'La Casa de la Ciutat‘ is the building that houses the offices of the City of Barcelona. It has more than 6 centuries of history and architectural presence ranging from the Gothic to Neoclassical. Government offices and meeting rooms coexist with historic artwork in the form of sculptures, tapestries and paintings.

Its name refers to the narratives or chronicles of Ramon Muntaner and Bernat Desclot, which Sert used for documtening Roger de Flor's expedition to the Orient in the 14th century, the subject of the room's decoration. The walls feature representations of various episodes from the campaign, such as Roger de Flor's offer of help to the Emperor Andronicus, the conquest of Artaki, the Greeks' payment with false money, the "rouse iron" battle cry, the defence of Gallipoli, the above-mentioned chronicles, King Peter III of Aragon, the storming of the Athenian Acropolis, the slaying of Roger de Flor and the Catalans' revenge and triumphant voyage by sea to the Bosphorus, while the ceiling shows the defence of the tower of Adrianopolis. The paintings were done in oil, on a canvas coated beforehand with gold leaf mixed with silver.

The murals were painted in 1928 by Josep María Sert, the Catalan artist who went on to decorate the Rockefeller Center in New York.

Josep Maria Sert i Badia (1874 –1945) was particularly known for his grisaille style, often in gold and black.

From 1373 to 1714, the 100 people that advised the city councillors gathered in the Saló de Cent, which is attributed to Pere Llobet.

Historically speaking, the city’s first form of government was the Consell de Cent, or Council of the One Hundred, which used to meet in the Great Hall, the Saló de Cent, from 1373 until it was dissolved in 1714. This magnificent Gothic-style chamber is included on the Barcelona City Hall tour

The Consell de Cent, meaning in English "Council of One Hundred" was a governmental institution of Barcelona. It was established in the 13th century and lasted until the 18th century. Its name derives from the number of its members: one hundred (Catalan: cent).

In 1249, James I created the fundamental structure of the municipal government of Barcelona: a board of advice of 4 members, helped by 8 counselors and an assembly of probi homines (leaders), all them members of the mà major (Catalan for senior hand, or the upper class formed by wealthy merchants). After several modifications, by the year 1265, the municipal organization gained its more permanent structure: the municipal authority rested on 3 counselors elected by a Council of one hundred individuals.

Over the years, the number of people increased until it reached one hundred. The City Hall offers guided visits of the hall, and it is also opened for certain events such as marriages and conferences.

The Consell de Cent was abolished by Philip V of Spain with the Decretos de Nueva Planta upon his occupation of Barcelona after the Siege of Barcelona in 1714.A main street in the city of Barcelona, the Carrer(street) Consell de Cent, is named after this institution (before 1978 it was known as Calle Consejo de Ciento, in Spanish).
