Here are some interesting stats from the trip. The big fish outing winner was Dave Schober with a 50"er! The most fish for the week team winners were Dan Koniewicz & Frank Bottiglieri with 15 fish for the week! The big fish winner for Sunday was Phil Gutmann with a 46". The big fish winner for Mon- day ended in a tie with Steve Hill and Frank Bottiglieri both catching 45.50" fish! The big fish winner for Tuesday was Phil Gutmann with 45"er. Big Fish winner for Wednesday was Phil Gutmann again with a 44.50" musky. The big fish winner on Thurs- day was Dave Schober with a 50"er and the big fish winner for Friday was Steve Kroll with a 43"er. Largest Pike honors went to Dan Koniewicz with a 39" Pike & the winner for catching the smallest muskie went to Tim Crews who caught a 20" muskie! Congrats to all who fished this outing. Hopefully next year we’ll get some new members out with us to experience the “Woods” and all she has to offer! Our “summer break” is now officially over and our normal monthly meeting schedule will resume. Aaron Sands is our featured guest speaker for the August 10 th meeting! Many of you may know Aaron’s father Denny Sands, who is the founding president of the Shabbona Lake Sportsman Club that helped enhance this fishery in DeKalb County. Aaron grew up fishing with his Dad on Shabbona Lake and most often you can find him working during his “off-time” at Lakeside Bait, Tackle and Boat Rental. Aaron is a great musky fisherman who really knows Shabbona! Aaron will be covering the “how & where” to fish for muskies on Shabbona Lake! The Wednesday August 10 th meeting will be- gin at 7:00 PM at the Schaumburg Golf Club in Schaumburg, so come early and join us for the “all you can eat” buffet. Dinner starts at 6:00 PM and the cost is $13.00/person! Don’t miss this meeting as it promises to be packed with great information! North to Ontario!

2011 Youth Musky Scholarship Recipients Eagerly Await August Trip to the Indian Lake

Chain in Vermillion Bay Ontario, Canada!

The Fox River Valley Chapter of Muskies, Inc. has selected our Musky Scholarship Recipients, ten very lucky young anglers, who are eagerly preparing to embark on a this very special trip later this month, from August 17th-20th. This select group of young musky hunters, are all winners of an FRV Fishing Essay Contest. Winners will each be accompanied by an adult guardian, for this fabulous chaperoned trip to NW Ontario. They will be fishing the musky-filled waters of the Indian Chain of Lakes north of Vermillion Bay, Ontario. Youth participants will have all of their expenses paid by the Fox River Valley Chapter!! The 2011 youth musky outing continues the chapter’s storied tradition of organizing exciting trips to remote desti-nations, providing young musky fisherman with opportunities to build their own fishing and outdoor heritage. Ac-cording to Rich Gallagher, the Fox River Valley Chapter President, “Our board works tirelessly to promote the three main tenets of Muskies, Inc. -Youth, Fisheries and Conservation”. Gallagher added- “In addition to our work to add more Muskies to local waterways, and to protect those waterways for future generations, our youth pro-grams provide a vital platform to ensure the future of musky fishing by introducing the next generation to the magic of our sport and educating the public on the role and importance of the King of Freshwater Fish. The kids are sure to have encounters with lots of fish and have a terrific time.”

IMA MEETING HIGHLIGHTS The new Shabbona Fish Barrier opened after about 9 inches of rain fell recently. The hinged doors open from excessive water pressure, and need to be manually closed after a flash flood. As a reminder, FRV contributed $4,700 in 2010 to this $15,000 Barrier Project. The downstream musky rescues have already put more than 150 muskies back in the lake, over the last year or so. Overall, the project has been a major success. An Evergreen Lake Musky Rescue was also held and they found two 50 inchers.. Unfortunately , the biggest fish died during the transport back to the lake. It was very hot and the fish were taxed.

Earlier this year, the FRV Board approved the purchase of a pro-jector for our local DNR regional office and biologist. The projec-tor was funded by FRV, in July of 2011. Additionally, DNR wants to purchase Zebco 33 type rod and reel combos for use in the collar counties around Chicago. So, FRV volunteered, & has contacted rod and reel vendors and manufacturers to obtain best prices for the combos. Our Chapter will be donating 100 rod and reel combos to the DNR...

Follow the Hot Bites for More Muskie Action - by Todd Minor At the end of the 2001 season, I told myself that something needed to change. I was tired of putting in all this time on the water and not catching many fish. I was tired of catching less than (10) fish a year, and spending many days on the water, be-fore I would actually catch a fish. Then, the fish was not even that big. I knew I was not the best fisherman in the world, am still nowhere near, but I felt I was doing better than my results were showing me. It was then I decided to start looking for new places to fish. Not just anywhere, but places where I felt my opportunities were greater at catching fish. Like former member, (now a Minnesota M.I. member), Joe Mellott once told me "It's not the fisherman, it's the fishing." Amazingly, I did not have to travel really far to accomplish my goal. In 2001, I caught (6) Muskies and about (15) in the boat. In 2002 I caught (28) Muskies and we put (57) in the boat! What a dif-ference a year makes, right? Well all I did was apply my craft to the hot bite. Finding these hot bites is not that hard; you just have to be willing to put in your time. One of the things I had at my disposal was a huge lake library. I started collecting map books and lake maps way back in 1981 when Fishing Hot Spots first came out. I was a teenage map geek savant. I could then, and proba-bly still could tell you information on about any lake in Wisconsin. There are other book makers out now, and I have them all. Maps are a great way to find and eliminate water. I have found so many "sleeper lakes" (a great book keyword) full of fish that get little pressure - and guess what, they are in a book. Use the internet. Just about every friendship I have made in musky fishing, I can trace back to a musky site like Muskie First. I am a member of this club because of this. I started fishing Indiana because of this. The internet is a great tool, because there are some people who just can't help but brag. Not only can you find hot bites, but the times of year these places are hot. Read between the lines as well and look for clue words. Just because they don't tell you, does not mean you can't figure it out. The lake library really helps with that.

Musky show swap meets. Nothing loosens the old jawbone like some alcohol. This is a great place to have your ears in perfect working order. You can talk to guides and people using the inter-net, who have been catching fish. This is a situation where you don't ask pointed specific questions that might get you a cold shoulder, you just let it flow. Even if you don't have anything to give back, just be honest and sincere, it is amazing how it works. It might cost you a couple beers, too. I have found some great new places to fish doing just that! (Continued ——>)

TV shows - Do you think these guys are fishing the "hot bite"? You bet!!!! They have to can a show, and in short order. Go where the fish are biting! Some places are pretty easy to figure out like Lake Saint Claire. Others not so much. Look for clues in the background, the strain of fish, the shoreline, water color, trees, even how they are fishing can tell you where they are if you give it some thought. Anybody know where Bucher films his musky segments when he is not on LOTW? I figured it out watching his show. Be a pioneer. Just because nobody is fishing it, does not mean it's not good. Talk to the local tackle shop. Look at state stocking re-ports. Here is where the lake library can come in to play. I have caught many fish from bodies of water before the guides and the public ever warmed up to it. I hope some of these tips can put you on the hot bite for more fish action!
