Our soldiers were home, and the Spanish Flu was past its peak .

There was new optimism that peace would signal prosperity .

Sadly, this was short lived . Most countries endured the Great Depression before the rise of fascism saw the world again plunged into war .

I spare a special thought for the women of that era . Not only did many enlist and serve, some such as Sister Pearl Mittelheuser from Bundaberg, paid the supreme sacrifice when she died as a Japanese prisoner of war in Sumatra .Women were the mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of men who fought and died at war, then struggled through the Depression .

And then war started again .

Today while remembering the past, we hope and pray for peace tomorrow .

Mayor Jack DempseyBundaberg Regional Council

Hello and welcome to ANZAC Day 2021 .While ANZAC Day is a solemn occasion to reflect and remember those who served, this year offers hope of camaraderie which was sadly missing in 2020 .During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, it was understandable but devastating that traditional ANZAC Day services and commemorations had to be cancelled .We adapted, of course, and realised poignantly that our hardships were nothing like those endured at Gallipoli, the Western Front and Kokoda .Like the red poppies growing on a Flanders field, this year we can renew and restore the ANZAC Day traditions we have come to love and respect .One hundred years ago today the Great War had been finished for just over two years .

Mayor'smessage.

God of Nations at thy feet, in the bonds of love we meet, Hear our voices, we entreat, God defend our free land .

Guard Pacific’s triple star from the shafts of strife and war,Make her praises heard afar, God defend New Zealand .

Men of every creed and race, gather here before thy face,Asking thee to bless this place, God defend our free land .

From dissension, envy, hate, and corruption guard our state, Make our country good and great, God defend New Zealand .

Peace, not war, shall be our boast, but, should foes assail our coast, make us then a mighty host, God defend our free land .

Lord of battles in thy might, put our enemies to flight, Let our cause be just and right, God defend New Zealand .

Let our love for thee increase, may thy blessings never cease, Give us plenty, give us peace, God defend our free land .

From dishonour and from shame, guard our country’s spotless name, crown her with immortal fame, God defend New Zealand .

May our mountains ever be freedom’s ramparts on the sea, Make us faithful unto thee, God defend our free land .

Guide her in the nations’ van, preaching love and truth to man,Working out thy glorious plan, God defend New Zealand .

The battle of Vittorio Veneto marked the end of the First World War on the Italian front .A moving photographic tribute to this battle will be on display at the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, recognising the region’s strong ties to the Italian community and the connection to historic events surrounding pioneer aviator, Bert Hinkler .‘Instants and Places of the First World War’ was created by the Embassy of Italy in Canberra in collaboration with the Museum of the Battle of Vittorio Veneto .The exhibition features 33 photographs as captured by Luigi Marzocchi during the last year of the war, including precisely translated captions taken from his original notes .Herbert ‘Bert' John Louis Hinkier AFC DSM was born in Bundaberg, Queensland on 8 December 1892 .Fate would lead Bert to England some months before the beginning of World War I when he would sign up to the fledgling Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) .

Here Bert trained to be an observer/gunner, participated in 122 flights across France as a gunlayer and saw out the last days of the war as a pilot posted to Number 28 Squadron in Italy .Through this exhibition witness landscapes crossing the Dolomite Mountain just as Bert Hinkler saw with his own eyes in 1918 as an aerial gunner in number 28 RAF squadron in Italy .Explore life at and around the Italian front for civilians, and the harsh conditions faced by soldiers in the mountains and valleys, together with transport and the impressive works of military engineers .The destruction of war will be exposed alongside camaraderie and fraternal spirit of soldiers and the final celebrations of PEACE to mark the end of the war .
