The hill of Montjuic rises almost 213 meter above the commercial port on the south side of the city. There are many ways to get to the summit, including gondolas and funiculaires. Montjuic is a wonderful spot to spend a day strolling around the many gardens, museums and galleries with majestic views of the city; the area is home to various 1992 Olympic game venues such as Calatrava’s Olumpic needle on the landward side, the enormous cemetery and lighthouse can be found on the other side…

The Montjuïc Telefónica Communications Tower, popularly known as Torre Calatrava is a telecommunication tower designed by Santiago Calatrava. Construction on the tower began in 1989 and was completed in 1992.

The white tower was built for Telefónica to transmit television coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics Games in Barcelona. The 136 m (446 ft) tower located in the Olympic park represents an athlete holding the Olympic Flame. The base is covered with trencadís, Gaudí's mosaic technique created from broken tile shards. Because of the tower's orientation, it works also as a giant sundial, which uses the Europa square to indicate the hour.

Joaquim Blume Spanish gymnastics champion at 15 competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics of Helsinki with only 19 years. He went to win eight medals in the 1955 Mediterranean Games and in 1957 he won the European Championship, defeating favourite Yuri Titov. He was also a favourite in the 1960 Summer Olympics, but he died in a plane crash at the Valdemeca mountains, in Cuenca, on April 29, 1959.

Tors de l'Estiu (Torso of Summer ) by Aristides Maillol Maillol (1861-1944) spoke Catalan, wore traditional espadrilles, a sash and a barretina (the traditional Catalan cap), he danced sardanes and he openly proclaimed his Catalan identity: “I consider Catalonia my true homeland”.

The Palauet Albéniz, Joan Maragall GardensThe name of the palace was given in the 1930s in honour of the great Catalan musician Isaac Albéniz

The Palauet Albéniz was built as a resting place for Spain's royal family, within the grounds of the Barcelona International Exhibition of 1929. It was constructed in 1928 by the architects Joan Moya and César Martinell for the International Exhibition which was to be held the following year.

The Joan Maragall gardens also have 32 sculptures, all from different periods and each one sculpted by a different artist, some of them of very high quality.

gardens. It was built for

the 1929 Universal

Exhibition to house the Spanish

Royal Family during the

event.

The Royal Pavilion built for The 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, now known as Albéniz Palace, housed the representatives of the Spanish Royal House. Located close to the Stadium, surrounded by spacious gardens, it was designed by Juan Moya in a baroque style inspired by the 18th-century French courts. The interior decoration is in the Empire style, most notably the tapestries designed by Francisco Goya and a room of mirrors copied from Versailles. Extended in 1970 and decorated by Salvador Dalí paintings, it is currently used in certain ceremonies and public acts.

The two sculpted lions which can be seen at the entrance to the small palace come from the Palace of Pedralbes.
