THOSE WHO SERVE From the Pastor

We have just come through a blessed period of Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas and New Year’s.

We have much to be thankful for. I appreciate so much the great music we enjoyed which was

evidence of both a great deal of talent and diligent preparation. I’m grateful for the mission-

minded outreach done by our church family during this time of the year and also throughout the

year. I’m grateful for the involvement of children, youth and families during this season and

throughout the year. Personally, Susan and I are grateful for the many kind expressions of love

you shared with us during the Christmas season.

As we begin the New Year, I want to take the opportunity to welcome two new staff members.

Phil Morris was hired as our custodian and began December 15. He will be responsible for our

facilities’ upkeep and maintenance. Phil and his wife, Bobbie, joined our church in September,

2014. They attend the Early Light service and are involved in the Faithful Workers SS Class. Phil

worked for AT & T and Cisco Systems in computer software before retirement. He is knowledgea-

ble in construction, maintenance, electronics, computer, radio and software. Phil has an electrical

license, is a “do-it-yourselfer” and likes to fix things.

Natalie Gray has been hired as our Director of Christian Education and will begin her work here on

January 17. She and her husband, Brian, live in Salisbury. Natalie comes to us from Rehobeth

UMC in Terrell, NC where she has effectively served since 2012 as Director of Youth and Children’s

Ministries. Prior to that she was a fulltime youth volunteer at First UMC, China Grove. After re-

turning from a mission trip to Guatemala in 2012 she experienced a call to ministry. Natalie has

previously worked with the American Red Cross and the Rowan County Health Department and

was responsible for health, wellness and safety training programs with an emphasis on youth.

Natalie is a 2001 graduate of Appalachian State with a degree in psychology, a certified meeting

and event planner (UNC-Ch. 2006), and is currently a student in the Master of Divinity program at

Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury.

We are grateful for the talents and commitment that Phil and Natalie bring to our church and look

forward to our ministry together for the mission of Christ and our Church.

Blessings,

Pastor Glenn Myers

Thank you to all who have turned in your 2017 Every Member in Ministry Forms. If you haven’t

turned yours in yet, forms are still available in the church office and in the Narthex of the Sanctuary.

The forms will be processed during the month of January.

Training on January 9, 2017. We ask each

of you to keep this new ministry on your

prayer list for God to lead us through His

Holy Spirit. Thank you!

Dear Church Family,

I want to thank you all for your love, encouragement, thoughts, and prayers. They have been felt by

Tracy, Reid and me. Things are going very well. I have been forgiven and I am being restored. God

is very gracious, merciful and loving. I am learning and re-learning a lot. The Lord is healing me

physically, mentally and spiritually. Again, thank you, and I love you all !

In Christ,

John Huneycutt 12/13/16

We are appreciative of your kindnesses of cards, food, gifts and thoughts throughout the Christmas

season. We enjoy our ministry at FUMC, and we are blessed daily by all that you do for us throughout

the year, and our prayer is that you had a wonderful Christmas and that you’ll have a fantastic 2017!

THE MUSIC OF LIFE

Most often, in fact almost all of the time, there is some tune going on in my mind. It can be a classical

tune, a hymn, or just a “made-up” melody that just comes from nowhere! With this thought, I look at

human life as one big orchestra where we, you and I, are the players. Our composition to perform is

the “Symphony of Life.” In this piece, we have an infinite number of dissonances and melodies blend-

ing into one picture of harmony and magnificence. As players, we study the “music” and we practice

our parts until we are able to play in harmony and in “tune” with the Great Composer. Ask yourself

this question: “Am I playing the music, or just the notes?” We all know the technicalities of the print-

ed score, and we usually play with precision. But do we sometimes work so hard at something that

we lose sight of why we started it in the first place? It’s very easy to get caught up in “getting it per-

fect.” But in getting it “perfect”, we can lose touch with what brought us to this point in our lives.

Keep your instrument in tune. If our instruments are out of tune, or if we willfully insist on playing in

our own ways, regardless of the score, we create discord for ourselves and for others in this great

orchestra of life. These discords of our own making, and we cannot attribute them to the Great Com-

poser. The discords will last as long as we refuse to learn our parts and play them in tune with the

Great Score. Therefore, play the notes the best you can, but remember that making the music of life

is WHY you are playing! Happy New Year! Tommy D

From Deep Roots Community Garden Committee

A new year begins! Welcome 2017!

What will this year hold for us all and where will God take us? The excitement of not knowing

what is ahead spurs us on to much imagination and planning for a new garden season!

We hold you all in our hearts and hope that your new year will be filled with unknown joys and

experiences!

While our gardens have been sleeping, God has continued to keep working! Betty Foster called

us in December to let us know that a friend of hers, Casey Foster (no relation) had some wooden

boxes that he was willing to donate to the garden if we wanted them. They were 12 inches wide,

about 14 inches tall and 20 feet long! We went out to see them and they are beautiful pine box-

es that are just perfect for the herb gardens we were hoping to put around the inside of the gar-

dens to ward off our little critters! What a wonderful gift to give! Thank you Betty and Casey for

thinking of us and supplying us with this donation to help our gardens grow!

Our gardens will open officially on April 1st, but anyone who would like to start an early garden in

March can contact Diane Salmon at 336-492-2360 and let us know. The price for the 4 X 12 beds

remains at $10 each for the garden season and we have added ten new raised beds to the Clem-

ent Garden location and will have sixteen new raised beds at the Storehouse For Jesus garden

location. So spread the word and let people know that there are spaces available for them to try

out their green thumbs!

Our first Deep Roots Dinner will be held on Wednesday, January 25th. We are not sure of the

menu as yet, but we promise to make it memorable! We are hoping to install a new irrigation

system at the Clement Garden this season and your support would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all! God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good!
