Smt.Prabhavathi Rao, holds a MastersDegree in Economics from the CentralUniversity of Hyderabad. She also holdsCertifications in Intellectual PropertyRights Foundation Course and PatentCooperation Treaty, from the WorldIntellectual Property Organisation(WIPO), Geneva, Switzerland. Her extensive experience of two and ahalf decades spans across the CorporateCommunications domain, havingworked for Organisations of reputeincluding the Confederation of IndianIndustry, the Institute of CharteredFinancial Analysts of India, amongothers.

She is also the recipient of theOutstanding Employee Award at India’sleading IT Staffing Company, MagnaInfotech, a Division of Quess Corp Ltd.In her current role, since over sevenyears, she spearheads the WTO & IPRRelay Cell at the Government ofKarnataka Centre for Export Promotion,namely the Visvesvaraya TradePromotion Centre, under the aegis ofthe Department of Industries &Commerce, Government of Karnataka. Through this initiative, she has beenclosely involved in facilitating andnurturing the Intellectual Propertyfabric of the State in conjunction with IPspecialists in the domain. She has beeninstrumental in spreading awareness onthe subject of Intellectual PropertyRights across academic institutions,industry and trade associations,chambers of commerce and like mindedgroups across the State.

She has been a catalyst in facilitatingand motivating the launch of IP Cells inacademic institutions and conducting aplethora of incisive training programs inIPR on varied topics customised to theaudience needs.   She has also been closely involved inPolicy Initiatives on behalf of theGovernment of Karnataka Centre forExport Promotion, the recent one beingthe Geographical Indications Policy forKarnataka which was unfurled in May2019. In her career span in retrospect, shebrings a rich blend of audio, visual andprint media experience, having authoredseveral features, editorials, websites,resumes, organised interview sessionsfor the print media for leadingmagazines and dailies on contemporarytopics.

Among her soft skills, she was anauditioned Compere for the YouthChannel of All India Radio, Hyderabadduring the 1991-1998 period havingbroadcast and anchored liveprogrammes, produced documentariesand features besides anchoring showsfor Corporates and Doordarshan.

Ms. Brinda K. Varma, is an Advocateand Patent Attorney with over 13 years ofexperience in dealing with IPRsincluding Patents and trademarks. She  is associated with research wings ofseveral institutes to frame their IPRstrategies and appears in various courtsin Bangalore for her clients. She is themanaging partner of Aekam Legal, a lawfirm based out of Bangalore, whichhandles and assists businesses includingstart-up’s in various legal matters frominception of a company to protectingtheir IP.

Her primary focus areas are patentdrafting and prosecution, IP litigation,training researchers of variouseducational institutes and startups onvarious aspects of patent, trademark andcopyright related areas. She is associated with IntellectualProperty and Technology Licensingoffice of Indian Institute of Science astheir IP Consultant. She handlestechnology transfer deals for IIScinventions, drafting and negotiatingresearch and license agreements. She was instrumental in transformingthe IP cell of IISc from a servicefacilitator to a service provider. She wasinvolved in handling several researchbased collaborations with industries.She worked towards pursuing asystematic, mutually-beneficialengagement with research-basednational and international companies inorder to encourage them to partner withIISc.

Ms. Brinda holds a master’s degree inBiochemistry and Biotechnology and anLLB degree from Bangalore University. She also holds a Post-graduation degreein Business Administration fromSymbiosis, Pune. She is also pursuingher PhD at NLSIU in the field of Patentlaw. She is a registered Indian Patent Agentand qualified to practice before theIndian Patent office. She is the recipientof Association of Overseas TechnicalScholarship (AOTS) for Patent Experts. Ms. Brinda is also active in IPR  andcommercial law litigation and in thefield of contract law. She is a regularspeaker at various forums and hasdelivered talks at various researchorganisations across the country in thefield of IPR and is also involved incorporate training in the fields ofcommercial laws, contracts andconsumer related laws.

She is also been a visiting faculty at IIM-Shillong. She has authored a chapternamely, Intellectual Property Rights andthe Technology Transfer Process for abook titled “Treatise on processmetallurgy”. Also, she is  associated with VisvesvarayaTrade Promotion Centre (VTPC),    andKSCST( Karnataka state counsel forscience & technology), Govt. ofKarnataka, as an IPR consultant.

