Sout h Pacif ic?s First Acoust ic Mant a Tagging Project
Kokomo Private Island, Fiji?s most exclusive private island resort has partnered with the world?s leading manta ray research and conservation charities to launch the South Pacific Acoustic Manta Tagging Project.
Expanding the resort?s commitment to sustainability, the program works to estimate the size and movement of Fiji?s manta population, raising awareness of their conservation needs and the benefits of sustainable tourism.
Developed in conjunction with the UK-based Manta Trust and Manta Project Fiji, the tagging project ? the first of its kind in the South Pacific ? is led by marine biologist and dive master Luke Gordon who has spent over five years working in Fiji on various conservation topics.
Working alongside Gordon on this initiative is Kokomo?s resident Marine Biologist, Cliona O?Flaherty who has implemented
interactive practices on island in order to educate guests firsthand on the importance of conservation. Cliona most recently won the ?Sust ainable Pract ices Cham pion? Award at the Women in Travel Awards.
Blessed with pristine, crystal-clear water and fringed by the Great Astrolabe Reef ? the fourth largest on the planet and world-famous for its diving, snorkeling and abundant marine life ? Kokomo?s stunning white sand beaches are the perfect base to study the species.
Graceful, intelligent and curious, manta rays are familiar to resort guests throughout the year, with snorkelling encounters peaking in the period from April ? September. Both species of manta ray are present in Kokomo?s idyllic waters, although each has been listed as vulnerable worldwide by the International

Union for Conservation of Nature.
?The manta ray population here has had very litt le contact with humans which makes these gentle giants some of the most curious and playful mantas,? says Project Leader, Luke Gordon.
?The feeding aggregations [around Kokomo] are currently seen nowhere else in Fiji; being in the middle of a cyclone of 40-plus huge manta rays is an experience you will never forget.?
Since 2017 Kokomo and the Manta Trust has helped increase the size of the Fiji database by more than 60% and beginning in August 2019, the South Pacific Acoustic Manta Tagging Project aims to tag 18 animals in its first season, with a network of 11 receivers placed around the island to record their movements.
As well as the incredible opportunity to swim among the ocean?s most majestic
creatures, Kokomo and the Manta Trust are offering resort guests the opportunity to adopt a manta ray by contributing to research efforts. Guests have the chance to name their ray and receive bi-monthly updates on their manta?s progress, including sightings and exciting news from the team?s ongoing research.
The South Pacific Acoustic Manta Tagging Project is the latest entry in Kokomo Private Island Fiji?s suite of environmentally focused sustainability programs. It builds on a recognised suite of initiatives including mangrove reforestation, an active research program to help coral survive the effects of global warming, and a water-bottling plant that minimises single-use plastic

But such buildings! They seem to have sprung from a collaboration of Lutyens and Albert Speer. Fifty years of tropical rains have weathered the austere concrete finish-meant to look like ashlar stone-into great streaks of light and dark grey and patches of moss. The only colour is a small golden dome, perched like half an orange on top of a clock tower that might have been stolen from an automobile factory of the 1930s. In concession to the climate the architect recessed the windows so deeply in the walls that they seem to be glassless; and on the side facing Victoria Parade the structural walls are altogether hidden in the gloom of frowning balconies and empty towers.' The buildings have the air of a lost city rescued from the jungle-an art deco Angkor Wat.
Schutz's guide makes no comment on the architecture but does relate an anecdote. It seems that Fiji's Parliament occupies land that was formerly a seedy neighbourhood of bars and brothels. A sailor, confronted after a long voyage by the imposing structures on the site of his favourite haunt, exclaimed: "My word, Annie has done well. "Derek pressed a bell on t he palm t ree:" I have to admit this was a good idea after all."We were sitting at a garden umbrella table beside the swimming pool of the Grand Pacific Hotel, gazing out over that tiny alveolus of the Pacific Ocean known as Suva Bay. After my walk to the Government Buildings yesterday, had crossed Victoria Parade for a drink in this establishment famed as the Raffles of Fiji. It looked exclusive from the outside-a fa~de of Doric columns painted brilliant white, a semi-circular drive shaded by royal palms, and a porte-cochere of Romanesque ironwork flanked by a magnificent Fiji fan palm like a peacock's tail in full spread.
Inside there was a sleepy, half-deserted air, a feeling of space and emptiness conveyed by the arched ceiling of the cathedral-like lounge, the skylights, white paint, and overhead fans suspended from long stems: In 1916, when the hotel was only two years old, Somerset Maugham noted: "It is cool and empty .... The servants are Hindus, silent and vaguely hostile .... The food is very bad, but the rooms are pleasant, fresh and cool." Time had evidently passed the Grand Pacific by, and so have most of the tourists since the opening of the Suva Travelodge next door. I found "budget rooms" (originally servants' accommodations, I assume) available for litt le more than we were paying at the Metropole. They lacked windows but did have louvred doors, a private shower, fan, and fridge. This last item made it easy to persuade Derek to move.
