Montjuïc is a true museum in the open air where more of a hundred of sculptures from different ages coexist, by different authors and of different styles and subjects, both made of metal and stone. Furthermore, there are examples of visual poetry (at Joan Brossa Garden) or mosaics (at Mirador de l’Alcalde, by Tharrats). At Montjuïc, the artistic works go in perfect harmony with the beauty of the environment, to which the hill is an open window.

High above the city of

Barcelona, in the vicinity of

Montjuïc Castle, lay the gardens of Mirador del

Alcalde, literally, "The Mayor's

Prospect". (Conceived and inaugurated in

1969 by the then Mayor of

Barcelona Josep Maria de Porcioles)

From the several viewpoints (de la Puntaire, de l’Alcalde, del Poble-sec) you can gaze at the town, the sea and the harbour, and the elevations of Collserola mountain range.

The project itself is a minor

masterpiece of European

Landscape Design. The

development of the proposal was a truly

multidisciplinary process.

The landscape project was led and developed by the Architect

Joaquim Casamor i

Espona and the Horticultural

expert Panella i Bonastre.

The biomorphic fountains at the heart of the scheme were designed by the Engineer Carles Buïgas, pioneer in the use of light and water in landscape design, creator of the Magic Fountain at Montjuïc.

Even more astounding is the quality of the paving scheme, itself a work of art in its own right. Conceived and executed by the artist Joan Josep Tharrats, this paving is a modern take on the classical mosaic executed with recycled materials such as bottles, cogs, cobbles, bricks, and pieces of machinery

The construction of the Mirador heralded the mountain space transition from military outpost into urban setting intended for the citizens of Barcelona. The project was clearly intended as an assertion of civility and urban life upon a mountain that had been mostly used to watch over its unruly inhabitants for centuries. Amazingly, these gardens laid largely abandoned and ignored for years, until they were carefully reinstated to their former splendour in 2009

Teatre Grec was designed and built in 1929 for the World Fair held in Barcelona, inspired by theTheatre of Epidaurus. The architects were Ramon Reventós and Nicolau Maria Rubióand Tudurí. It's located in an old quarry on the mountain, carved wall which serves asthe stage of the theater

The area is 460m2 and has a capacity of 1,900 spectators.

. Art performances are held sporadically, especially in summer. The rest of the year, isin a state that quite qualifies as semi abandonment

The stone from Montjuïc was used to build most of the emblematic buildings at the town (the Roman city, the cathedral, Santa Maria del Mar, the Sagrada Família, the Palau de la Virreina, etc.) and it was exported to other countries. The amount of exploited stone from this place has been huge: it would be possible to build 20,000 times La Pedrera with it. So it is possible to declare, in the words of Estanislau Roca, that Montjuïc has been “the cradle and the essence of Barcelona”.

Housed in a building situated on Montjuic hill, and built—as a few notable buildings in that area were—for the 1929 International Fair, the Mercat de les Flors theater aspires to the same level of spectacle in its intensive program of avant-garde dance and drama.

The Centre of Agriculture: designed by Josep Maria Ribas i Casas and Manuel Maria Mayol, it is located between Paseo de Santa Madrona and calle Lérida. With an area of 16,000 m2, it is arranged around a central patio, with five rectangular naves and two arcaded galleries. Influenced by the Italian Renaissance—particularly by Lombardy—the facades of the various facades are covered by stucco and ceramincs, with several octagonal towers and triple arches.

The building was designated for its current usage in 1983, and has since become a hub of Barcelona’s cultural scene.

The Teatre Lliure is a theatre in Barcelona considered one of the most prestigious in Catalonia. It was created in 1976 In 2001, the theater opened at its new location in the old Palace of Agriculture on the mountain of Montjuïc of Barcelona. The new building contains several halls equipped with the latest technology which permits changing the order of the rooms in mere minutes, changing the positions of props, expanding the available room, and facilitating the manipulation of the scene and staging elements.

The Agriculture Palace is now known as the «Mercat de les Flors» (Market of the Flowers) and is occupied by the Theatre City, which includes the Theatre Institute, the Teatre Lliure Foundation, the Mercat de les Flors Municipal Theatre and the Fabià Puigserver Theatre.

The Mercat de les Flors is one of several theatres, art galleries and concert halls that live among the woods and gardens of Montjuic, the green hill that guards Barcelona's port. Created for the 1929 International Fair, and fully refurbished in 1983, the Mercat is a handsome Art Deco building, painted in cream and deep red, and is dedicated to the arts of dance and movement. Inside there is a 12-metre cupola designed by the Mallorcan Miquel Barceló, and three separate stages. As well as hosting productions from all over the world, the theatre is committed to encouraging more people to participate in dance, and offers workshops and talks on dance and drama.
