It may be a little scary to start with but, it’s an exciting challenge.

It is all part of you learning to become

more independent and helping you to develop into happy, organised and confident young

people.

EVERYTHING MAY SEEM DIFFERENT

There will seem like many changes when you arrive in September and it is a normal reaction to

feel nervous or overwhelmed.

You may be taught by up to 10

teachers and you will notice that they will have

different teaching and learning styles and personalities.

You will be responsible for your books, PE kit,

dinner card, bus tickets and other school

equipment.

You will have an individual school

timetable.

The school site is big and you will move from

classroom to classroom and carry all your

belongings.

There will be a whole new list of

rules and regulations.

You may have to travel further and

independently.

Break-time and lunch-time will be organised differently and you will be more independent.

Dear Future Sladians,

A LETTER FROM A YEAR 7 STUDENT

First of all I would like to congratulate you on getting into Canon Slade, it is an achievement and you should be proud. You have made the right choice coming here, this school will support you and help you achieve your dreams. This time last year I was in the same position as you excited, intrigued, a bit scared and anxious. I had no idea what awaited me and which path it would lead me onto. I know you will have these feelings too, I promise you have nothing to worry about. Moving to Canon Slade is an adventure, yes it can also be frightening, it’s a big school and everything is different to primary school; you will get used to it. Don’t worry if you don’t know many people, I knew hardly anyone and I made friends straight away, every one is feeling the same way as you are. When making new friends, a piece of advice is just be yourself. Here we want people to be themselves.

My top tips: 1. Be yourself.2. Smile.3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help - everyone here, including the teachers, has had to learn how to get around Canon Slade, people will always help you.4. Be positive.5. And most of all enjoy it. Someone once said that we cannot become what we want by remaining what we are. Moving to Canon Slade is your next step closer to becoming what you want to be.

At Canon Slade -Your feelings matter. You are capable of amazing things You can dream and You are enough. You won’t regret this new chapter in your life as the people, experiences and opportunities will stay with you forever.

I hope and pray you enjoy every single second that you spend at Canon Slade, I wish you all the best.

Good Luck from Aoife

Homework is easy! One of the reasons people fear secondary school is because of the rumours about homework. Admittedly, there is more homework than in primary school, but if you keep organised

and complete work as soon as you're home, you'll quickly find there's nothing to worry about!

Be organisedBefore each school day, look at your

timetable, and prepare what you need. This way, you can avoid missing out on P.E or

having to carry all of your books

Don’t be a sheepTo be a sheep is to "follow the crowd" like a sheep does. In

secondary school, one of the worst things you can do is pretend to be someone you're not in order to fit in. Just be

true to yourself because you won't regret it.

Share your prayersAs you know, Canon Slade is a Christian school. You are more than welcome to

share your worries with the chaplain, or simply pray with others. We also have a

pastoral team who can help.

Join a clubYou'll find that throughout year 7, there are many opportunities to further your hobbies,

and that it is a great idea to join a club. Moreover, if you're struggling to find friends, I could not recommend this more as you will

meet people with similar interests.

You are truly lucky to be in this amazing school, where you will feel welcomed and hopefully at home. In secondary

school, the friendships you make and things you learn will last you your entire life. Things may seem a little

overwhelming at times, but that’s okay. Remember to prove yourself by doing the best you can and overcome whatever

obstacles lie in your path, and then you will achieve success. Good luck from Archie!

Time is keyIn secondary school, you need to use the toilet at break and

lunch, not during a lesson. Time is also important when getting to classes, so keep your timetable handy.

TIPS FROM A YEAR 7

STUDENT

Be responsibleIn many instances you will have to take

many (possibly expensive) things to school. Always remember where you leave these.

Page 7: able to succeed at secondary school, it NEW SCHOOL, NEW ... · First of all I would like to congratulate you on getting into Canon Slade, it is an achievement and you should be proud

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR

You’re not alone and there are people around you that care about you and want to help

CANON SLADE STUDENTS ARE ALWAYS KIND

KINDNESS, TOLERANCE, ACCEPTANCE

Be that one person to say ‘Are you OK?’ Always CHOOSE KINDNESS. A kind word or action can make a huge

difference to someone experiencing difficulties. Our school is supporting the importance of KINDNESS.

Kindness Wall I would like us to create a kindness display in your new

form rooms in the Autumn term. I am inviting you to fill it with examples of kind people from history, compliments to

kind people in your lives, and your pledge to be an ‘upstander’ to bullying, look after one another and caring for

each others well being. You can start work on them now and bring your creations into school on the first day.

Page 8: able to succeed at secondary school, it NEW SCHOOL, NEW ... · First of all I would like to congratulate you on getting into Canon Slade, it is an achievement and you should be proud

BEING READY

Always pack your bag the night before and check you have completed any homework tasks.