Dr. Farah Deeba, is an  Author &Independent Consultant. She is anexpert panel member for, VTPC (Dept.of Industries and Commerce, Govt. ofKarnataka) and also a Visiting Professorat the School of Innovation & Research,CMR University, Bangalore. Prior to thisshe has workedwith  Monsanto  Company as a  SeniorScientist (1996-2009). Dr. Farah has a  Ph.D. in AgricultureEntomology & Plant Pathology  (1996)from the G. B. Pant University ofAgriculture and Technology, Pantnagar,India. She has further specialized inIntellectual Property Protection.

She has more than  twenty years ofexperience  in the Agriculture industry,Biotech R&D, teaching, researchguidance, training & capacity building,research communication, scientificoutreach and in providing strategicpolicy inputs. Her areas of work include– IP Protection, AgricultureBiotechnology, CompetitiveIntelligence, Technology Prospecting,Knowledge Management, Data Miningand Text Mining. She has  publications  in peer reviewedjournals including those on Bt-cotton,Bt-corn and IPRs. She is an inventorwith patents in Genomics. Apart from her scientific publications,Farah has four  literary  works to hercredit -  ‘Corporate Curry’, a novel;'Melodies Divine’; ‘Natakrangotri’ and‘Zindagi ka Saaz’, a book of lyrics. Farahis a trained  Ghazal  Singer with a musicalbum to her credit.

One Day Workshop onIntellectual Property Rights and its

Significance for Academia and Business

One day Workshop on “IntellectualProperty Rights and its Significance forAcademia and Business”, was held on the7th of March 2020, Saturday, from 10:00a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It was attended byaround 200 people (faculty of all thedepartments, research scholars and PGstudents). The Workshop started with an Inauguralfunction, where the speakers of the daywere welcomed by principal, Dr. K VNarayanaswamy, Dr. Shanthi Mahesh,HOD, Department of InformationScience and,

Engineering, Dr. Aishwarya P, HOD,Department of Computer Science andEngineering and Dr. Nalinakshi, HOD,Department of Basic Science with aBouquet. This was followed by our principal, Dr. KV Narayanaswamy, addressing thegathering of Faculty and Studentsemphasizing on the History of Howwomen’s day came into existence as thenext day 8th of March is celebrated asworld Women’s Day and also about theneed of IPR. Then Dr. Shanthi Mahesh, HOD,Department of Information Science andEngineering, introduced the speaker ofthe first Session “Smt. Prabhavathi Rao”,Facilitator – IP Initiatives WTO & IPRRelay Cell, Visvesvaraya Trade PromotionCentre, Department of Industries &Commerce, Government of Karnatakaand handed the session over to thespeaker.

The first session was a very informativesession with Smt. Prabhavathi Rao,highlighting the types of items patentedand copyrighted, the need for copyrightand patent, when to go for a patent andhow to apply for the same. She also accentuated the achievements ofour state Karnataka in the area ofcopyrights and patents. To mention a fewKarnataka is the first state to copyrightmany items like Engineering designs,Automobiles etc. It is the fourth largest technologicalcluster in the world, It is the coffee hub ofthe country, GI(Geographical Indication)Hub of the country and many more.

This was followed by Dr. Aishwarya P,HOD, Department of Computer Scienceand Engineering, introducing thespeaker of the next Session “Smt. BrindaVarma”, Founder, Aekam Legal Abode,Patent Attorney and Senior Consultant –IP Commercialisation, IISC. This was a very interactive session whereSmt. Brinda Varma started with anOverview of IPR & its significance,difference between Intellectual propertyand Intellectual Property rights, Whatare the Trips Guidelines, differencebetween patent authentication andregulative authentication. She also presented the criteria forregistration of IP, what is meant bynovelty and when can an invention bepatented and what is meant byGeographical Indication, providing acomparison with employee contract.

It was followed by a short break, whereHigh tea was provided for all theparticipants. Then the third and final session startedwith the introduction of the speaker Dr.Farah Deeba, by Dr. Nalinakshi, HOD,Department of Basic Sciences, followedby Dr Farah Deeba laying emphasis onCopyrights as an important IP tool forAcademia. In this session, she spoke aboutcopyrights and research ethicselaborating on Computer Softwarerelated Inventions, IP protection ofSoftware, How to register for Copyrights,difference between copyright andplagiarism, what is citation and whenwriting a paper how and where to providecitations.

Finally, the workshop successfully endedwith vote of Thanks provided by Mrs.Vijayalakshmi, Assistant Professor,Department of ISE and the entire eventanchored by Ms. Syeda Roshni Ahmed,Assistant Professor, Department of ISE.
