technical school, not a polytechnic.

• Suggestions: – Collapse area B (1065 mandates 9 lower division units)– Cross-list courses that meet area E (i.e. Fullerton and

Stanislaus)

• Comment: Final Area D proposal offers new faculty the opportunity to develop collaborative classes, think creatively and out of the box courses.

Feedback on Area D Proposal

• Comment: Advising will be a challenge, since students have requirements that are not directly linked to a specific GE area.

• Comment: Why not take the EO 1061 requirements outside of General Education.

• Committee Response: In reality this would be at total of 9 units that students would be required to take outside of the general education. Thus the committee believes that a proposal showing this would be less favored.

Feedback on Area D Proposal

• Comment: Concern that a student could meet the history requirement without ever taking a class taught by a historian.

• Comment: EO 1061 states that students could take a test to meet the requirements

Feedback on Increasing Units• Comment: Though it would be nice to have more courses, within

limited resources it is not practical to increase units. This will affect the accreditation process of several departments.

• Comment: Currently we take 68 units, which is 40% of our quarter units. The Proposed 48 units will be 40% of 120 semester units. If we let the percentage go over 40, we're approaching a BA instead of a BS.

• Faculty and Department Chairs in several colleges expressed the strong need for a 48-unit GE to allow maximum units put toward their specific degree requirements, due to accreditation and overall competitive preparation of students

• Comment: Some courses, such as Calculus 1 and Math for future teachers will be 4 units not 3 units.

Comment: Will laboratory courses be submitted separately.

Feedback on Course Sequences

• Comment: Can course proposer submit a sequence of courses that meet certain general education requirements.

Feedback on Student Learning Outcomes

• Comment: Concerned that all courses in C1 cannot meet the SLO IVb, which involves imparting knowledge about the “physiological” and “psychological” development of those practicing or experiencing the visual and performing arts.

• Comment: How will courses proposers know how to develop their courses and ECOs.