Get up for school on time and eat a healthy breakfast.

Wearing a watch but not an iwatch, will help you manage your time more effectively. It will help you be punctual to school and for every lesson.

TIPS FOR GETTING THROUGH THE FIRST FEW WEEKS IN YEAR 7

TRAVELLING

You may feel more comfortable sitting downstairs on the school bus– they can be noisy and very busy at times.

Make sure you always have your IGO pass.

Go straight home after school, but have a plan where you know what to do if you are delayed or miss the bus.

UNIFORM

Make sure you are wearing your tie every day. Make sure that you have a spare tie at home, just in case you lose it.

Knowing the school rules regarding uniform is essential.

Make sure all your uniform is labelled.

We don’t have enough space for lockers in school. It is your responsibility to look after your coat, trainers and PE. You will have to carry this around school.

Remember to pick up your PE kit when you get off the bus. If you forget it, your parents or carers will have the responsibility of ringing the bus company or replacing your kit which is expensive!

REMEMBER EVERYONE IS IN THE SAME POSITION. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILTY AS A YEAR GROUP TO LOOK AFTER AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE ON THEIR OWN SPEAK TO THEM, OFFER A SMILE AND A HAND OF FRIENDSHIP.

Page 9: able to succeed at secondary school, it NEW SCHOOL, NEW ... · First of all I would like to congratulate you on getting into Canon Slade, it is an achievement and you should be proud

TIPS FOR GETTING THROUGH THE FIRST WEEK

YOUR NEW ENVIRONMENT AND ROUTINE

Ensure you always walk on the left hand side of the corridor and there is no running at any time.

There is no eating and drinking in classrooms and on the corridors.

At the end of each lesson always check you have packed all your belongings and take them with you.

Take time to learn the plan of the school and understand your timetable. Don’t panic if you get lost, ask the nearest teacher or student. Familiarize yourself with where all the toilet blocks are located.

Get to your lessons on time – especially after break or lunch time.

ORGANISATION

Create a work space at home so that you have somewhere to do your school work and store all your books and equipment.

Get yourself into a routine each evening for doing your homework on the day it has been set. Make the time to do it properly and take a pride in your work. Get it done and out of the way early, leaving the rest of the evening free.

Check your planner every evening and make sure you fill it in correctly in lesson so that you have a clear understanding of your homework.

Make sure all your pens, pencils and any other equipment is kept in a pencil case and labelled. Have spares if possible.

Get into a habit of emptying your bag each evening. Keep it organised and re pack it for the next day.

EXTRA SUPPORT

If you feel really poorly go our First Aider Mrs Jones whom will check you are ok. Sometimes however it is best to stay in your lessons as it can keep your mind occupied.

If Mrs Jones thinks you are not well enough to be in school she will contact home.

Find out where Pastoral Base is. It is always a place that can be accessed at break or lunch time if there is a problem.

TIPS FOR GETTING THROUGH THE FIRST FEW WEEKS IN YEAR 7

LATES AND PUNCTUALITY

We expect you to arrive on time to school and to your lessons. However, we do understand that sometimes buses can arrive late.

If you are late to school you must sign in at the Student Support Centre.

If you have an appointment you must have a blue slip from your form tutor and sign out at the main office.

SCHOOL STRUCTURE

You will have a form tutor who will have the responsibility for your well being. They will know you best. You will register with them each morning and they may also teach you for a particular subject.

There are 10 forms per year group. 7B, 7L,7T, 7O, 7N, 7C, 7H, 7U, 7R, 7S. You may be referred to as B-N or C-S.

Your Head of Year and has the responsibility of all the year group, monitoring your well being, academic progress, behaviour and attendance.

The Assistant Heads of Year and Pastoral Assistant also help with these responsibilities. The Assistant Head of KS3 will also monitor your learning and progress.

REMEMBER EVERYONE IS IN THE SAME POSITION. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILTY AS A YEAR GROUP TO LOOK AFTER AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE ON THEIR OWN SPEAK TO THEM, OFFER

A SMILE AND A HAND OF FRIENDSHIP.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY

MOBILE PHONE POLICY. GETTING IT RIGHT!!!

As a school we want to encourage our students to talk to each other and develop friendship groups at breaks and lunchtimes, rather than use mobile phones. We also want to safe guard you from

cyber bullying and mis use of social media.

Mobile phones must remain switched off during school hours and this includes break time and lunch time.

Mobile phones must be put away as soon as you arrive onto the school site.

Any students seen with their mobile phone will have it confiscated.

You are also not permitted to wear Smart or Apple watches.

You may use your mobile phone at the end of the day in the bus lane, but not at the start of the day.
