what is take heart?Take Heart is a charity set up 25 years ago by a small group who wished to give some-thing back to the Yorkshire Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary after successful treatment. Since its inception, the charity has raised over three million pounds and has made an enormous difference for patients and staff alike. The charity is most unusual in that there are no salaries paid to any staff – all trustees give their time voluntarily and only a tiny percentage of donations is used for administration.

The differences made are immediately apparent when you enter the Heart Centre. New modern furniture, decor and fittings, modern equipment, bedside television, radio, internet and even all bedside landline telephone calls are provided free by Take Heart. Superb accommodation is provided in the hospital free of charge by Take Heart

for patient’s relatives who have distance to travel. Additional medical equipment is also provided to enhance the treatment of patients as is the provision of booklets for patients explaining procedures practised in the hospital. Staff areas including reception desks, staff rooms and cloak-rooms have been refurbished. Take Heart also provide a roof garden adjacent to the heart wards to give patients, relatives and staff a breath of fresh air. All this and so much more is provided with the generous donations received. So much so that staff have been overheard referring to Take Heart as their own Father Christmas.

We never fail to be touched by the wonderful people who donate small and larger amounts. Thank you so much.

Bill Stevenson, Editor

another way we help We don’t often mention this, but a considerable

amount of Take Heart money is spent on providing dozens of different booklets to give to patients at the Yorkshire Heart Centre. These booklets have been written by the staff of the Centre and all explain in clear language, the vari-ous procedures which patients undergo. The medical staff believe that ‘everything that will happen to you’ should be clearly explained and this is our contribution to this ethos. It is often difficult to take in everything which is said at consultations and being able to take a booklet home and read at leisure can be helpful.

See front cover for a small sample of these booklets.

This marvellous achievement of your charity has made such a difference to helping many thousands of patients over the years and continues to give support to our patients and wonderful staff of the Yorkshire Heart Centre.

We intend to make this a walk to remember! We are having a very special Medal struck to present to all walkers (human or otherwise,) to mark this anniversary.

So please do try to come along and walk for us. If you can raise a little sponsor money for us it would be very much appreciated. Why not make it a family day out to enjoy this lovely park. You will meet many people of the same mind - making a little effort to help us in our work to continue our support of one of the finest Heart Centres in the UK and indeed in Europe.

To all those who have passed through the doors of the Centre, family, friends and the many thousands who have supported us over the years, please come and do your

bit in either walking or supporting this celebratory walk.

Our AGM was disappointing in attendance but those who came along enjoyed meeting the Chief Executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, Mr Julian Hartley and staff of the Yorkshire Heart Centre who gave interesting talks and thanked Take Heart for all its work over the years.

A full report will be enclosed with a newsletter before the end of the year

So to close my comments - please try to be with us on Sunday 7th September 2014.

chairman’s comments

Enclosed with your newsletter is this year’s Sponsored Walk form and details. You will see that it is described as our 25th Anniversary Walk, which of course is a celebration of our 25 years of fundraising.

Page 4: a small charity with a big heart · rooms have been refurbished. Take Heart also provide a roof garden adjacent to the heart wards to give patients, relatives and staff a breath of

Last year the walk raised £7573.50 compared to the total for 2012 of £6313.70. As you can see the difference was £1259.80, a step in the right direction. They are both lovely amounts to put into the kitty and we are grateful for all the effort that you put in, not only for doing the walk but in obtaining sponsors - and that leads me right into the reason for mentioning this. Gift Aid can increase any sponsorship by 25% - it’s not often that you get anything back from the Inland Revenue, so lets get as much back as we can.

They, (the Inland Revenue – bless them), are doing their best to give us some money by making it easier. All we need now is the person’s full name, their house number and a full postcode. Of course the person will need to have paid sufficient tax to cover the amount we will receive. Easy-peasy isn’t it?

I know you must get fed up with me writing this every year as you get your sponsorship forms but I honestly do feel that I wouldn’t be doing my job right if I didn’t do this reminder.

Thank you and I hope I see most of you at the Sponsored Walk on September 7th - which will be here before you know it.

