Germany is made up of sixteen Länder (singular Land, colloquially called Bundesland, for "federated state") which are partly sovereign constituent states of the Federal Republic of Germany. Land literally translates as "country", and constitutionally speaking, they are constituent countries. Often referred to in English by German speakers as "states", the term "Land" (with an uppercase 'L') is used in the official English version of the Basic Law[1] and in UK parliamentary proceedings.[2] However, it is sometimes translated as "federal states" in other publications

The flag of Germany is a tricolour consisting of three equal horizontal bands displaying the national colours of Germany: black, red, and gold.[1] The flag was first adopted as the national flag of modern Germany in 1919, during the Weimar Republic.The black-red-gold tricolour first appeared in the early 19th century and achieved prominence during the 1848 Revolutions. The short-lived Frankfurt Parliament of 1848–1850 proposed the tricolour as a flag for a united and democratic German state. With the formation of the Weimar Republic after World War I, the tricolour was adopted as the national flag of Germany. Following World War II, with the coat of arms of East Germany. Since reunification on 3 October 1990, the black-red-gold tricolour has remained the flag of Germany.

The Germany national football team (German: Die deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft) is the football team that has represented Germany in international competition since 1908.[2] It is governed by the German Football Association (Deutscher Fußball-Bund), founded in 1900.[6][7]

From 1950 to 1990, it was essentially the team of West Germany[8] as the DFB is based in Frankfurt, located in the former West Germany. Under Allied occupation and division, two other separate national teams were also recognized by FIFA:

The Germany women's national football team (German: Deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft der Frauen) represents Germany in international women's association football and is directed by the German Football Association (DFB). Initially called "West Germany" in informal English, the team played its first international match in 1982. After German reunification in 1990, the DFB squad remained the national team of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The concept of Germany as a distinct region in central Europe can be traced to Roman commander Julius Caesar, who referred to the unconquered area east of the Rhine as Germania, thus distinguishing it from Gaul (France), which he had conquered. The victory of the Germanic tribes in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (AD 9) prevented annexation by the Roman Empire. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the Franks conquered the other West Germanic tribes. When the Frankish Empire was divided among Charlemagne's heirs in 843, the eastern part became East Francia. In 962, Otto I became the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, the medieval German state.

When Ebert was elected as the leader of the S.P.D. after the death of August Bebel, the party members of the S.P.D. were deeply divided because of the party's support for World War I. Ebert supported the Burgfrieden and tried to isolate the war opposers in the party. After the war and the end of the monarchy he served as the first President of Germany from 1919 until his death in office. Before being elected as President, he briefly served as Chancellor during the last months of the German Empire. After he was announced as the new President, the government intervened together with the army and right wing Freikorps against the leftist uprisings, which resulted in the death of several left politicians and ended the partnership of the S.P.D. in government with the Independent Social Democratic Party of Deutschland (U.S.P.D.).

President of Germany 2013As Germany has a parliamentary system of government with the Chancellor running the government, the President has mainly ceremonial and supervisory duties. He can give direction to general political and societal debates and has some important "reserve powers" in case of political instability (such as those provided for by Article 81 of the Basic Law).[3] All federal laws must be signed by the President before they can come into effect; he can only refuse to sign a law that he believes to violate the constitution.The President is elected by the Federal Convention, a body established solely for that purpose.

The first German car made and patented was actually the first working car made. It was called the Motorwagen, and was created by Karl Benz, who started Mercedes-Benz. The first car to be made officially was a steam-driven cannon mover made in the 1700's, but the car did not work and crashed.

The coat of arms of Germany displays a black eagle (the Bundesadler "Federal Eagle", formerly Reichsadler "Imperial Eagle") on a yellow shield (Or, an eagle displayed sable). It is a re-introduction of the coat of arms of the Weimar Republic (in use 1919–1935) adopted by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1950.[1] The current official design is due to Tobias Schwab (1887–1967) and was introduced in 1928.
