Auction Rules and Procedures
Registration Check-in at the registration table located in the entrance to the Sanctuary building to receive
your Auction Bid Number. You MUST have a bid number to place bids.
Bid Sheets The silent auction bid sheets look like this:
DOO2 Fantasy Dinner Party – 4/17/20 – John Doe
Description of Event, something very exciting.
Bid Place 1 Place 2 Place 3
$30 301 301 250
$35 250 539
$40
All bids must be in even amounts.
In the silent and live auctions, the winner is whoever has the last bid number in each
column. In our example, #539 won one place for $35, and #250 won two places and can
bring a friend to the party. #250 will pay $65 for two places, one at $30 and one at $35.
#301 had bid on two places but was bumped on both.
In the fixed price auction, every spot is the same price, and every spot wins. When all the
spots are filled, that item is closed.
Quickie
Boards
The quickie boards happen simultaneously with the open auction. The bid sheet for each
board is projected onto the wall for 5 minutes, during which time people can bid continuously.
Many of the physical items sold on the quickie boards will be on display at the front of the
sanctuary.
How to Bid There will be ASL interpreters at the auction.
To bid in the fixed price or silent auctions, write your bid number on the bid sheet.
To bid in the live auction, hold up your bid number (you will receive it written large on a
piece of paper when you register). For items with multiple places, also hold up the number of
fingers to indicate how many spaces you want to purchase. The auctioneer will call out your
bid number and the number of spaces you want. The recorder will enter this information on
the bid sheet.
To bid on a quickie board, raise your hand and a runner will bring you a slip of paper. Write
down the dollar amount of your bid, the item number, and your bid number. The runner will
then bring it back to the quickie board operators, who will record it.
Check-out &
Payment
Check-out will begin at 8:15 in the foyer. Give your bid number to one of the check-out
people and you will be shown a list of your winnings and the total amount of money due.
Payments are due on Auction night by cash or check made payable to UUCSS. Please be
sure to note “2019 auction” in the memo line of your check. We cannot accept credit
cards.
Your receipt will be provided. Items you won can be picked up at the winner’s table in the
choir area. Any items that are left will be placed in Community Hall by the piano for pick up
by November 24, 2019. Anything left after November 24 will be donated to a local charity.
Delivery of
Services
All events and services are fulfilled on the honor system. Neither the auction committee nor
UUCSS can enforce these commitments. All donations are assumed to be made in good faith.
To bid, the bidder number is
written in the next blank space

used to enter each of the raffles.

them, and drop each ticket in the can(s) for the raffle(s) of your choosing.

know who will be taking your place.
Suggestions for ways to find substitutes:
New members (ask the church office or membership committee)
Volunteer of the Month
A member of the staff, board, or council.
Please be considerate of those who go to the effort and expense to prepare for your

be found at www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc506.html, under “contributions.”
Your Final
Statement
As part of the check-out process, you will be offered a preliminary printout list of the
items you purchased and how much you paid. As soon as possible after the auction, and
after the auction data is checked for errors against the bid sheets, you will receive a final
statement list of what you bought and who bought your donations by email or snail mail.
If this final tally differs from the amount you paid at the auction, please resolve the
difference with the church collector, Emily Harris ([email protected]).
If you would like another copy of your auction statement, please call the church
administrator at 301-273-9745.

soil) was complex and has left a mark on the modern landscape. We’ll journey through time and visit an
infamous lynching tree, stop at the three-hundred-year-old Hazelwood Plantation House, visit Prince
George’s first capitol City (Charlestown); and sample the verdant landscape of the Central Patuxent (Jug

P047 UUBSS – Unique and Unusual Beers of Silver Spring - 05/16/20 - Esther & Mark McBride
Silver Spring is developing its own local brewing scene, so we’ll try some of the local brews from
Denizens, Silver Branch, and Astro Lab brewing companies. For comparison, we’ll also have samples

other good edibles will complement the beer.
P048 Whiskey Galore! (British Comedies III) - 10/24/20 - Esther & Mark McBride
It’s 1943, and the inhabitants of the remote Scottish island of Todday face a threat worse than the
Germans – rationing cuts off their supply of whisky. With few other diversions, older residents start
dying from the lack. (Iit’s no coincidence that whisky is uisge beatha, the Water of Life, in Scottish
Gaelic.) But wait – a freighter with 50,000 cases wrecks on the rocky shore! It’s life or death for the
islanders, but the home guard sees only larceny. How will this all turn out? Come and see while you
munch on scones, shortbread, and other Scottish goodies.
P050 Passport to Pimlico! (British Comedies I) - 01/25/20 - Esther & Mark McBride
It’s 1949. A little neighborhood in the middle of London is full of bomb craters, but one of the bombs
uncovers a long-hidden treasure and an ancient document that proves that Pimlico isn’t British, it’s still
part of the Duchy of Burgundy! The new Burgundians can burn their hated ration books, but can they
hold off the government (which wants Pimlico back) long enough to make peace on their own terms?
We’ll watch this classic British comedy as we nosh on equally classic British snacks and beverages.

L002 Discovery Flight! - John Sullivan
Try a Discovery Flight! See what flying is really like! After 30 minutes of ground preparation, you’ll
then take the controls on a thirty-minute flight. You'll help with pre-flight inspection and walkaround;
then go flying with the instructor. Bravo Flight Training is based in Frederick and also operates out of
Montgomery County Airpark, Gaithersburg. Bravo was founded in 2016 by Brenda Tibbs, who was the
2016 AOPA Flight Instructor of the year; a national award. (Brenda and Bravo helped me "get current"
in 2017 after many years of not flying; I'd attained a bunch of pilots ratings in the mid-1970s thanks to
the GI Bill). Discovery Flights are for anyone, but may be particularly suited for younger persons who
may think about a career or hobby of aviation.

you. With everyone at a round table and a rolling lazy Susan in the center, conversation and sharing are
easy and convivial, so it's an especially good event for newcomers.

audio recordings on wendystevejazz.com.

carpentry work, basic tree-work, installed shelving, repaired fences, and lots more! We provide hard
work and enthusiasm, and you provide the lunch. We have had a number of “repeat buyers” for this
item, so you know we’re worth it! Not sure if your project is a good fit for this crew? Check with Steve
Wilmarth in advance to find out whether or not to bid. We have lots of basic hand and power tools, but
if you have in mind anything complicated or out of the ordinary, let’s talk first.