25 Years of fundraising at the Yorkshire Heart Centre

After my husband and I spent a morning at the zoo with Joey, our four year old grandson, we stopped at a restaurant for lunch. My husband reached for his new bifocals to read the menu and found they were missing.

“I know where they are Grandpa,” said our grandson.“Where?” asked my husband, his face brightening.“They’re at the zoo,” Joey replied. “When you took me off the train by the elephants, they fell out of your pocket.”Trying to control his anger, my husband asked, “Joey, if you saw my glasses fall out, why didn’t you tell me?”“Well, Grandpa,” explained Joey, “after you stepped on them, I didn’t think you wanted them any more.”

take heart day trip

Bridlington22nd June 2014

Excitement was in the air as passengers of three coaches started their journey from various pick up points to our chosen destina-tion - Bridlington.

The journey began on a beautiful morning and we were blessed that the good weather continued throughout the day. To help pass the journey a quiz was arranged and the lucky winner received a nice prize. We didn’t forget the children as they also had their own quiz.

Our arrival, the harbour was like Briggate on a Saturday afternoon with passengers from all the coaches meeting up, with many old friends seeing each other for the first time since last year.

Waiting to get on the coaches to come home, everyone I spoke to said what a lovely day it had been. A few did some serious walking to

Sewerby Park and along the coast, others enjoyed the fresh air and local interests. Needless to say, the children enjoyed the beach and amusements.

This super day out was organised by Mrs Edith Mclean and we pass on our grateful thanks. Paul Kaufman prepared the quizzes and our final thanks go to our drivers for the day, Jim, Helen and Paul.

On the return journey a vote was taken to decide next year’s destination and the winner was Southport. I look forward to seeing many of you next year.

colne valley lionsI was pleased to meet up with a number of representatives of Colne Valley Lions when they came along to present me with a cheque for the sum of £700.00 This donation was raised for Take Heart after the Lions had held a Race Night and after receiving the cheque, it was my pleasure to show them around to see the many projects completed by Take Heart.

A member of the party Mr John Turner told me that he was a patient at The Yorkshire Heart Centre and had benefitted so much from using our facilities. He also remarked on the wonderful care he had received from all the staff. The Colne Valley Lions had held this event as a thank you on his behalf.

I was so pleased to meet up with Mr John and Mrs Nicola Turner at The Yorkshire Heart Centre when they came to present me with a cheque for the sum of £472.50.This lovely amount was donated from family relatives and friends to celebrate John and Nicola renewing their Wedding Vows.

You may notice that John was present at the Colne Valley Lions presentation when Nicola took that photograph.

Having received the cheque I thanked them and wished them every happiness and continued good health.

people are wonderful

In the last newsletter, I said that we never fail to be amazed – and gratified – at the number of people who take part in events to raise money for our charity. Lovely people have walked across Europe for us, climbed mountains, rowed canoes from Liverpool to Leeds, arranged theatre concerts, jumped out of planes, done marathons across the globe and even grown beards to make donations for Take Heart.

I highlighted some of them and now show the money they have collected for Take Heart (up to the time of writing).

Marie Turton – The Leeds Half Marathon £1148.75Peter and Marion Bishop – The Edinburgh Marathon £56.25Anthony Sadler – The London Marathon £772.88Tony Stanley and John – Cycling from Rotterdam to Bratislava! £682.50Aren’t they fantastic? Thank you all so much.

Bill Stevenson, EditorP.S. At the time of writing, the Tour de France is practically upon us with all the excitement it generates. I wonder if afterwards, someone could organise a “Tour de le-Eds” with sponsorship for Take Heart – just a thought …

walking club notes18th May

It was a lovely morning for a walk – but today we were on a bus. It was that time of the year for our annual coach trip and this year we were Llandudno bound. We certainly picked a nice day for the trip, the outward journey passing very quickly as a large amount of the route was motorway or dual carriageway. We had a bit of leisure time to find somewhere to have a bite to eat and then most of our party met to have a trip on the tramway system to the top of the Great Orme. There had been no breeze sown at sea level but up top it was quite a strong wind which stopped a numberr of the group getting to get to the very top and the trig point.

A nice meal at The Queens hotel on the promenade provided a fitting end to our day out. Our thanks to Olive and Michael for arranging the day.
